My Dear Twin

Selina stared back at him lost and turned as she heard loud footsteps outside of the room.

“Selina!” Hebe’s loud voice called as she ran in. “Are you ok?”

Selina almost tipped over as Hebe ran toward her.

“Yea,” Selina replied.

Hebe nodded toward Jiro in greeting and led Selina out.

Selina was silent the whole car ride.

“So tell me,” Hebe urged, “what happened?”

“I caught another killer,” Selina mumbled.

Hebe frowned and pinched Selina’s arm.

“Ow!” Selina screamed.

“Wake up,” Hebe said, “what happened other than that? Why did you end up in the hospital?”

“That stupid idiot bugged into my business,” Selina complained, “we fell into a gorge of water and I almost died. End of story.”

Selina rolled her eyes. Even just thinking about it angered her.

“He must have been worried about you to come after you,” Hebe said as she drove on. “Do you have something with that police officer? The last time I went to tell him that you were kidnapped you should have seen his face.” Hebe laughed then pointed out, “He saved your life again.”

Worried? Selina wanted to laugh, but realized it to be the truth. He wouldn’t have come after her if he didn’t care so much. Who asked him to care so much anyway?! Maybe the situation would have gotten 20 times worse if Jiro hadn’t come after her. Why should she care? Selina stared out of the window trying to come up with something that she would be able to capture Chang Jiang with.

“Seriously every damn thing that happens gets more and more bizarre,” Selina complained, “either it’s bad luck or the jerk brings the bad luck.”

Hebe laughed beside her.

“I’m telling the truth!” Selina said defending her stand. “During my whole career I have never been attacked or hurt by anyone. But during these two cases I’ve been through things even my boss would consider crazy. I cannot believe this.”

“Which one do you like?” Hebe asked.

“Hebe!”

Hebe laughed, “The one who comes to the rescue or the one who waits for you?”

“Hebe! I swear…”

“Ok, ok,” Hebe said giving up, “besides you know Evan I can’t believe he’s Aaron’s twin. We didn’t even hear anything about Aaron back then did we?”

Selina stared at the front road found herself considering meeting with Jiro’s father. Maybe he did have a reason to put the case onto a hold. Selina should find out whatsoever shouldn’t she? Every little information regarding Xuan would be a big help to her.

===

“Are you ok?” Jiro’s father asked as he walked beside Jiro to the car.

“I’m fine,” Jiro replied, “I’m not as hurt as Selina.”

“Investigative reporter?” his father asked.

“I told her about you. I know she’ll call pretty soon to get an appointment,” Jiro said turning to look at his father.

===

Selina sat around for a day. She wouldn’t be able to get out without her car. Maybe a taxi could take her, but her ankle wouldn’t let her walk far. Time was running out and what if Chang Jiang was already on the run? Selina felt angry with herself. She had wanted to do it by herself so bad, but it had turned out against her. Selina grabbed her phone calling the police station. Again it took about 15 minutes until she was finally through.

“Wang Dong Cheng,” his voice came.

“I have a favor,” Selina said.

“I thought you said you wouldn’t ask for anything anymore,” Jiro told purposely to annoy her.

“Play stupid with me then. I need you to arrest Chang Jiang, the man that was chasing us yesterday. He told me himself he was the killer,” Selina said, “you can do that can’t you?”

“I already set my foot on it,” Jiro responded, “the cops have gone this morning. Since I already stepped in your business might as well finish it off.”

“You’re real cocky aren’t you?”

“More than so.”

Selina was silent.

“Don’t you have something else to say?” Jiro asked.

Selina bit her lip, “Alright then Mr. Great. Let me meet with your father, but I won’t be able to get around right now. Either wait for the meeting next week or you come over.”

A day passed by quietly. Selina did nothing, but run things over in her mind. It was Friday afternoon when her doorbell rang. Selina got up from her spot on the sofa and turned the TV off. Before unlocking the door she took a peek through the window to see that it was an old man in a brown jacket. Unlocking the door Selina let him in.

He had a round face with a gray mustache under his nose. His hair had gone gray as well. Jiro’s father was not too skinny and not too fat and he carried an aura of comfort. Selina closed the door and invited him to sit down at the kitchen table. She poured a glass of water and set it in front of him.

“It’s really nice outside what a shame to be stuck inside huh?” he said starting off the conversation as he took a sip of the cup of water.

“It is,” Selina replied.

The old man’s eyes moved from the table to Selina’s face. He seemed to observe her for a bit.

“I heard you’re an investigative reporter,” he said.

Selina nodded, “It’s a job I always wanted to do.”

Mr. Wang smiled at her, “You really are an outstanding person. You’ve grown from a young child to such a strong person.”

“No one stays innocent forever,” Selina commented.

“You work for Prescon?” he asked.

“How do you know that?”

“Jiro often talks about you. I think you impress him a lot,” Mr. Wang said, “from the way you work to your personality.”

“What about Prescon?” Selina said shuffling his words about Jiro aside.

Whatever Jiro said about her didn’t matter to her. She wanted to meet his father just for one thing.

“Wes Yan has two sons and they’re both twins, but one of them is mentally ill and incapable of carrying on the business,” Mr. Wang started off, “while his other son was sent abroad to receive special teaching lessons Evan was sent to a normal high school where he would be able to interact with normal kids his age.”

Selina could feel herself become attached to his voice.

“The cabin resort belonged to his family because they often went there together during holidays when Wes’ wife was still alive,” Mr. Wang continued, “but they stopped going there after she passed away. Evan kept insisting on going back there even if no one wanted to go with him.”

“And so…” Selina said.

“The only suspect I found was Evan Yan,” Mr. Wang told, “but his father insisted that because his brother had returned from England November 25 it wasn’t possible for Evan to have gone to the cabin. I checked Evan’s medical records and found that he had to take pills continuously to keep him under control. Without the pills his emotions would change severely and he would become unpredictable. Chances were high that Evan was the suspect, but his father slashed out on us. After a few court sessions my boss at the police station told me to put down the case and forced it to close down.”

“And you did as told?” Selina said coldly.

“I had no choice. If I continued with the case without their knowledge I would have been fired,” Mr. Wang explained.

“Isn’t that illegal to force a case to close down?” Selina questioned.

“Wes had a lot of control on politics when he was still active,” Mr. Wang told, “if he made one move against any of us we would have lost our money and our jobs as well. His power back then wasn’t just a joke.”

Selina bit her lip. Haven’t they ever thought of how much she and her family had suffered? All those years had they only cared about themselves?! Selina wanted to scream at him, but knew better. He had taken his time to come over to tell her the reason behind it all and the rest Selina would take care of by herself.

“Thank you for telling me,” Selina thanked gesturing that it was the end of their conversation.  “I really appreciate you telling me this.”

Jiro’s father nodded and got up from his chair, “Living alone like this aren’t you scared?”

“There’s nothing to be scared of,” Selina replied, “the scariest things on earth are humans themselves.”

Aaron glanced into the journalism office. For some reason Selina had not picked up his calls and had not returned his missed calls. Was she too busy with something else? Or was she extremely angry?

Selina’s desk was empty that Saturday. It wasn’t that he’d expected her to be at work, but Selina had usually come in for at least a little bit before attending to her other matters. Selina’s boss suddenly came walking out of the room and noticing Aaron he paused.

“Are you looking for Selina?” he asked. “Boy, a lot of people are looking for her these days.”

“Did she come in today?” asked Aaron anxiously.

“She called in saying she’s been injured. Unluckily she can’t move around a lot for a week, but she’ll be here starting next week Thursday,” Selina’s boss clarified.

“Is that so?” Aaron said.
