chapter V: Benny's
the aster and the sunflower.Benny’s.
Benny’s has always been Lisa and Jisoo’s go-to-place back in their college days in NYU, whether it was 7 in the evening or 3 in the morning, if one of them wanted a milkshake and fries they would always straight away drive to Benny’s and they’ve even befriended Benny himself and as well as his wife, sadly Benny passed away due to cancer two years ago but Lisa and Jisoo still came back to the place, it was as close to home and everyone who worked there loved them as much as they loved Benny. They’ve had tons of great memories in Benny’s; Jisoo had first brought Lisa to Benny’s when Lisa was having some jitters on performing her first dance stage for their talent show, they had ordered nachos and milkshakes and listened to music that boomed from the jukebox, the place felt cozy and felt like home and it made Lisa feel happy and safe and ever since that night Lisa had kept coming back, it has become her safe haven. And tonight Lisa decided to share it with her date.
Benny’s was not the vintage vibe that Lisa was used to, it was more of a retro styled diner, it made you feel like you were back in the 50’s as Elvis Presley songs would play from the jukebox. Its seats were aqua and white in color, its windows had yellow neon lights but it didn’t hurt your eyes when you look at it, its walls were white with some little designs all over, the floor was checkered black and white and the waiters and waitresses were very nice and kind.
“A diner? Bringing it back old school, huh?” Jennie said as she smiled at Lisa
Jennie…she’s got a beautiful name. Lisa thought as she grinned
“You’re smiling like an idiot, Lisa” Jennie pointed out
“I can’t help it, I’m just so happy…Jennie” Lisa said and she can’t help but feel giddy as she finally calls the girl by her name
Jennie giggled as she pushed Lisa by her shoulders as they made their way inside the diner, and once again Lisa was presented with the same expression Jennie had at Uppgifter a while ago. Lisa grabbed her camera and snapped pictures of the girl right away, Jennie seemed to fit right in the place, her sundress blended in the 50’s vibes of the place.
“How do you discover these places?” Jennie asked excitedly
“Jisoo Unnie first brought me here when college was being a to me” Lisa said which made them both chuckle.
The two then sat down near the window and just near the jukebox, Jennie seemed to really enjoy the music. The waitress then handed them their menu, Lisa stuck with her usual order which was grilled cheese sandwich with fries and ice cold coke, Jennie on the other hand ordered Benny’s famous pizza fries and a milkshake.
“So you’re not from here are you?” Jennie asked as they waited for their order
“Made from Thailand” Lisa said as she grinned
“So why’d you move to New York? Why not just stay home with your family? I mean, New York is loud and crazy busy, I bet Thailand’s peaceful” Jennie said
“I never said I grew up in Thailand” Lisa said
“Oh? Why?” Jennie said
“I am Thai but I grew up in Korea which is how I met Jisoo Unnie, and then she went to college in NYU and I wanted to go too, she was clearly my role model back then” Lisa said
“And what did you major in?” Jennie asked
“Business” Lisa said
Jennie nodded and on cue their food arrived, the two then started devouring it straight away and Lisa couldn’t help but giggle at how adorable Jennie looked.
“This is so good” Jennie moaned as she drank her milkshake
“Hey” Lisa called out
“Hmm?” Jennie said as she happily ate her pizza fries
“You told me before that you’ve been living in New York for 15 years now? Where are you from originally?” Lisa asked
“You’ve got a good memory, I’m impressed you still remember I told you that” Jennie said “But to answer your question, I’m originally from Korea obviously, but my foster parents adopted me and brought me to New Zealand, I lived there for 6 years then we moved to New York”
“How about your biological parents?” Lisa asked
“I-I don’t know” Jennie said, Lisa sensed Jennie’s sudden mood change so she decided to change the topic
“You got any siblings?” Lisa asked
“The Kim’s only have two kids” Jennie said
“And where do you fit in that order?” Lisa asked
“I’m the eldest which basically means only my younger sister, Ella, is the real heir to the Kim’s” Jennie said
“How old is your sister?” Lisa asked
“10” Jennie said
“You must really love your sister” Lisa said
“Of course I do” Jennie said
“Yeah, I see it in the way yo
