chapter I: Bloom
the aster and the sunflower.Floraison.
The aromas of different flowers filled the flower shop, there were dozens of bouquet of flowers, most were roses since a lot of people seemed to like the cliché gift of roses for their loved ones, there were some lilacs and daisies, there were sunflowers and lavenders and a variety of roses. The walls were painted white and light yellow with little paintings of lilies dancing around, the interior and exterior were pretty much similar to those old buildings you find in Verona, it was classy, sophisticated, and lively and the atmosphere was indeed light and happy. Old classical music played in the background coming from a vinyl record player that Lisa’s father gave her for her birthday last year. The windows outside had carnations hanging by the windows’ ledges and from the outside you could clearly see a sign glowing in hot pink; IN BLOOM, and right above had a wooden sign with “Floraison” beautifully carved onto it.
“Floraison” was what Lisa had decided to call the flower shop she had spent years building, it meant ‘bloom’ in French. Bloom, a noun; a flower, captivating beauty. Very much similar to the attributes her mother possessed.
Lisa knew her mother would’ve loved to see this, she would’ve been so proud of Lisa for putting up a flower shop dedicated for her, it was just so unfortunate her mother did not live to see the day, but Lisa knew her mother would be proud and happy for her nonetheless.
“Reminiscing again, Manoban?” a voice said
Lisa chuckled and continued taking pictures of the newly decorated lilacs she had just made a while ago; it was for a costumer who wished to pick it up today.
“Skipping work again, Jisoo Unnie?” Lisa said as she took more shots of the flowers
“Yah, I do not skip work” Jisoo defended “And I bought chicken, you ungrateful twerp” she added as she held the paper bag up
“Of course you don’t skip work, you are the hardest working human being I’ve ever met, and you are an absolute angel, Kim Jisoo” Lisa said as she ran to envelope Jisoo in a tight hug as she grabbed the paper bag
“The things you do for food” Jisoo mumbled
“Thanks for this, Unnie” Lisa said as she sat down on the small fancy table nearby
“Lots of customers today, Lis?” Jisoo asked
“Like always, I’m surprised I have time for lunch today” Lisa said, but she has learned to be patient with it all
“You should put a clock in here Lisa because it’s 4 in the afternoon already” Jisoo pointed out making Lisa stare in disbelief
“Damn” Lisa whispered as she devoured the food Jisoo bought her
“You know you should really consider on hiring people, Lis, you can’t do this all alone you know, you’ll end up being 24 but having a 97 year old lady’s back” Jisoo said as she patted Lisa’s back
Lisa chuckled, Jisoo was right, business had been booming ever since she had opened the shop up two years ago, she had survived the first year because Jisoo had been helping her a lot but the older one had finally landed a job that she actually liked, leaving Lisa running the shop all alone and these past few days she hasn’t had a less tiring day.
“I need someone whom I can trust though” Lisa said
The bell rang signaling a customer had just come in, Lisa quickly stood and smiled at the customer, he had balding hair and he seemed to be panting heavily.
“Good Afternoon, Sir” Lisa said
“I came for the lilacs” He said
Lisa nodded as she grabbed the lilacs and placed them on the counter.
“That would be 25 dollars, sir” Lisa said
The man nodded and paid Lisa as he quickly grabbed the flowers and rushed out.
“He obviously forgot their anniversary” Jisoo said
Lisa laughed as she nodded. Suddenly more people came in the shop, Jisoo then cleared up what Lisa had eaten and went to the back room and returned to help Lisa entertain the customers. At around 5:30 the customers started dying down; Jisoo sat down on the couch behind the counter and sighed in relief.
“You are a ing genius for choosing the middle of New York for your business but goddamn this is tiring” Jisoo said
Lisa sighed and nodded in agreement, she looked around and saw that most of the flowers she created were now vanished from her shop, there were only a few lavenders and roses left, and she had to make a whole new bunch of flowers tonight for tomorrow.
“You still could’ve chosen the one near the cemetery” Jisoo pointed out
“No, Unnie” Lisa said, laughing at her
