The Language of Flowers [REQUESTS CLOSED]

AN: So…APINK’s new EP has been released, and as usual, I absolutely love all the songs on the album and I can’t wait for my copy to arrive. I wrote this oneshot because I was inspired by the lyrics. Summer is here, in the Philippines and it put me in a good mood to write some summer-themed love stories. Hope you guys enjoy!

Time flies when we are alone together

The afternoons that Bomi spent with Kyungsoo were precious. They were neighbours ever since Bomi could remember, and when Kyungsoo and his parents came over to their home to greet the newcomers in the apartment building, they had become fast friends. Bomi went to an all-girls school and Kyungsoo went to the all-boys school next door. Every day, without fail, Kyungsoo would be waiting for Bomi outside the school gates and they would go to their favorite frozen yogurt place and study there.

At first, they would get separate cups, but after a year, they would share a giant one, after Bomi had mistakenly grabbed Kyungsoo’s spoon and took a bite while she was reading through her history homework. When she tasted the unfamiliar strawberry flavour, instead of her usual taro flavour, she looked up to see Kyungsoo smiling and pointing at her cup. “Sorry…” Bomi ducked her head in embarrassment, and pulled her cup closer to her, but she did like the taro flavour. The next day, Kyungsoo got in line in front of her, and ordered a giant cup with strawberry and taro flavour, and put all of her favorite toppings on top. “You want to share with me?” He just shrugged and then sat down at their usual table. Oh yeah, they only used one spoon as well.

When Bomi left her group of friends at the end of the day to meet Kyungsoo, they always nudged her and , making remarks about whether they had kissed yet as they walked off in the other direction. Kyungsoo’s friends were the same, but were slightly worse in their teasing. Bomi thought it was odd. They kept asking about what base they were at. She didn’t understand why they would use baseball references. Before she could ask them what it meant, Kyungsoo put his arm around her and steered her in the other direction.

As Bomi grew older, she decided to keep a diary. While they were doing their homework, Bomi would sneak in her diary in amongst the open textbooks and write about her day, while stealing glances at the boy next to her. If you took a good look, all the entries were about him. One smile, a pat on the head for doing good in a test, playing footsie under the table and even just eating from the same spoon, it would acquire a page of Bomi’s thoughts and feelings in her diary. The margins were filled with little doodles of hearts and smiley faces, and after she took art class, Bomi would draw his side profile.

In their final year of school, Bomi had filled seven diaries. After their graduation, Kyungsoo waited for Bomi again outside the gates. “Want to go grab one last cup of fro-yo with me?” Bomi saw a sparkle in his eye when he said this, and she took his arm and they walked to their favorite table, which already had a cup waiting for them. Kyungsoo whispered into her ear. “Don’t worry. It’s not some weird leftover. I asked them to have it ready.”

When they had finished eating, she turned to him. “I have a present for you.” Bomi ped her bag and took out her last journal and slid it in front of him. “Your diary?” She shook her head. “Ani. It’s my memories…of you…” Kyungsoo flipped it over to the first page, read it thoroughly and then read through a few more before skipping to the last page. Bomi was nervous, because he wasn’t smiling. When Kyungsoo reached the end, he took out a post-it note and pen from his bag. He scribbled a quick message on it before sticking it on the back cover.

To be continued…let’s make more memories together, Bomi.

-Kyungsoo

When I see you once, I want to see you twice more

When I see you two, three times, I want to hug you

I want to walk down this road with these ‘couple rings’ on our hands

Sehun slammed two movie tickets in front of Hayoung at the booth. “Sehun-ssi…aren’t I supposed to be giving you tickets?” A smile tugged at the corner of his lips and he lifted a finger and moved it from side to side. “Not tonight, baby…you have the night off, and as your boyfriend, I am demanding that you spend it with me.” The manager came and tapped her on the shoulder, ready to relieve Hayoung of her duties. “Go on. You’re a lucky girl to have him. He begged me for weeks to let him do his surprise for you. Have some fun tonight.” Hayoung bowed and then walked over to where Sehun was leaning against the wall, with a bag of popcorn in his hands. “Ready?” She nodded her head and he wrapped his arms around her and lead her over to the furthest cinema.

