Chapter 15

The weight of a decision

Seungri sat on the sofa next to Taemin. The TV was playing in front of them, which Seungri was vaguely paying attention to while Taemin clicked around on his laptop. They'd been sat like that in comfortable silence for a good few hours, and for once Seungri didn't feel the need to be filling that silence with anything. They'd even stayed sat when Jinki and Minho had announced that they were going shopping, and asked whether they'd like to join them. While Seungri would usually be more than up for going out rather than staying in, this was more fun.

Hearing Taemin sniggering, Seungri lazily turned to look at whatever was so funny. It was a video of Starshine, Daesung and Hyunseung's duo, singing a ballad on a chart show. The fans in the audience seemed to be loving it, as they were screaming the fanchant loudly over the song. Seungri looked at Taemin confusedly. "What's so funny?" The performance was good, but Seungri wouldn't necessarily have described it as amusing.

"Well I would have thought you'd be paying more attention to this. It's your favourite Starshine song, isn't it?" While it was Seungri's first instinct to question that statement, or deny it altogether, weeks of practice kept him from showing his confusion. "Oh.... yeah... I do like that song..." Seungri wondered whether his acting was convincing Taemin, given that this was the first time that he'd ever heard the song.

"It's funny how... Seungri can sing so soulfully, but also to be able to be ridiculous. Like when he sings trot songs," Seungri remarked. Taemin looked curious. "Really? I've never heard him sing trot. All Starshine seem to do are ballads, love songs." Seungri nodded non-committally. If Daesung's trot songs didn't exist here, he wasn't going to push the issue.

Once the video was done, Taemin clicked on another one, this time just of Daesung, a music video. It was more upbeat than the previous one, and, listening to the lyrics, Seungri thought that he could hear Jiyong's style in there. It reminded him a lot of one of Daesung's Japanese releases, Shut Up, and it was odd to be hear it being sung in Korean.

He found himself fascinated by the video, observing the differences between this man, and his friend. There didn't seem to be many, as far as you could tell from a music video - he looked much the same, but Seungri noticed a scar on his hand that he'd definitely not seen before, and he hadn't seemed to be as lively as he usually was during the performance he'd seen before this video.

Even though Seungri had done some research on the lives of his other members in this world, he hadn't exactly been able to comprehensively listen to everything that they'd put out in the last ten years. This was clearly a song he'd missed the last time he searched for Daesung's work in this world, and he wished he had discovered it earlier - it was good.

It was only when he looked up as the music video finished that he noticed that Taemin was grinning at him. "What?" He asked. There was another voice from behind them. "Yeah, what's so funny, Taemin?" Seungri looked up to see Jonghyun leaning over the back of the sofa to see the screen of Taemin's laptop. This only caused Taemin to smirk more.

"Jonghyun hyung, you should have seen Seunghyun hyung watching this Seungri video just now. He couldn't take his eyes off him!" This made Jonghyun laugh, and Seungri blush slightly. In his curiosity, he'd forgotten that 'Seunghyun' was supposed to have a crush on Daesung here, and him intently watching a video of Daesung must have looked suspiciously like he was entertaining that crush.

"Ah... no, I was just... really enjoying the music, I swear!" Seungri tried to defend himself. After all, it was weird for him to be told that that he supposedly had a crush on someone he'd thought of as a brother for the past ten years. This only made Jonghyun and Taemin laugh more. "No, really, I wasn't sure whether I'd heard that particular song before, so I was listening to it very carefully! I hardly even noticed that it was D - Seungri singing it!"

Jonghyun patted his shoulder. "Sure you didn't, Seunghyun. It's not like we've had to listen to you raving about his hair, and his lips, and pretty much everything about him many times." This made Taemin laugh very hard, and Seungri found himself playfully pouting, knowing that he wouldn't be able to convince them of his innocence.

