Chapter 20

The weight of a decision

You guys... I'm not sure how I managed this either, but here's another update
In case any of you were wondering, this story is now 2/3 of the way through :)

Seungri could feel himself slipping in and out of consciousness. Sometimes there were voices near him, sometimes there weren't, but the pull of sleep was too strong for him to wake up and see what was going on. His bed didn't feel as comfortable as it usually did, but in his sleepy state it was barely a worry.

He rolled over and flopped an arm out, expecting it to - THUMP. He'd expected it to flop over the side of his bed, not hit the back of the - sofa? Why was he on the sofa? He was suddenly very awake, and he sat up. Rubbing his eyes, he took a good look at where he was.

He was back in his own apartment. It felt too quiet compared to the noise that living with five other men caused, and although he supposed he should be glad, he couldn't help but worry. This had been going on for several months, and he still didn't know how this worked. There was no signal to tell him when he was going to be moving between universes, never mind any kind of control over the process.

He slowly began to get up, feeling stiff, as though he had been sleeping for days. He wandered into his bedroom with the intent to change, unsure of what today was supposed to bring - being in another universe for several weeks had made him forget details about what his schedule was supposed to be.

As he went to pull his shirt off, he realised that something was wrong. Hadn't he fallen asleep in his bedroom the last time he was here? So shouldn't he have been in his bed when he woke up just now? Where he fell asleep in the other universe shouldn't affect what happened in this one - or at least, it never had before.

He forgot all about getting dressed, pacing and rubbing the material of his shirt between his thumb and forefinger as he tried to think this through. Was it possible that things were beginning to change? How was this whole thing controlled? Or was he just losing his mind? Was there truly any way that he could prove that this wasn't just a figment of his imagination? After all, dreams always felt real while you were in them.

Staring downwards as he thought, what he was wearing finally registered with him. He had been expecting to be wearing his pyjamas, as he usually was. The only reason he wouldn't have been wearing pyjamas was if he'd... accidentally gone to sleep on the sofa like he had last night...

The clothes he was wearing were definitely not anything he owned in this universe. He distinctly remembered finding them in his wardrobe in the other universe. He stopped pacing. Well, at least that meant that it was all real... Seungri didn't know whether that was a comforting thought or not.

Running a hand through his hair, another thought struck him. Hadn't Jiyong commented on his hair before? The hair colour he'd had done in the other universe? Maybe it wasn't so strange that his clothes had travelled with him after all. He absently wondered what else could cross over, stashing the thought away for later.

He quickly changed his clothes, hiding the ones he had been wearing at the back of his closet. While it was unlikely that anyone would find them, or see their significance if they did, he'd rather not risk having anyone else see them.

Spotting his phone on his bedside table, he went to pick it up, half expecting a weeks' worth of messages to be waiting for him. Instead there was one message from Seunghyun hyung, which he couldn't be bothered to read just yet.

His eyes flicked to look at the time, and did a double take. Not because of the time it was - although it was later in the morning than he would have liked - but because of the date.

Time was something that you never question, you're never shocked to wake up and see that it's the next day, only one number along. Seungri supposed that this had happened while in the other universe, and he hadn't quite realised how much time had passed while he was there. He had vaguely expected the date to be somewhere near the last time he'd seen it, in the middle of June. Instead, it was the end of May still.

It wasn't a huge time skip, but it was enough to make him re-evaluate the severity of what was happening to him. Carefully, he put his phone into his pocket, and tried to not think about it too much.

Wandering back into the living room, he tried to relax, but recent events had him too on edge. He felt as though something was going to happen, despite the fact that he'd only ever travelled between universes in his sleep.

The vibrating of his phone against his leg made him jump. Digging it out of his pocket, he tentatively answered it. "Hello?"

"Where are you?" His manager's panicked voice screeched, "Has your car not turned up?"

"My car? Where am I supposed to be going?" Seungri asked slowly. He couldn't remember any details of his schedule, it could be anything.

His manager made a distressed sounding whimper, and groaned. "Today's schedule? Multiple performances? We talked about this yesterday, Seungri. Do you not remember?"

Yesterday? How long ago was that? "Of course I do," he laughed nervously. "Uh... Yeah, I'll be there soon."

Without bothering to dress any better, he grabbed the essentials - his phone and his keys - and left as soon as possible. If he was already running late, then he couldn't afford to waste any time. When he got down to the garage at the bottom of his building, he got in the car like he normally did, hoping he'd get away with being late - even if he wasn't sure exactly how late he was.

The driver said nothing, and Seungri gratefully took the time to process being back in this universe. Seungri pulled his phone out of his pocket and just stared at it for a few minutes, revelling in having it back.

Caught up in his thoughts - and being tired - Seungri was at the venue faster than he had anticipated. He supposed that travelling between universes while you slept wouldn't be the best way to get a good night's sleep.

He walked as quickly as he could to the dressing room the others were in - he couldn't even begin to imagine how angry Jiyong was going to be at him. Their perfectionist leader would have them all at any venue at least three hours before the event would be due to start, if he had it his way.

Tentatively opening the door, Seungri poked his head around to gauge what it was like in there. All seemed calm, so he bravely opened the door slightly more, and slipped inside. Seunghyun and Daesung were sat on a sofa talking, with Youngbae sat across from them playing on his phone. Jiyong was nowhere to be seen, and it put Seungri on edge. He quickly made his way to the seats by the make up artists, and let them begin to work their magic. Maybe if he was busy with this Jiyong would let him off unscathed?

