Calla Lily

The first time that Sehun and Hayoung had met was on the day before a new school year had started. They were at a neighbourhood park and were watching their younger brother and sister playing at a playground. They had sat on one of the park benches as they saw their younger siblings play with each other. Hayoung decided to break the silent atmosphere by speaking up first.

“Is that your little sister?”

“Ne. Is that your younger brother?”

“Ne. Are you new here? I’ve never seen you around before.”

“We moved here about a week ago.”

“How do you like the neighbourhood so far?”

“It’s quiet and nice.”

“How old are you?”

“I’m 17. And you?”

“I’m 17 as well.”

“What’s your name?”

“Hayoung. Oh Hayoung. How about you?”

“Sehun. Oh Sehun.”

“Do you think we’re some long lost family members or something?”

“I don’t think so. There’s no one as pretty as you in my family.”

Hayoung giggled and Sehun realised his slip of the tongue.

“Mianhae. I meant that…you don’t have typical Korean features. Maybe you’re not fully Korean?”

“Ani. I’m fully Korean.”

“I see. How long have you lived here?”

“In the park?”

“Ha. Funny. I meant, in the neighbourhood.”

“Since I was born.”

“Where do you go to school?”

“I go to the one just across from here.”

“You mean that one?”

“Ne.”

“I’m going to school there too! Starting tomorrow!”

“Well…I guess I’ll see you around more.”

“I guess you will.”

Just then,  Sehun’s younger sister bolted up to them.

“Oppa! I’m tired. Can we go home?”

“Ahrasso. Did you have fun playing?”

She nodded her head.

“I made a new friend.”

Hayoung’s little brother came running up to them as well.

“This is him.”

Sehun and the little boy shook hands.

“Oppa? Who’s the girl next to you?”

“This is your Unnie, Hayoung. She’s your friend’s older sister.”

“Ohhhhh…”

Sehun picked her up as they started to walk away.

“I think I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Ne. See you tomorrow.”

As Sehun was walking home, his little sister poked him on the cheeks.

“Oppa! You look happy! You like her, don’t you?”

“I just met her!”

“But you like her!”

“How can you say these things? You’re only five years old!”

“I’m five, but I’m smart. And I know that you like her.”

“I don’t!”

“Okay then…but she’s very pretty. Like a flower…”

“She is…”

They walked home and Sehun couldn’t get Hayoung out of his mind. He usually didn’t like going to school, but he was very excited for his first day tomorrow. When they got back into the house, their mother was setting up the table.

“Omma! We’re back!”

The little girl ran up to their mother and gave her a big hug.

“How was the playground?”

“It was really good! I made a new friend, Omma! And Oppa did too…”

“That’s good to hear…”

“Omma! Want to know a secret?”

“Eo. Tell me?”

The little girl pretended to whisper into her mother’s ear, but Sehun could hear every word. She still didn’t understand how to fully whisper.

“Oppa like a girl!”

“Oh? He does?”

His mother winked at him, and Sehun felt like he could die of embarrassment.

“That’s not true, Omma!”

“I’ll believe you...but you seem very happy after babysitting your sister!”

Sehun couldn’t do anything besides sit down at the table. He tried to change the subject when he saw a new vase of flowers on the table.

“Omma! Where did these come from?”

“Our new neighbours gave them to us. Aren’t they pretty?”

Sehun nodded his head as his sister spoke up.

“Are they as pretty as me, Omma?”

“Of course, you’re prettier!”

The family ate some dinner together and Sehun went straight to bed after washing up. The next day, he got up early from all the butterflies in his stomach. He even prepared breakfast. His mother came downstairs, surprised that her son had woken up before her.

“Sehun-ah? You’re up early?”

“Ne. I couldn’t sleep.”

“You made breakfast?”

“Ne. Here, have some coffee…”

“Omma. I’ve already finished and washed up. I’ll go to school first.”

“Ahrasso.”

On his way out the door, Sehun spied the vase of flowers. He decided to pick one and take it to school to give to Hayoung. He didn’t know why, but he was infatuated with her. She’s seems like a very simple girl

He realised he was early so he made a detour to the park to sit down first. He thought about meeting her again and he couldn’t help but smile. Someone tapped him on the shoulder and he broke out of his thought.

“You’re here again?”

“Hayoung-ah…”

“How did you know I came here every morning before school?”

“I didn’t. I just realised I was early and decided to stay here for a bit.”

“Eo! You have a flower?”

“Ah…ne.”

He scratched the back of his neck.

“Who is it for?”

“Uhhh…it’s for…you.”

He handed it to her and she smiled.

“Gomawo. You didn’t have to.”

She playfully hit him and Sehun thought his eyes were shooting out heart. She looks really pretty in a school uniform

“Are you ready for school?”

“Not really. I was average in school, and I didn’t have many friends.”

“Well, you’re lucky. You already made one friend before you even went inside the school building.”

“Who?”

“Who else? Me, of course!”

“That’s right. I forgot about you…”

“Hey!”

They started laughing and poking each other’s sides.

“It’s a pretty flower…”

“It is…”

“Do you know what it means?”

“My Omma said it’s called a Calla Lily. Apparently it means purity and innocence…”

“So you’re innocently just giving it to me?”

“Huh? I guess…”

“You’re cute, when you pretend to be clueless…”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you sure you didn’t fall in love with me yesterday?”

“Huh?”

“Don’t worry I was just joking…”

“Oh…”

“Mmmm…it’s really pretty…”

They continued to sit there, talking about nothing and everything. Sehun really liked her. She seemed to be a very easy going person that was friendly and easy to talk to. He liked her even more because she took the initiative to become his friend, since he wouldn’t have known how to approach her. He watched as she tucked the flower behind her ear.

“Do I look pretty?”

“Very pretty…”

Hayoung checked her watch and found out they were late for class.

“Yah! We’re late!”

“Really?”

She nodded her head as Sehun grabbed her hand and they ran towards the school. I don’t care if I make a bad impression on my first day…as long as I made a good impression on her…

Just wow, an incredibly amazing and breath-taking series of oneshots! I really enjoyed how all the stories share the theme of flowers as the little element they have in common. However, each one of them was very unique and beautifully written. Thank you for the great read!
