Chapter 1

An Odd Smile

Chapter 1

Your sister’s cries woke you up, “Did you have another nightmare, Ahrin-ah?” She nodded and scooted closer to you. You held her close and hummed a lullaby, trying not to wake your other siblings. You shared a room with your four siblings. All five of you slept on the floor in roll out beds, occasionally cuddling up to one another for warmth or comfort. You slept on the end of the row of beds with your youngest sibling, your little sister Ahrin who was five. Sleeping next to her was the twins, both boys of the age of seven. One was Chungho and the other was Chunghee. Sleeping on the other end was your oldest brother, Junghwa, who was of the ripe old age of twelve.

After a few minutes, your sister’s breathing returned to normal, signaling that she had fallen asleep at last. You closed your eyes, hoping to get a couple more hours of sleep when another voice piped up, “Noona?”

                “Yes, Chunghee-ah?”

                “I’m not Chunghee, I’m Chungho.”

“Alright, what is it, Chungho-ah?” you whispered back. “I’m thirsty,” he whined. “Alright, come on, I’ll get you some water.” You slowly got up and snuck your way into the kitchen. Even with the lights off, you still knew every inch of this apartment. You walked back in and handed the cup to your brother who was now sitting up. “Now go back to sleep,” you cooed. He nodded before lying back down. You snuggled back into your blankets and finally fell back to sleep before Chunghee woke you up for the same request an hour later.

Around seven, you got up and wandered into the kitchen. You pulled out the remaining food stuffs from the fridge and fund out that you had just enough ingredients to make rice porridge. By the time you were half-way done, Junghwa walked into the kitchen, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Do you need any help, Noona?” were the first words out of his mouth.

“You can set the table,” was your reply with a small smile. He was such a good kid, but he worked too hard. He was always asking you if there was anything he could do for you. He was the best brother anyone could ever hope for. He was your saving grace. “Do you know what time Aboji got home last night?” he asked.

“I think around eleven?” He nodded before sitting down at his place on the table. “It’s earlier than normal,” he noted. “That’s a good thing though.”

“It would be better if he got home earlier.”

                “He’s trying.”

“I know I’m just saying…” You walked over to him and kissed his forehead before messing up his bedhead even more. “I know, but maybe things will get easier now that I have a job.”

“Oh right for that random dude with the weird ice cream? You’re going there today?”

“Yes, so I need you to take care of the kids. I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright, they’re not that bad. Plus, maybe Dad will be able to help me today.” The rest of the morning was spent ordering your younger siblings around in order to get them prepared for the day. Your father came out a little while later and helped you a little bit, but he was so tired he could barely function himself.

You told your brother you would pick up some more groceries on your way back home. For lunch, your father was going to buy them premade lunch boxes at the store on the corner. You wore your best shirt and a pair of jeans to your first day at work and even arrived early.

Like the man had said, the ice cream shop wasn’t hard to miss. Outside the store was a bright neon sign advertising the place as “BIGBANG ICE CREAM.” It looked very odd with neon furniture, mostly in pink. There were toys littering the walls on shelves, too high up for a child to reach. In one corner there was a play area, but you had an idea that maybe the owner played there more than any child. The door rang as you walked inside.

“You showed up!” the man exclaimed, wearing a pink apron. “Well I do need a job,” you replied, smiling at him. “Good, good! Well, this is my shop and…” he proceeded with the rundown of the business. It was pretty simple really, but seemed like it would be a lot of fun. “I’m Choi Seunghyun by the way,” he added as almost an afterthought. “_____ (last name) ________,” you replied with a bow.

He smiled before leading back to the front of the house. “So there are four other guys that work here. Their shifts are kind of random, but Daesung is the one who works here the most often. He’ll be training you actually. Jiyong comes in on Fridays. You’ll recognize him by the insane hair and outfit choices. Seungri shows up on the occasional Tuesday, he’s a playboy so I suggest you stay away. He looks like a panda anyways. Then there’s Taeyang, he’s cute but can’t really talk to women. He’s here on Wednesdays and Sundays.”

“Okay, so when should I show up?”

“It depends on how much you want to get paid.”

“I can be here every day except for Sundays.”

“You must really want to get paid.” You smiled and nodded, extra cash would be a lot of help for your family. You’d been forced to quit your last job, so it was a welcome relief to have another. “Okay, so here’s your apron, please keep it somewhat clean,” Seunghun said as he handed you a bright blue apron. You quickly put it on before walking back to the front of the store.

“Daesung-ah!” Seunghyun called. A guy wearing a bright yellow apron turned around, “Yes hyung?” You couldn’t help but stare at him. He wasn’t the typical standard of beauty, but you found him attractive nonetheless. He wore a t-shirt that showed off his muscles and a ripped up pair of jeans. He was too tan to be considered all that handsome and his nose was a little too big, but there was something about him that drew you in. You couldn’t help but be attracted to him, especially when he smiled at you.

His smile was odd. It was odd in the way that it seemed to spread across his entire face, scrunching up his other features in an attempt to make room for it. When looking at his smile, it was almost impossible not to smile, it was so infectious. “This is ______, she’s going to be your new co-worker,” Seunghyun introduced you.

“It’s nice to meet you,” he said with a bow. You returned the gesture, “It’s nice to meet you too. Please be nice to me. This is the first time I’ve worked in an ice cream shop.” He laughed, “Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to take good care of you.”
