Lighthearted

(un)optional [EDITING]

She was sitting at her favourite coffee shop. Residing at her usual table in the secluded corner, she had her headphones on. Humming to the music, Jamie attempted to draw again after a period of abandon it for singing and dancing. It was very hard though, when her mind was caught up with something else.

Despite gluing her eyes to her meaningless doodles, Jamie could sense a presence nearing her area, may or may not be staring at her. The figure, male she guess, suddenly stopped in front of her table. She still didn’t look up even though her pencil ceased its movement. She waited for the figure to make a move. Their hands suddenly reached out, closing in towards her head. Before they could touch her, she caught the unknown figure left wrist, making them stop right away. Looking up, her eyes widened upon seeing the familiar sad brown eyes, staring at her, without a single smile on his face.

“What do you want Oh Sehun ssi?” Jamie sighed, letting go of his wrist and slipping her headphones off.

“Let’s talk.” Sehun pleaded as he sat down in front of her. His heart ached seeing how she tried all her might to avoid eye contact.

“We have nothing to talk about.”

“Please Jamie. This can not go on. I can’t handle this.”

“Go away Sehun.”

“Please Jamie.” He begged the girl, touching her right hand which was scribbling non sense across the blank page.

"I told you, I have nothing to say to you.” Jamie hissed, getting annoyed with his persistence.

Agitated, Sehun gritted his teeth menacingly. It’s not right for her to ignore him for two weeks without a justified reason. “I believe we do after you kicked me out of your apartment after kissing you which I apologised and then you pretend like I never exist. So yea I believe we need a good talk.”

Biting her lips, Jamie realised how he had been able to bottle up all the negative emotions until now. And the fact he didn’t snap upon her cold attitude was a miracle to whoever in concern. She knew this would happen sooner or later.

“Alright. We’ll talk.” She clenched her jaw, slamming her pencil down, giving up on trying to draw at all. “Let’s talk.”

“Let’s go somewhere else more private.” Sehun suggested and stood up but Jamie looked at him like he’s crazy, refusing to leave her sanctuary. “You wouldn’t want everybody hearing what our conversation would be about.”

“And what do you think it would be about?” Jamie tilted her head and glared at him.

“It would be about what you want it to be about.” Sehun placed his palm on the table, leaning towards the said girl, feeling very frustrated with the cold attitude. “So unless you want everybody to witness what will become of this conversation, I suggest we go somewhere we could talk privately.”

“You wish.” Jamie glared back, levelled her eyes with his by standing up with her arms crossed in front of her chest.

Sighing exasperatedly, Sehun began to gather her sketchbook, pencil case and coffee then proceeded to walk towards the entrance. Mouth gaped open, Jamie watched as her stuffs get robbed in front of her eyes. Eyes fumed with anger, she yanked her bag off the lounge and stomped after Sehun.

“Yah! Oh Sehun! Give me back my stuffs!!!” She hollered, pulling Sehun’s shirt to make him stop.

The boy did stop, but had no intention to return Jamie her belongings. “You forced me to take drastic measure.” He said nonchalantly before turning around to continue going to who knows where, leaving Jamie to catch up.

Huffing childishly, Jamie had no choice but to follow him, knowing she couldn’t get her things back without kneeing the tall boy in the nuts. Might as well sort this out once and for all. She thought.

They walked and walked with Jamie silently cursing Sehun under her breath, not actually paying attention of her surroundings. Hearing the not-so-subtle curses, Sehun’s mouth quirked up into a small smile. She just blindly follow wherever people took her, so stupidly fearless. Or just incredibly absentminded.

“Hey, we’re here.” Sehun announced, not after stopping abruptly, causing Jamie to bumped into him.

“Oww… Don’t stop so suddenly stupid.” She scowled, rubbing her nose.

Scoffing at her childish manner, Sehun gave Jamie back her sketch book and pencil case but held on to the coffee, bravely taking a sip.

Her happiness was cut short when she saw what the stoic boy just did. “Hey! How dare you drink it??!! !” She shouted.

Sehun ignored the shrilly voice to display his disdain with the bitter beverage. “Blehhh~ I hate coffee.”

“Then don’t drink it.” She sneered, reaching out to snatch it back but Sehun was faster. He held the plastic cup above his head, smirking as Jamie jumped to reach it, which was impossible.

“GIVE! IT! BACK!” She yelled with each jump but Sehun only laughed while raising it even higher.

“Promise you will talk to me properly, I’ll give it back.” He striked a deal as the little girl gave up trying. It was impossible getting something 20 cm from your reach.

“I-I p-promise.” She panted.

Grinning victoriously, Sehun pointed towards the higher terrain. “Okay. Let’s go to the tree over there.”

Glancing towards the male’s finger direction, Jamie nearly snapped at him for making her climb after depleting her energy with his stupid game. However her eyes lit up as she took in the huge tree at the best spot of whole park.