Hayoung walked into the darkened room, and looked around, finding that it was empty except for them. Sehun led her over to the most middle seats and sat down. “Don’t tell me we’re watching a zombie movie again?” Sehun poked her cheek. “Of course not. It’s just that this is a special movie, that especially suits the two of us.” Hayoung scrunched her nose, but still looked towards the screen as the lights dimmed even further and the screen came to life. When she turned to look at Sehun, he was gone. She heard the first notes of a song start to play and she turned her attention again to the screen.

“It was a love at first sight.” Sehun narrated the words that came up on the screen. She looked around, scanning the cinema for where that voice had emerged from. A picture of a seventeen year old Hayoung popped up onto the screen. She could remember that day clearly. It was her first day at her new job at the cinema, and the first customer that she had served was Sehun. “Love at second sight.” Another picture came up again, this time, when Hayoung was serving popcorn, and the time that Sehun had watched a movie two days in a row. “Even at third sight, I’m pretty sure that I was already in love with you.” A picture of Hayoung walking home from her third shift at the cinemas came up. “I’m pretty sure that you think I’m a stalker since I took a picture of you walking home…but…I just had to.” The rest of the ‘movie’ was a slideshow of all the photographs that Sehun and Hayoung had taken together after he had asked her on their first date.

“Happy 200 Days, baby…” When Hayoung turned to the seat next to her, he was by her side again. The lights came on and the couple were left sitting in the silence. All of a sudden, Hayoung felt Sehun take both her hands in his and then pulled her into a hug. When they pulled away, Hayoung saw a new ring on her finger. She looked at him with a puzzled expression, but he lifted his hand and showed his matching ring. He dragged her up onto her feet and out the cinema. “Yah! Oh Sehun! Where are you taking me again?” She just saw the widest grin on his face. “Come on, let’s go show off our new rings!”

Namjoo felt like the only girl in the world when Chanyeol looked at her. When they had first locked eyes at the school assembly, Namjoo always felt special when he looked at her. Namjoo was performing on stage with her friends, and she was furthermost right, while Chanyeol was seated in the front while he waited to receive an award. Namjoo’s eyes were scanning the crowd for a point where she could stare at and not feel so self-conscious, but she accidentally looked to the front row, and saw the smartest guy in the school staring right back at her. She found her focal point, and instead of getting even more nervous with his attention, she outshined all the other girls, even in their group performance.

When they came down from the stage, she walked past him, and she couldn’t help but to look, and still, his eyes were fully on her, and this time she noticed his smile. When the awards were being handed out and Chanyeol’s name was called, his gaze met hers again, and this time, Namjoo could feel herself turn red, and, if you asked her, Namjoo would swear that she saw his ears turn red as well.

When the assembly was over, it was lunch, and in the sea of students trying to make their way out of the hall, Namjoo felt someone grab her hand and pull her back in. As the last of the students squeezed through the exit, Namjoo was almost rammed into the doorway, until someone pulled her back in one swift motion, and when Namjoo opened her eyes again after waiting for some kind of impact to her face, she met the chest of some very tall person. As tilted her head upwards, she saw this person’s features in very slow motion, until she met those eyes again. This time, she was sure, it wasn’t the light that made them shine so bright, they just were. Even with dry lips, Namjoo managed to stutter out a few words. “Y…you…ummm…hi…”

Chanyeol took a small step back from her, but he didn’t let go of her hands. “Namjoo, right? You have a really beautiful voice…and probably the clearest eyes that I have ever seen…” She blushed. His ears turned red. “I couldn’t help but notice – “ He lifted a hand to stop her. “You mean…you couldn’t help but stare?” His grin told her that he was joking, but she continued to play along. “Don’t you mean that you were the one that was staring first?” She expected him to have some comeback, but he didn’t. “Can you blame me, there was this one pretty girl on stage. How could I not stare?” She playfully hit his arm, her face becoming even more red as the conversation went on. “There were like two other girls next to me.”

