chapter XVIII: irony
the aster and the sunflower.Ironic.
How ironic is it that when a man who has been scared to ride a plane his whole life and when he finally decides to do so, the plane crashes down. Life is ironic indeed. It’s like, you’re given 60 seconds of happiness but in return you get 60 minutes of sadness. Yet people still wonder why some are scared to be happy, can’t they see? Once you’re happy, it slips away from your hold! It’s scary to know how things are going so smoothly, like everything is going perfect and falling into place, it’s scary because it seemed impossible, because in just a snap of your fingers, you’re back to zero, struggling with a new set of problems.
Ironic indeed.
The old cliché saying that all good things must come to an end really was true. Because one second Jennie found herself goofing around and having fun with her girlfriend and her sister and then all of a sudden she’s being confronted by Mr. and Mrs. Kim.
Mr. Kim was in his casual clothes today, a simple green polo shirt, ragged jeans and rubber shoes, his white coat was not with him today which meant he probably filed for a leave or maybe he was not on call today, but despite his laidback choice of outfit, his face remained the same, stony, intimidating and hella furious.
Mrs. Kim on the other hand was well wrapped up in at least 3 layers of clothing, the weather was cold indeed, she was also wearing boots and her hair was a bit messy, her face seemed drained and the bags under her eyes were getting darker. The baby face she used to sport was now vanishing from her.
“Where have you been?” Mr. Kim asked, his voice was calm but Jennie knew he was mad
Lisa was right beside her whilst Ella stood beside Lisa and held her hand tightly.
“And who is this?” Mrs. Kim asked as she pointed at Lisa with an unimpressed expression plastered on her face
Jennie hesitated. Was she ready to tell them who Lisa is? Because once she does, there will be consequences, her visiting hours for Ella might be cut down, her chance to spend the New Year with Ella might be out of the box, and her parents might finally find the excuse to take Ella away from her. But then again, this was Lisa, the one she loves.
“This is Lisa…my girlfriend” Jennie said
And in just matter of nanoseconds, Jennie saw hatred, disgust and disappointed in her parents eyes.
Don’t cry, Jennie. She thought as she clenched her jaw
Jennie immediately felt Lisa’s hand wrap around her shoulder, and she relaxed right away.
“Did you spread your virus? Or was she always one of the sinners in this world?” Mrs. Kim asked sarcastically
“Mrs. Kim” Jennie started
“HIV is on the rise these past few days, aren’t you afraid to catch it? But do tell us once you do, more reason to keep you away from our daughter” Mrs. Kim smiled
“Stop it” Jennie said
“So how long have you been dating this ?” Mrs. Kim asked
“Please don’t insult my girlfriend” Jennie said calmly
“You disgust me” Mr. Kim spoke “And you really have the nerve to bring this trash along with you while your with your younger sister?! The audacity!”
“My girlfriend isn’t trash” Jennie said through gritted teeth
“You both are” Mr. Kim said
“Eomma, Appa” Ella called out
“Get in the car!” Mr. Kim exclaimed Ella could not do anything but sigh and obey her parents; she was not even given the chance to hug Jennie and Lisa goodbye.
“Why are you here anyways?” Jennie asked
“You were supposed to return Ella to us at exactly 12 noon on the 26th and since you were taking long, we decided to pick her up ourselves” Mrs. Kim said
“Well you can leave now. Ella’s with you now, safe and sound” Jennie said
But Mr. Kim did not
