A Heavy Heart

Heart of Ice

Okay, this chapter is totally dedicated to Kai and everything that happened, okay? ^w^ Enjoy!

I'll bring Kyungsoo's situation back in the next chappie <3

Kai’s P.O.V (after Jen left):

‘So that’s it huh? She’s just going to leave?’ Kai thought bitterly as he gripped the steering wheel even tighter, choking the blood flow in his fingers.

He didn’t know how fast he was driving anymore… all he hazily saw was that the speedometer ticked upward slowly the more he drove. Everything was a daze – it was as if time around him was slowing down yet oddly moving incredibly fast at the same time.

His heart beat faster. His vision was distorted. And his mind… well…

His mind was a complete mess of jumbled thoughts and endless unanswered questions. He could barely even piece together how he felt at this very moment. Well… he knew how he felt in his heart but it was hard to put it into words. But then again, one particular word could pretty much sum everything up…

Love.

Maybe love was the thing driving him so crazy…

So crazy over Jen.

“Aish!” he hissed and slammed on the brakes, causing thick black tire streaks to trail behind the wheels of his car. He pulled out his phone and quickly dialed the number of the school’s office number.

“Hello Calif-,” began the woman.

“Yeah, cut the introduction,” Kai said hastily, “I need an address… can you get it for me?”

“But… sir we don’t-,” the woman began again before being interrupted by the impatient Kai.

“Don’t you know who you’re talking to?” Kai asked, each word he said so sharply it sent shivers down the woman’s spine, chilling her to the very core.

“W-Well… no but-,” the woman stammered.

“What if I said you were speaking to Kai?” Kai asked rhetorically with his jaw clenched in frustration, “And what if I said that I’ll surely make you regret every single day you live for the rest of your miserable life if you don’t get me the address I need?”

The woman gulped loudly over the phone and cleared , showing her fear audibly. “W-What… address do you n-need?”

‘Good girl,’ Kai thought smugly before answering. “Jenny Park’s address back in Korea.”

The sound of typing was heard over the line and the woman sighed a little before speaking again. “Okay, I’ve got it.”

Kai smirked in a satisfied manner to himself and began making an illegal U-turn in the street, heading back towards the airport. ‘I’ve got you now Jen.’

---

Kai boarded his own personal plane to Korea all the while thinking of ways to get back at Jen. No, he didn’t hate her. No, he wasn’t seeking revenge. He just wanted her to know that she couldn’t just up and leave him whenever she felt like it.

And what hurt the most was that… she didn’t seem to care when he was actually attempting to be nice for once. He wanted her to be nice to him like she was nice to everyone else. Every time they spoke it usually ended in an argument… was he really that bad of a person? And upon thinking that, a scary thought popped into his mind… was his love one-sided?

‘No… no it can’t be,’ he thought as he stared out of the plane window at the swirl of clouds below but the more he thought about it, the more he began to lose hope. Jen made it clear that she didn’t hate him but from her little “speech” earlier… she made it obvious that she didn’t like him either – she only “pitied” him.

“Well I don’t need your pity,” Kai grumbled stubbornly and folded his arms across his chest and slid down in his seat a little bit to get comfortable.

He hated feeling like this… he hated being in love with a girl who will never love him back…

---

Kai arrived in Korea around 10 pm and was absolutely exhausted from the flight. He hailed a taxi (much to his disapproval) and made his way to the Hilton Hotel in Seoul. It was convenient as it only a few blocks away from where Jen lived. And tomorrow he would let her have a piece of his mind… even if he couldn’t be with her, she still had no right to run off and make him worry about her.

He walked into his hotel room and immediately plopped down on the bed, closing his eyes. Even when he closed his eyes he could still see images of Jen burning intensely in his memory – it was as if he were reliving every moment… too bad most of these moments weren’t that great.

He made himself a silent promise that he would try to make better memories with Jen and then yawned, turning over on his side before finally letting the sleep wash over him.

---

~The Next Day~

Kai heavily disguised himself using a hat, scarf, and sunglasses along with a “commoner” outfit and headed out of the hotel, making his way towards Jen’s house. It was as if with each step he took, he felt a different emotion – all these emotions eventually becoming a chaotic mess in his mind.

He was angry… hurt… nervous… elated… confused… all in one at the thought of seeing Jen.

He glanced across the street and then he saw her, making him freeze in his tracks. He didn’t expect her to be out and about at this time of morning. ‘Where is she going though?’ he thought as he watched her. He couldn’t see the expression on her face but if he had, he would have known something was up.

He sneakily followed her up the street until she walked into this place called… Tavern? Kai looked up in confusion at the sign but it all wasn’t adding up. ‘Jen… at a bar?’ he thought, falling even more in confusion. Jen didn’t seem like the type to drink nor do anything bad along those lines.

Kai then decided to wait in the coffee shop across the street and wait for Jen to come out of the Tavern. He couldn’t wait to see the look on her face when he revealed himself and deep down… he hoped one of those looks would be happiness to see him.

---

~7 hours later~

Kai watched as people began leaving the Tavern but… where was Jen? He looked in the crowd, craning his neck to see every face but nope… still no sign of Jen. ‘Ahh jinjja… what could she be doing?’ he thought and ran his fingers through his hair.

He waited ten more minutes before leaving the coffee shop and heading over to the Tavern. ‘If she won’t come out then I’ll have to go in,’ he thought stubbornly and walked into the bar. It was completely dark save for the faint light in the kitchen. ‘Maybe she’s still cleaning,’ he thought as he opened the kitchen door and oh how wrong he was…

He walked in to see Jen passed out on the ground with an older man on top of her. His dry moans ceased when he heard Kai enter and he looked up, his eyes widening to the size of golf balls.

