The Apartment Owner
My Landlady
Krystal took a stroll in her small apartment compound because she just felt like it. The early morning breeze carried with it a refreshing vitality that stirred her just-awakened senses. The place was still eerily quiet. Her eight boarders must still be enjoying a few minutes of leftover slumber. The sun is still preparing to peep out from the far horizon.
She took a deep breath of fresh air and stretched her slender body.
Soon, alarm clocks will start ringing; the smell of freshly-brewed coffee will fill the morning air; doors will be opened and locked once again; the ladies, if they catch her, will bid their good mornings and wave their goodbyes, keyed up to begin another brand new day outside.
Krystal, or Jung Soojung in the Korean registry, is the owner and full-time manager of a ten-unit apartment building. It is a small rental vicinity but it is spic and span, with lush gardens adorning the area, a mini-gym with a swimming pool located in a separate edifice, and a function hall just to the left nearest to the entrance gate. Her home slash office quarters occupies the rightmost portion, apparently in close proximity to Room #10 of the leasing flat, which, by the way, is a horizontal structure at the center of the premises.
The ninth door suddenly opened, and a Chinese-American occupant, who now happens to be one of her closest friends, came out. She was dressed in an all-white scrub with her hair wrapped in a tight bun.
“Good morning, Krystal!”
“You’re early today, Jackie. Had breakfast already?”
Fishing for keys in her shoulder bag in order to lock her unit, the nurse tenant replied, “Oh. Change of duty sched, Krys. I’ll just take my first meal of the day at the hospital canteen.”
“Tsk, tsk. Too bad, the last piece of the chocolate cake I baked yesterday was supposed to be yours. At least the ladies left you a slice. I’ll just have it for myself.”
“Yah! Jung Soojung, leave that heavenly piece for me! Ah, or better give it to my little sis. She’s arriving today, remember? Take care of her, ‘kay? Give that sister of mine her own individual unit. I’m not sharing mine. Haha. I might come home late, by the way.”
“Hmmm. You’re going out on a date with that doctor, aren’t you? It’s your sibling’s first time here in Seoul and you’re not going to welcome her and help her unpack? Aisssh... And no no no to the nth power, she can’t have that cake slice. I just don’t give away my baked goodies to some stranger. She has to earn it.”
“Aissh, stingy Jung... Just give her your warmest, not coldest, welcome, okay? Help her unpack and all. I already gave her all the instructions in order to get here in one piece. She’ll manage. I’m sure the two of you will be good friends just like that!” And she snapped her fingers in the air.
“Alright, alright. Off you go! Can’t wait to meet your sis. I hope she’s nothing like you. Hahaha.”
“Oh, you’re in for a surprise.” Jackie answered with a wink before taking off.
The landlady slowly walked back to her office and sipped a latte nonchalantly on her desk, looking forward to meeting a new boarder and perhaps, a new friend.