Chanyeol led her to sit on the stage again. “Really? Like I said, you were the most beautiful one out there. You shine bright like a diamond…” Chanyeol made a weird looking ‘diamond’ shape with his hands in the air, which earned him a nudge from Namjoo. “Rihanna? Really?” He made a funny face. “Just wanted to make you laugh…seems like it worked.”

As they were laughing, they heard a voice from behind the curtains. “Stop flirting. Ask her out. Get a room. Now leave the hall. You know you shouldn’t be in here without any teacher supervision!” Chanyeol gestured with his head to leave and Namjoo slipped her hand into his and they ran out together.

I can’t even turn time back, it’s too late

You are not next to me

Our beautiful story is still in our heart, my love

Looking through a stash of old birthday and Christmas cards, Naeun couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. She looked so happy in all the photographs that she wished she could relive them all over again. When it came to the cards that were at the bottom of the pile, she realised why they were there – they were all from Luhan, her first love. She wondered where he was at that moment; what he was doing; who he was with; and whether he ever thought about her at all, like she was in that moment. Theirs was the typical whirlwind romance. They met, fell in love, but broke up two years later. It was like one of those stories that she used to read in books, except, this one didn’t have that forever as the ending.

Naeun flipped open the first. It was the first birthday that they had celebrated together. She remembered at how her fingers and toes would curl up at even the most simple of messages.

Naeun-ah!

Happy Birthday! This card is only the first of many that you are going to get from me.

I promise, that today will be the best day ever. So, be prepared!

I love you. I’ll see you in about five seconds after you put this card down.

With Love, Han

Naeun remembered how she smile when she read the note, and true to his word, as soon as Naeun put the card down, her bedroom door burst open to reveal a suited-up Luhan holding a bunch of flowers in his hand.

Naeun skipped to the last card in the pile – a Christmas card, the last holiday that they would spend together before they inevitably would break up.

To: Naeun

Merry Christmas. It’s snowing now. I remember when we saw the first snow together, last year.

It’s snowing really hard. Be careful not to get sick, okay?

I’ll see you soon.

From: Luhan

Two weeks after Christmas, in the midst of one of the fiercest storms, Luhan and Naeun were stranded at a café, drinking a cup of coffee after they had decided to break up. When the weather calmed down, they both walked in two different directions. Naeun placed the card back where it was and closed the lid, as someone jumped onto her bed, and then leaned over and gave her a peck on the cheek.

“Hey! You surprised me!” The boy gave her another peck on her other cheek. “Did I? Sorry, I was just excited for our date today.” He leaned over to give her a full kiss on the lips. “Kim Jongin! That was your third! You’re not getting any more today!” He pouted but then diverted his attention to the box that was now closed. “What’s all this?” She lifted the lid to give him a peek and then shut it again. “Don’t expect to get that many cards from me. I prefer to just tell you how I feel.” He made an exaggerated move to place a hand on his heart. “Come on, let’s go.” Naeun took his hand and then led him out of the room.

She would always remember her first love story.

But she started a new one.

And that’s what she was going to focus on.

You came into my heart at one point

And was next to me as a man, not a friend

I hide my heart while you are next to me (hide)

I hide behind the name of a friend

Chorong had this crush on the baby-faced senior at her school. Minseok was fawned all over by the girls, who couldn’t get enough of his cuteness. Apparently, cute was the new y, and Chorong couldn’t help but fall for him. She always went to his soccer games, even if the bleachers were always full, she always managed to get a seat with the help of her friend Joonmyun. Minseok was also their school’s soccer star, the guy that always got the goals in. One time, Chorong was watching their soccer practice while she pretended to do her homework on the field, but she was secretly lifting up her phone and pretending to take a selca while she took pictures of him. On that day, one of the players kicked the ball towards her direction, and when she went to hand the ball back to the player, she saw that it was Minseok. He accepted the ball from her with that smile of his that melted all the girls’ hearts, and their fingertips brushed, Chorong’s breath got hitched in , and just like that, he was gone again. Just like that, Chorong’s moment with her crush was gone, and he was again, unreachable to her.