When Jiyong still hadn't appeared after a few minutes, Seungri began to relax more, and closed his eyes. The gentle feel of the make up being applied, combined with his already tired state, began to lull him into a doze, and the sounds of talking began to fade away.

That is, until Jiyong's voice sounded loud in his ear, startling him out of his nap with a jump. "Just what did you think you were doing, coming in so late?"

"I'm sorry!" Was the first thing that came out of Seungri's mouth. It was such a instinctual response, and Seungri was unsure what he was apologising for - was it for being late, or for being disrespectful to a version of Jiyong in another universe.

Jiyong seemed taken aback, but still irritated. "You should have been here long ago, Seungri. You've been so forgetful recently. What's going on?"

His make up seemed to be finished, and so he took the opportunity to stand up to face Jiyong properly. He could try to explain, but Jiyong's reaction to his latest 'obsession' hadn't been favourable so far, so that option was out. He wanted to keep Jiyong from being mad at him, but he also couldn't say anything that would explain it to him either. So he went for his underhand tactic.

Seungri stepped forward and pulled Jiyong into a hug. He'd missed this - as much as he enjoyed being with his SHINee members, he had missed the comfort that came from a ten year long friendship.

Jiyong seemed to be trying to resist the hug, but from experience Seungri knew that he needed to be persistent. He hugged harder, laughing, and Jiyong soon returned it. "Alright, you're forgiven, but don't do it again," Jiyong warned. Seungri nodded, grinning, relived that he'd escaped punishment and possible embarrassment.

It hardly felt as though Seungri had spent any time away from the others - it wasn't like he'd not spent time away from them before, but he'd always had the ability to contact them while on holiday, if he'd chosen to. Being in another universe kinda prevented that from being an option. Despite it being nearly three weeks since he'd had any contact with them, it felt like yesterday since he'd seen them - perhaps because for them, that time hadn't passed.

Since he'd arrived so late, it wasn't long until it was time for them to go onstage. For some reason that Seungri couldn't pinpoint, he almost felt uncomfortable going onstage with the rest of Bigbang. Despite the fact that it had only been a few weeks, it felt different somehow to be going onstage with them.

Out of habit, he found himself sticking more to the prescribed choreography during their performance. It was something he'd picked up during his time in the other universe, where diverging from the choreography was very much frowned upon. It didn't stop the fans from enjoying watching them though, their screaming seemed undiminished due to it.

As they walked away from the stage, Daesung happily chatted to him. None of the members seemed to have noticed that he had done anything different; they were probably used to him acting strangely.

Seungri tried to pay attention to what Daesung was saying to him, but he found himself to be distracted with the memories of his meeting with Daesung in the other universe. It was so nice to be around a version that knew him well, and yet he couldn't help but see Daesung through the eyes of his other universe counterpart - seeing what his fangirls saw, his good looks.

He was so lost in his thoughts, he nearly didn't notice Taemin standing in front of him. He looked happy, relaxed, but seeing him only served to make him remember what had happened the day before. Seungri couldn't bring himself to smile back, too lost was he in his contemplation of Taemin's confession.

"Hi hyung!" Taemin said cheerfully. His manner reminded him so much of the Taemin that he knew better that for a split second he forgot which universe he was in and was unsure how he should respond.

"Um... hi."

Jonghyun came to greet Seungri too. "How have you been, Seungri?" It still sounded weird to be called Seungri rather than Seunghyun by Jonghyun.

"I've been... okay, thank you. Now if you'll excuse me..." Seungri pushed his way between them and walked away as quickly as he could. After what had happened the last time he'd seen Jonghyun and Taemin - or at least, versions of them - he couldn't face them just yet.

He could hear footsteps coming up behind him, and he hoped it wasn't either of them coming to ask what had happened. Feeling an arm being thrown around his shoulders, he looked to see Jiyong beside him. He wasn't sure whether that was better than having Jonghyun and Taemin catch up with him.

Jiyong frowned. "What was that?"

"What was what, hyung?" Seungri's response made Jiyong roll his eyes.

"You know what I'm talking about. You've been so enthusiastic about becoming friends with them in these past few weeks, and now you hardly want to talk to them at all?"

Seungri shook his head. "No, I..."

"Something has to have changed, Seungri. What's up?" Youngbae chimed in.

"Nothing's wrong, I swear," Seungri said, before walking away. There was no way he could explain why talking to the members of SHINee didn't feel the same any more. Perhaps it would later, but for now things had changed.

Chapter 31: Wow it's so strange reading about other Seunghyun than Seungri, but I kind of like it. It brings insight to what happened to Seunghyun that whole time during the universe swap. Jonghyun should known soon that his Seunghyun is back.

I'm sad that the end has come, but thank you so much for writing such a wonderful story. It was quite a journey, and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Chapter 31: So does that mean Seunghyun didn't have the same experience as Seungri had??? Omg

I feel so giddy. Reading about Seunghyun is a bit weird, but then I remember that he isn't Seungri and it becomes refreshing. I have a feeling Jonghyun would know eventually though.

It's been amazing. I mean, just the concept and the possibilities really brought me in. Thank you so much! I'm really glad that I perused the Seungri tag one day and found this. Thank you! :)