“Come on.” Sehun smiled faintly, tugging her forearm.

The boy didn’t have to say twice before she was on her feet, skipping towards the beautiful tree. Shaking his head at the bipolar midget, Sehun couldn’t stop how his heart pumped quickly at the sight of her cute small figure, with little springs under her feet. She looked so happy as her eyes crinkled, the corners of curved into that of a kitten and more so her childlike laugh was what made his heart swelled. Sehun followed the jumpy figure along the slanted slope as they both climbed their way towards the huge tree. Her short legs were no match to his long ones but he didn’t try to surpass her instead pushing her up when the girl showed signs of struggling. Muttering a small thanks between her ragged breathing, Jamie couldn’t help but think how she missed these normal moments with Sehun; when they didn’t have to deal with lies, heartbreak and jealousy. As they reached their destination, Jamie breathed a sarcastic ‘yay’ before plopping down under the enormous shade formed by the tree. Sehun chuckled at the forever ungraceful girl but said nothing as he sat down beside her. Placing the coffee cup back into her hand, he laughed when she beamed with delight, gulping down the remains of the melted drink. He knocked lightly on her hand, reminding her to slow down or she’d choke like she did numerous times they hung out together. Jamie pursed her lips and glared at the young boy but obeyed him anyways. She didn’t want to choke on liquid because when you do, they came out of your nose. Not a pretty sight.

“It’s nicer than I thought, up here.” Sehun commented as he laid back against the trunk. The rough exterior poked his back uncomfortably but he rather do so then laid down completely besides her.

“The wind is slightly chilly though.” Jamie quivered as she rubbed her exposed forearms where goosebumps started to form. “I never bring things when I actually need them.”

Jamie jolted when she felt something soft resembled fabric slipped onto her shoulders. Turning back, she blushed when Sehun flashed her a small smile.

“Thanks.” She bit her lip and averted her eyes from the male who was apparently staring at her the whole time. Jamie pulled the cardigan tighter over her body, relished in the warmth it brought.

The pair sat there in silence, looking at the same scenery with million thoughts across their minds but found no method to convey them. It was surprisingly hard for one went weeks without talking to each other to resume the said activity. Sehun stole occasional glances at the young girl while trying to watch the same she was watching. After several tries of locating the must-be-extremely-interesting object that deserved her utmost attention, Sehun gave up as he realised there’s no such thing. She just stared aimlessly onto the vast green field in front. Inhaling lungs full of air, Sehun braved himself to speak the first word since what seems like hours.

“You’re ignoring me again.”

Upon hearing the first word from the young boy after the agonising silence, Jamie whipped around dumbfoundedly.

“H-huh?” She blurted out dumbly.

“I said you’re ignoring me again.” Sehun chuckled but his eyes seems so sad that Jamie regretted looking right at them.

“I- I wasn’t. I was j-just… t-thinking…” Jamie trailed off lamely as Sehun smiled and looked down at his stretched out legs.

“So you were ignoring me.”

Jamie could only stared at the crestfallen boy with guilty eyes. She knew she could no longer say things she didn’t mean. She didn’t like seeing Sehun so down. Honestly, she preferred jerk-Sehun over depressed-Sehun.

Sehun looked up from his lap for a brief moment once Jamie leaned back against the same bumpy trunk with her legs out stretched just like his.

“Sehun ah.” She called his name softly as his heart beat faster. He liked how his name sounded through her voice, so soft and velvety.

“Hmm?” His voice miraculously sounded stable despite the chaos inside him.

“I’m sorry.”

“What for?”

“For ignoring you obviously.”

Sehun turned his head to his left and was mildly surprised to see her looking at her. Jamie offered him an apologetic smile.

“You’re forgiven.” Sehun grinned as he pinched her chubby cheek.

Despite her furrowed brows, Jamie grinned upon being forgiven. She was glad Sehun was nice enough to do so. She didn’t want to lose a good friend like Sehun.

“Thank you. For forgiving me.”

“Can I ask you something though?” Sehun asked as he drew his legs close to his chest and rested his chin on top of his knees.

Jamie chuckled and copied his pose. “Go ahead.”

“Why did you ignore me?”

Something jabbed her guts when the sadness shadowed Sehun’s bright eyes for the nth time of the day. She hurt him so much. He didn’t deserve such treatment. Apart from their ugly first encounter, Sehun had been nothing but sweet towards her. He might poke fun of her a lot, he never inflict her any pain.

“That was the only thing I could think of at that moment. I’m really sorry Sehun.” Jamie murmured as she cowered her head lower into her fetal position.

“Thinking about it, I was at fault too. So you don’t have to feel so guilty Jamie. I understood why you ignored me.” Sehun ruffled her hair, knowing how she hated it when it got tangled. It got her attention though she wasn’t mad. Jamie smiled and smoothed the messy strands into their place.

