Chapter 10
After that day in the hospital, Hyun hasn’t seen Hyukjae anywhere anymore. He doesn’t even visit her and didn’t even send a text message or phone call to check on her. No, nothing. It’s as if he has disappeared in her life.
Hyun has gotten the message that maybe he didn’t want her in his life anymore, so she didn’t even bothered to find him or flood his inbox with her text messages and phone calls because she knows that once Hyukjae decides on something, he would go all along with it no matter how people persuades him not to.
She was discharged from the hospital a few days later and after that, she went back to being her normal self again. She knows that it wouldn’t do the people around her good if she acted like how she did when she broke up with Hyukjae because it would only cause them worry. So she just decided to put on the façade and make herself look happy as if nothing happened to her at all.
Although she was always smiling and laughing whenever she’s around people, her smile on her face was immediately erased off every time she’s alone. Donghae knows it too since Hyun has been depending on Donghae ever since Hyukjae wasn’t there so he knew her well enough to know which of her smiles are real and which of it are fake.
Hyun was day dreaming in the class and not paying attention since she has already covered this topic that her teacher was teaching at home and understood everything already when Donghae interrupted her train of thoughts. ‘Hey, want to hang out after school today?’ He asked, nudging her arm. Hyun turned over to face him and wrinkled her nose, shaking her head and rejected his offer, ‘Nah, I’m going to go back home to rest, I’m kind of tired…’ She said as an excuse.
Donghae frowned and said it in low voice so that their teacher wouldn’t call him out, ‘Well, if you have realised it, you’ve been rejecting me all the time. What’s more, Tae Kyung and Haera don’t even hang out with me and you anymore ever since the new semester starts. I’m feeling bored on my own every single day just going straight home after school.’ Hyun chucked silently as Donghae leaned back to his seat, putting his hand at the back of his head as a support and pouted.
‘Well, maybe I’m somehow teaching you how to be independent.’ Hyun joked, but still not wanting to hang out after school because the fact is, although it has been a month ever since Hyukjae left her, she still hasn’t get over him. I meant, how can someone get over his or her first love that easily? ‘Yah, I don’t care. You’re going out with me today.’ Donghae simply stated, not caring if Hyun wanted to go or not. ‘But—’ Hyun tried to argue but Donghae just shushed her and pretended to listen to the lesson.
Hyun knows that it’s pointless to fight with Donghae because he’s a stubborn guy like that, so she just kept quiet and sighed inwardly.
After school, Donghae literally dragged Hyun to the cinema and allowed her to choose whatever movies she wants to watch. So she did and Donghae insisted in treating her with the movie tickets, popcorns and drinks. He also bought lots of food including hot dog sandwich and nachos into the theatre because he wanted Hyun to eat more since she has lost quite a significant amount of weight and looks unhealthy.
Throughout the whole movie, Donghae wasn’t actually paying attention to it, but he was actually looking at how Hyun would chuckle at some funny scenes, have her eyebrows knotted together in concentration at some other scenes, and smile at the sweet scene where the male lead finally got together with the female lead at the end. Donghae smiled to himself, feeling contented to be able to actually watch a movie with Hyun.
However, even though he was contented to be able to be Hyun’s best friend, it was enough. He wanted to be the guy who she needs and loves, he wanted to be the guy who would put a smile onto her face every time she sees him, and he wanted to be the guy who has as much effect as Hyukjae to Hyun. He just wanted to be the guy who Hyun would love.