“Who are you?” the owner questioned calmly yet his voice was attempting to be threatening – Kai, of course, not being fazed at all by his words.

“Your worst nightmare,” Kai said through clenched teeth and grabbed the owner’s shirt, immediately yanking him up off of Jen. He punched the owner in the stomach but he quickly gathered himself and pushed Kai forcefully against the wall.

The owner punched him three times before Kai finally found the chance to attack and landed a firm punch on his cheek, causing the owner to stumble backwards. The owner was quick with his attacks but Kai’s had more power behind them.

Kai then tackled him to the ground and yelled at him with each punch he landed. “How… dare... you… hurt… Jen!!” he shouted angrily and didn’t stop punching until he busted a few knuckles. The blood trickled down his hand but he was too angry to think about the pain… it was actually taking everything in his being not to kill the owner right then and there. He had actually thought he killed him at first because he stopped moving after the fifth punch but the movement of his rising chest from him breathing proved otherwise.

Kai reluctantly got up thinking ‘Bastard…’ and went over to Jen, gently cradling her in his arms. She was in such bad shape… it hurt to see her like this. Her face was contorted to a look of pain and she had obvious signs of abuse mainly on her face and neck.

“I’m so sorry… I didn’t know. If only I had been here sooner…” Kai whispered sadly as he looked down at the poor girl and picked her up, walking out of the Tavern with her safe in his arms.

---

He gently laid her down on his hotel bed and brushed her hair out of her face with a sigh.

He couldn’t help but feel so… guilty. If he had only investigated sooner, none of this would have happened. He was too careless…

‘Aigoo…’ he sighed and grabbed a towel, carefully wiping off the blood on her face and then poured a bit of alcohol on the towel, dabbing every place that had an open wound; she flinched each time but remained unconscious.

Kai then went to go make her tea and as he was coming back, he knocked on the door but then he felt stupid… she was most likely still unconscious – or so he thought~

He walked in the room to see Jen sitting up on the bed and he jumped a little bit from being startled. “You’re awake…”

He looked at Jen and she stared back at him as if she had seen a ghost or something. He knew she was only surprised and surely had questions on her mind but her staring made him a bit uncomfortable so he walked in the room completely and set the tray of tea on her bedside.

“You should drink this,” Kai suggested. Hot tea always had a way of making him feel better so he hoped it would do the same for her.

He noticed Jen looking at him closely and began feeling a bit awkward until she finally spoke. “W-What… you… you’re hurt.”

Kai had actually never really paid attention to how bad his wounds were to be entirely honest. The only thing on his mind was making sure that Jen was okay. “That doesn’t matter,” he said hastily and offered her a cup of tea, “now drink.”

She surprisingly took the cup without protest and ended up coughing, making Kai panicky and he rushed to pat her back. ‘I messed up AGAIN,’ Kai thought pathetically and wanted to slap himself in the face.

“I… that was stupid of me,” he said softly while hanging his head in shame, “I’m sorry.”

“A-Ani…!” Jen exclaimed before clearing , “you just were trying to help…”

“Forgive me…” Kai said with his head still hung for a few moments before looking up at her.

“But… for what?” she asked in confusion and cocked her head slightly to the left.

“I was too stubborn… I shouldn’t have let you go,” Kai said and then turned away from her, unable to keep the eye contact, as he felt personally responsible for her getting hurt.

“You-,” Jen began.

“I told you to never leave my sight again and you did anyway,” Kai said bitterly. Even if she couldn’t be his, he wanted… no, needed to be close to her in some way, “You left me…”

“I’m sorry…” Jen said softly and lowered her head.

Kai sighed heavily and turned back to her and gently lifted her head up. He wiped away the tears Jen didn’t even realize were streaming down her face and gulped a bit before quickly drawing away his hand. He liked the skinship but became nervous at how Jen might possibly react so he kept it to a bare minimum.

“N-No… I’m sorry… I-I’m sorry I was too late to save you this time,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper and cracked with emotion. A lone tear slid down his face and he quickly wiped it away before clearing his throat awkwardly. He didn’t want her to see him cry… especially when he was the one who was supposed to be strong.

“So… you saved me?” Jen questioned and grabbed his hand, holding it in hers.

Kai did a gesture that was between a shrug and a nod, not really sure how to answer her question, and looked at their intertwined hands with a small sad smile. “If only I had gotten there sooner…”

“Stop!” Jen suddenly blurted and angrily wiped away the fresh tears that had spilled from her eyes, “Please… I don’t want to hear anymore.”

Kai was a mixture of being utterly shocked and confused by her sudden outburst and was about to protest but Jen interrupted him. “You’ve been beating yourself up this whole time… don’t you know how grateful I am to you? Kai-ya…” she sighed and wiped away a few stray tears, “you saved me. If… if it weren’t for you I’d-,”

Kai then abruptly pulled Jen into his arms, stopping her mid-sentence. He didn’t want to hear anything more about what could’ve possibly happened had he not shown up. He felt her struggle against him but that only made him embrace her tighter – he knew she wasn’t trying to truly push him away however.

He whispered comforting things in her ear like: “It’ll be okay… I’m here now, no one will hurt you” as he slowly rocked back and forth on the bed with her in his arms.

“Don’t leave me…” Jen mumbled into his shoulder as she was still tightly holding onto him.

“I wont… I promise,” Kai vowed and completely climbed onto the bed, lying down beside her. He hesitantly wrapped his arms around her and Jen scooted closer to him clearly approving of the comfort and security he was providing and shut her eyes.

‘I won’t let you down again Jen… I promise. From now on I’m going to protect the girl I love,’ was Kai’s last thought before pulling Jen a little closer and fell asleep with a heavy heart within a matter of minutes.
