Halmeoni
Description
The last thing you'd expect moving from your farm in Jangseong to the city of Busan is making friends with a cute, crinkly grandma who lives next door. And even more so her kind, caring and talented grandson who visits her every week.
Foreword
"Hameoni doesn't feel like cooking lunch today," she said as we trudged back up to her apartment after early morning taichi. "Shall we go out to eat meat?"
Hoya and I nodded enthusiastically. Going out for meat meant no more of halmeoni's Sunday Special breakfast, as she liked to call it, which consisted of pickled cucumber, thousand century egg, spiced eel, rye bread and brown rice that was always undercooked - all of halmeoni's favourite foods, and all of Hoya and I's least favourite foods. But we didn't have the heart to tell her we didn't eat that stuff so instead every Sunday we forced it down while giving each other secret smiles and gag faces, which halmeoni mistook for actions of fatuation when she caught us.
"Three, please!" Halmeoni said to the waitress enthusiastically. "We're here because I can't be bothered to cook! And these two young ones never help me!"
"Aigoo, halmeoni," I said, embarrassed. "I do help you! It's Hoya that watches TV while we're cooking."
"That's true!" She snorted and nudged Hoya, who scratched his head sheepishly. "This boy, aish......"
The waitress smiled. "This way, please."
We followed her through the restaurant.
"Omo, halmeoni, be careful!" Hoya and I both caught halmeoni as she tripped on the step leading to the room we were in.
"Aish, you two, I can walk by myself!"
Hoya and I looked at each other before letting go of her arms. I sighed. Halmeoni was always like this, insisting we didn't need her help when really she did.
"Here, Hana, have some meat," Hoya said as he shovelled some onto my plate while also spooning me some kimchi, rice and salad. "Oh, and have some of this sauce as well."
"Omo have you tried this? It's really good," I said, feeding him some of an unknown side dish that was some kind of purple salad.
"Wow, that's really good! What is it?"
I shrugged. "Dunno. But that's all you're having," I said, pulling the dish away from him. "I found it first! It's mine!"
I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Oh, try this!" He shoved a spoon in my mouth. "Is it good?" I nodded. "Well, you're not having any of this!"
I glared at him.
Halmeoni cleared .
"Excuse me, have you forgotten about me? What about giving me some salad? Meat? Kimchi?" She crossed her arms and pretended to be cross.
I bowed, trying to stifle a laugh. "Sorry, halmeoni. Here." I spooned her a bit of everything. "Let's eat now."
Hoya made a funny sound and I watched him choke on his rice.
"Aigoo, Hoya, have some water." I passed him my glass. Halmeoni glared at me. I could only laugh/.
