FLASHBACK

Donghae was sitting on the chair beside the hospital bed Yoora was laying on, staring at his wife worriedly, one of her hands was in his hold. Suddenly the door opened to reveal Dr. Kim, the doctor assigned for Yoora, entering the room.

“I’ve got the results with me,” Dr. Kim spoke as he approached both of them with a smile.

“What result, doctor?” Donghae asked as he got up from his seat, looking at the doctor curiously.

“We’ve run a few tests on your wife and what we could say is…” Dr. Kim trailed off.

Donghae gulped waiting for the doctor’s next words.

“…the result shows that your wife is pregnant,” the doctor announced with a smile.

“W-W-What?” he terribly stuttered at what he’d just heard. He couldn’t be mishearing things, right?

“Congratulations, Donghae sshi. You’re going to be a father soon,” the doctor congratulated, still with his sincere smile.

Donghae stared at the doctor in shock, too speechless to say anything. He wasn't ready to hear this kind of news. Wasn’t it too soon? Though, a small smile slowly crept up on his lips.

The doctor chuckled lightly looking at Donghae’s reaction. “According to the result, your wife’s nearly 4 months pregnant now. She fainted due to morning sickness. Nothing much to worry since it’s not alarming,” the doctor informed, still with a smile.

Upon hearing that, Donghae’s smile slowly faded away. “F-Four months?” he creased his eyebrows in confusion.

The doctor nodded in reply.

Donghae laughed a little. “I think you’ve mistaken, doctor. There’s no way it’s been four months. We just barely got married a week ago,” he said in amusement.

The doctor blinked, staring at him before he chuckled. “Well, pregnancy before marriage is normal for people nowadays. So you don’t need to worry,” the doctor said, patting Donghae’s shoulder before he made his way out of the room.

Donghae stood there stunned, still comprehending what he had just heard from the doctor a while ago.

“According to the result, your wife’s nearly 4 months pregnant now.” The doctor’s words echoed in his ears.

‘It hasn’t even reached two months since Yoora came back to Seoul, though…’ he thought.

“Well, pregnancy before marriage is normal for people nowadays”

Donghae was deep in his own thoughts, thinking of those words over and over. Then something clicked in his mind. His eyes widened.

‘No. It’s impossible,’ he shook his head, denying the thought that came to his mind. He looked down at Yoora who was still unconscious on the bed and that was when her words replayed in his mind.

“I’m scared.”

“I’m scared you’ll hate me, everyone will hate me.”

“I wanted to tell you. I really wanted to tell you. But...I...I can't. I-I think it would be better if you find it out yourself. I’m sure one day you would know even without me telling you about it. It will show up soon. Very soon. And you’ll know it very soon.”

“No. I would never leave you, oppa. Don’t worry.”

“But…just please. For now, don’t stop hugging me, kissing me. Please don’t stop.”

Donghae found himself stiffening in his position. ‘Is that what she meant? What she found hard to tell me all this time was about her… pregnancy?’ he thought in disbelief, feeling his legs weakening.

“Oh my God…” he uttered in whisper, plopping on the chair as he felt his legs were too numb to stand any longer. He looked at her as tears escaped his eyes. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier, Yoora ah?” he barely whispered. Soon after that, Yoora’s words echoed again as if answering his question.

“I’m scared you’ll hate me, everyone will hate me.”

Donghae pulled over the car to the roadside and immediately landed his head on the steering wheel, crying his heart out.

He felt fooled.

He felt betrayed.

By someone he really loved.

He felt mad not because he wasn’t the first person she had with, not because she wasn’t a when they first did it during their first night as husband and wife. No. He felt mad because the reason she had agreed to get married with him in the first place was only because she wanted to hide her pregnancy from her parents, to conceal her mistake, to prevent her family from getting shame because of her.

Of course she never told him about that but he somehow knew it. Even before they got married, when he first knew that she had agreed to their parents’ plan of marrying them off, he was absolutely shocked. Because he knew that she didn’t love him. And he started to agree to their parents’ plan only because she’d told him that she believed with love after marriage, and of course another reason was because he loved her.

