The History
Drops of GoldWhen I was born, there started to be riots in my city. America was declining as an empire at this point. The events that led to our downfall was the events of 911 and school shootings in the 2000s decade. Crime rates were supposed to be low, but the government was trying to keep its citizens in the dark, withholding vital information that could've saved us.
The ebola illness made its way into America. There was a very little chance of catching it but the country was overreacting to the news. Tension and anxiety ran high with the amount of police brutality and injustice aimed mostly at minorities. Little did we know that the feuding and illnesses were only minor issues.
The year I turned 17, officially, there was a new epidemic. It first started in Central America around the Yucatan area. The disease caused many to cough up blood, have red blotches on the backs and limbs of the person. The red abrasions would eventually turn yellow and fill the person's body with a pus-like substance. When the body filled with pus, the person would die, making the person take on a grey color. The color left behind is what the disease is named for. Grey Fever.
My parents contracted grey fever when I was 17 even though the first symptoms of it happened when I was 14 and slowly progressed. I began stealing medecine and antibiotics from black markets and hospitals. With my parents sick, I had no money to buy food so I ended stealing that too. Extended family and relatives tried to help as much as they could but, alas, no amount of praying and medecine could stop their deaths. Two years later, the rest of my family contracted grey fever and died. My brother, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins were gone by 2014. It left me without a home and scrapping the streets for food.
In 2015, they created an antidote but the population in the whole world lowered to only 10 million people. The population continuosly decreased. The government only had a few amounts of the antidote and to no surprise, they kept it for the president's family.
I, on the other hand, stole some of the vials from the black market. I only took one vial, drinking the gold- colored serum inside. The antidote left a mark on me, a large birthmark that looked like a twister on my chest that led to my bellybutton. It gave me everlasting life. I haven't aged at all since that day. Now, in 2565, I am one of the few people that survived grey fever along with thousands of others around the world. The remaining people rebuilt the world with hi-tech buildings and gadgets that evolved from the technology we had in 2014. the population built itself back up from the survivors.
Technically, I am 588 years old but I am forever frozen at 17. Beauty and youth permanently tattooed onto me. Even those that survived grey fever did not get immortality. Something in their genes prevented them from getting sick. Only I have immortality.