“I just don’t understand why you would come to Kyungmin instead of someone else. Baekhyun hyung would make a better candidate. He’s quite fond of you, you know.”

“I didn’t want to bother him…”

“So you come to Kyungmin just because of that?” Sehun raised an eyebrow at the girl’s weird logic.

When she nodded, Sehun could do nothing except sighing because really? Who would ever come back to their tormentor, not to mention laughing and hugging them. It’s absurd. Jamie’s logic always managed to appear twisted to him.

“Your weirdness couldn’t even be described with a novel. It wouldn’t suffice.” Sehun shook his head in disapproval.

“He wasn’t that bad once you get to know him.” Jamie argued because she knew it’s true. Kyungmin wasn’t that bad. He was just in the phase where his vision wasn’t clear and he couldn’t help but got into trouble.

“So you trust him a 100%? Not even a speck of doubt he might have something up his sleeves?”

“Of course not. I trust him at least 70%. It’s likely he had things up his sleeves but I don’t think he could pass without me noticing.” Jamie retorted.

“You’re so unbelievably naive.” Sehun laughed bitterly. So naive I’m afraid you would get hurt again.

“I know.” Jamie smiled. “But I believe everyone has good in them. Not to others but at least to themselves. I know for a fact that either you love others nor yourself. It’s not possible to not love anyone and yourself. Everyone was given a heart for a reason. In spite all the things I say, I must verify that it doesn’t mean I don’t hate anyone. I hated Kyungmin but after I saw his good side, I decided that he didn’t deserve the hate. So I ‘unhate’ him. I could forgive someone if they meant their apology. And he meant it.”

“If you’re so forgiving, it’s just a matter of time before somebody takes advantage of you.” Sehun sighed worriedly.

“Someone already did.” Jamie mumbled into her folded arms.

Sehun cocked his eyebrows in confusion but sensing how she didn’t want to talk about it, he let it go. They slipped into silence again however it was the comfortable kind this time around. They leaned back and watched little kids from afar playing frisbee. Their small bodies chased after the flying disk, jumping up, falling down but their smiles never ceased from their innocent face. Watching them made Jamie wonder if she could smile like them if she were to fall again. It made not be possible but she promised herself she would always stand up regardless how hard the fall was.

“Do you think it’s okay to think someone will always be there to catch you when you fall?” Jamie spoke softly as she shifted closer to Sehun since the wind picked up slightly.

Eyes widened as their shoulders brushed so subtly, Sehun stared at Jamie’s side profile until she turned to him and stared back. His eyes shuffled between her black orbs to her cute nose to her plump lips.

“It’s totally okay.” Sehun found his lips moved but his mind didn’t register how he came up with such answer. “I think it’s okay to think so.”

“Really?” Jamie breathed as her gaze moved to Sehun’s small pink lips. She felt it came closer and closer to her own. She felt something stirred within her stomach and she feared how it slowly overpowered her rationality. It’s not right, she knew that much. It’s not right to Sehun.

As the distance between them lessened, Jamie could feel Sehun’s breath against her skin and it tingled her spine. It was happening unless she did something about it.

“I will be there for you.” Sehun whispered as Jamie swallowed. Just a little nudge and there would be literally nothing between them.

Closing her eyes, Jamie fought hard with what’s left of her rationality. Because what her decision was crucial. It could either save or destroy their relationship. And Jamie didn’t want to lose Sehun.

When she was about to put her hands onto his shoulders to stop him, Sehun’s lips surprisingly landed on her right cheek. Jamie blinked furiously when Sehun pulled away reluctantly as he held the tip of her purple hair between his fingers.

“I will always be there for you, Jamie.” Sehun whispered and tucked then purple strands behind her ear. “You can count on me.”

Biting her lips, Jamie shifted her body away from the male’s warmth, clutching on the hem of his sweater. She didn’t dare to look at the handsome male next to her. She’s afraid the guilt would start to seep into her system. It’s selfish because she didn’t want to feel guilty. After all guilt would bring pity and sympathy. Those feelings bounded to bring hurt and she didn’t want to hurt Sehun.

“Let’s go back.” Jamie said softly as she slung her messenger bag over her shoulder and stood up.

Sehun felt a pang to his heart as the young girl stood up without looking at him even once. As he felt a lump formed in his throat, her voice surprised him.

“Sehun-ah, let’s go.”

The boy looked up to find Jamie turned back as she stepped out of the comforting shade. Her purple hair turned into a lighter shade of dark pink with a smile graced on her lips.

“I’m going to leave you if you keep sitting there.” The girl said sternly as she stuffed her hands into the sweater’s pockets and stalked off.

“Wait!” Sehun hollered after the small figure while scrambling quickly onto his feet.

The young male caught up with the purple midget in no time with his long legs and they walked side by side with the young male grinning from ear to ear.

If only he had realised sooner that she had indeed draw a line between them.