To Joonmyun, Chorong was attached to his hip, yet she was still unreachable. They had relied on each other ever since starting school, since they were both new at the same time. Joonmyun was quick to develop a crush on his newfound friend, but he never had the courage to admit it to her, and she seemed oblivious to his feelings as well. Whenever they saw each other, she always had this big smile on her face, and he knew that it was because of him. But, as they would be talking, Minseok would walk past, and her eyes would follow him. This made him quite sad, but once Minseok was out of sight, she only looked at him. If he could, Joonmyun would try and find a way so that Chorong would never see Minseok, but that was impossible. One time, he gave her ‘sunglasses’ that were actually had an opaque lens so that she wouldn’t be able to see, but she hit him really hard and he promised never to do it again. He only went to watch the soccer games with her because the seats were all full and Chorong would be squished against his side and he wold have a reason to put his arms around her comfortably without feeling conscious of over-stepping the boundaries of friendship. He was her friend, nonetheless, and he had a feeling that he would always be, but he was happy with that, as long as he got to stay by her side.

Maybe, he thought, once Minseok graduated, she’d see him. She’d see him more like a man, and a little less as a friend. Maybe, she’s realise his feelings too.

I got my, blue skies, brown eyes

Baby, you’re my perfect day

The ringing of the alarm woke Baekhyun up from his sleep. He checked his phone. It was exactly 5.30am. He looked at the sleeping figure beside him and gave her a kiss on the forehead. He made his way out of the tent and saw that it was in fact, still dark outside. He unpacked the gas stove, clicked in the gas can and began to cook a breakfast of eggs and bacon. He plated them up and then went back into the tent, tempting his girlfriend with the scent of her meat. As soon as he put the plate close enough for Eunji to catch a whiff of the food, her eyes fluttered open, she stretched her arms, and without even fully gaining consciousness, she followed the plate to the makeshift table that Baekhyun had set up. “Morning, baby…” Eunji opened and Baekhyun fed her a strip of bacon. “Mmmm….”

Baekhyun took a bite for himself, and then continued to feed Eunji who was slowly opening her eyes more fully. “Eat up. We have to walk for a bit to reach the water and then we can watch the sunrise.” Eunji finished her food at a much faster rate, and the two walked up to the water front. Baekhyun checked his phone and saw 6.02am. Right on schedule, two minutes later, they saw the first rays begin to illuminate the morning. Eunji clapped her hands together. “Wahhh…it’s so pretty…” Baekhyun pulled Eunji in front of him and gave her a hug and whispered into her ear. “I think this is going to be the best day ever…”

Eunji turned her head to get a view of her boyfriend. “Why would you say that?” Baekhyun moved his arms so that it was resting against her shoulder. “Why won’t it be the best day ever? It’s a great start to the morning. I’m quite sure that the rest of the day will be even better if I spend it with you – even if there’s a lot of flies and we both haven’t had a shower since yesterday morning. But you know, we can always jump into the water here…” Eunji shook her head against his chest and Baekhyun chuckled. “Don’t worry, we’ll go home after this. Let’s just enjoy this first. When we get home, we go back to normal life, and we’ll have to wait for a while before we get to have another escape like this.”

“Even if we go back to normal life, you always seem to make every day different.” This time, Baekhyun and Eunji were walking back to where they had set up camp. “I get what you mean. Even if we see each other every day, there’s always something different; something that I learn about you. Like this morning, I learnt that you are a very good sleeper who snores all throughout the night.”

Eunji gave him a slight kick and Baekhyun fell over. This is how Eunji learned that her boyfriend was a puppy, and not the strong macho man that he portrayed himself to be.

Just wow, an incredibly amazing and breath-taking series of oneshots! I really enjoyed how all the stories share the theme of flowers as the little element they have in common. However, each one of them was very unique and beautifully written. Thank you for the great read!