He couldn’t help but feel mad that she had lied to him; about her belief in love after marriage. If she didn’t tell him about her so-called belief, there was no way he would agree to this marriage. Even though he loved her so much, there was no way he would marry her when he knew that she would never love him. She could’ve just been honest and tell him the truth but she had chosen not to. And in the end, her own choice only gave painful scars to both of them.

Memories they had shared together ever since they got married replayed in his mind, especially the time when she had confessed her love for him. Now that he thought about it, he felt like she was pretending all this time. Pretending to love him. Pretending to be happy around him. When in fact, she only looked at him as a friend this whole time. He couldn’t help but feel fooled.

“Congratulations, Donghae sshi. You’re going to be a father soon.”

Those words suddenly rang in his mind, making his tears stream harder than before. He remembered how he had felt his lips slowly curling up upon hearing those words despite the shock he had gotten from it. He had felt so happy for a few seconds until the doctor mentioned the four-months thingy. He felt so stupid for thinking that the doctor had just made a mistake on the checkup. And he couldn’t help but feel stupid too when he had easily believed that she was pregnant with his baby when it was barely a week since they got married.

He was so stupid and very easy to be fooled, he thought. He was hiccupping for crying too much. Though, it didn’t stop him from sobbing harder and harder.

“Hey, are you okay?” Eunhyuk asked when he saw Donghae’s face wet with tears right after he opened the door. He invited his friend to get inside his condominium and Donghae merely remained silent until he took a seat on the sofa.

“Hey, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” Eunhyuk asked when Donghae didn’t do anything but staring down on the floor.

Eunhyuk moved to sit beside Donghae and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. “Donghae ah, spill it out,” he said. “Do you and Yoora fight?” he asked.

Upon hearing the name was mentioned, tears that had stopped flowing now came back rolling down his cheeks easily. Eunhyuk was flustered upon witnessing it so he rubbed Donghae’s back comfortingly as Donghae continued to cry.

“What happened, huh?” Eunhyuk asked softly.

Donghae sniffled, wiping his tears away. “Can I ask you something?” he asked, his voice cracking a bit.

“Sure. What is it?”

“What would you feel…if you find out your girlfriend…are pregnant with someone’s child and you only know about it after you got married?”

Eunhyuk was silent and contemplated for the answer when suddenly his eyes widened, realizing something. “Y-Yah…y-y-your wife…pregnant?”

Donghae took a deep breath and nodded his head.

Eunhyuk gaped looking at him, speechless to say anything. “H-How did you know?” he asked after a while in silence.

With that, Donghae told him what had happened that morning and how he found out about Yoora’s pregnancy meanwhile Eunhyuk listened to him attentively and sometimes his jaw dropped to the floor as a reaction to Donghae’s story.

“So what are you going to do now?” Eunhyuk asked.

Donghae lightly shook his head. “I…I don’t know. It just…I don’t think I can face her any sooner,” he mumbled.

Silence took over the atmosphere for a while before Donghae voiced out.

“Eunhyuk ah…”

Eunhyuk raised his eyebrows in response.

“Can I....stay here for a while?” Donghae asked hesitantly.

“But…what about your wife?”

Donghae was silent in response.

“I can let you live here for a while but your wife is currently pregnant, Donghae. She needs you, your attention, your love,” Eunhyuk advised.

“She doesn’t need me. She never loves me after all. She married me just to cover her mistake. That’s all,” Donghae retorted.

Eunhyuk sighed. “Even if it’s true, she’s pregnant, Donghae. You can’t leave her alone in the house. What if something bad happened to her? What if she falls and there’s no one to help her?”

Donghae didn’t respond.

“I know you still love her, Donghae. You’re just mad at her. That’s it. You want to hate her but you can’t. Ain’t I right?”

Donghae heaved a deep sigh. “Please, Eunhyuk. I need some time. Please. Just a few days, I promise.”

“What about Yoora, then?” Eunhyuk was hesitant. He was worried if something bad would happen. He didn’t want to be blamed for.

“I’ll handle it, I promise.”