Seungri settled back into watching what was playing on TV - an old episode of running man, by the looks of it, and Taemin went back to finding more things on the internet. Jonghyun came round the sofa and sat on the other side of Taemin, and watched the TV with Seungri. They sat in silence again for a while, until Taemin made a small noise of excitement.

Both Jonghyun and Seungri turned to Taemin at the same time, looking to find out what was so important. "You know Youngbae, right?" Seungri nodded, wondering where this was going. "Well, YG has just released a collaboration single with him and Hyunseung from Starshine. That's so cool!" Jonghyun raised his eyebrows. "Well put it on then, let's hear it."

After a minute of searching, Taemin managed to find the music video, which already had a million views. Seungri found himself impressed by it - both Hyunseung and Youngbae sang well in it, and the video itself was imaginative. When it was over, Seungri nodded. "That was good, I liked it."

Looking at Taemin and Jonghyun, however, they seemed more shocked than impressed. "I didn't know that Youngbae could sing!" Taemin exclaimed. Jonghyun nodded in agreement, but this only made Seungri more confused.

"What do you mean? Youngbae has always been a great singer," Seungri said, "have you not heard him before?" Jonghyun looked confused this time. "No, I'm a big gdyb fan, but I've only ever heard Youngbae rap. I thought I'd heard all of their songs... how could you have heard him sing?"

Seungri was stumped. "Uuuh... I watched a video of them pre-debut, with Youngbae singing... I don't remember where I saw it though." This didn't seem to have put Jonghyun off, as he went on to ask more about it. "Really? I don't remember even hearing anything about something like that... Are you sure you don't remember where you saw it? I'd really like to see it, since Youngbae clearly has a lot of singing talent in addition to his rapping."

Seungri began to shake his head, realising the hole he'd dug himself. For once, he hadn't made Jonghyun think that he was crazy, but he had invented an imaginary video that he could provide no proof of. "I don't remember where it was, and... even if I could, it was a few years ago, it's probably been taken down by now."

Seungri thought that he'd probably convinced Jonghyun, but he then noticed the reason Taemin had been so quiet during their exchange. He was searching for 'Youngbae singing pre-debut' on YouTube. Seungri almost hoped that there would be results, so that he wouldn't look like he was lying. It didn't look as though there were any results though, all that he was finding was videos from a live performance of Youngbae and Hyunseung's new song.

Taemin pouted. "I guess you just won't be able to watch it after all," Seungri said, "But I always thought Youngbae seemed like he'd be able to sing well." Jonghyun seemed surprised. "Really? Youngbae always seemed too much like a rapper to me, with his and G-Dragon's style." Seungri snorted, shaking his head when Jonghyun was curious as to why. The amount of rapping that the Youngbae he knew did was minimal, unless while he was drunk counted.

Most of the time that Seungri spent that day had been along similar lines. He enjoyed the company of s in this world immensely, finding them fun to be with. Jonghyun seemed to have finally got off his back about thinking that something was up with him if he made a mistake about the details of this world.

Just this morning when he'd woken up, he'd greeted Taemin as though he hadn't seen him in a week - which of course was the case for Seungri, but as far as Taemin was concerned, they'd seen each other the day before.

Seungri had realised just how much he'd missed the Taemin that he knew better until Taemin had reciprocated his hug with enthusiasm. As much as he'd enjoyed getting to know the Taemin from his own world, he'd been much more distant, less happy to spend time with Seungri. This one was so different from the other one, even with people that he didn't know, that Seungri wondered what could have caused such a large difference in attitude in the same person.

It had even been nice to see Kibum be more comfortable around him. Clearly they had been affected by years of being around Seungri and were significantly more comfortable around him in this universe. Even Kibum's playful smack around the head when Seungri tried to steal some of his toast in the morning was better than the nervous reception he'd had in their dressing room just a week ago.

Taemin continued to surf the internet while they continued to be lazy. Kibum came through from his room at some point, and began rattling around with the kettle in the kitchen. Seungri began to feel deja vu settling in.

Occasionally Taemin would make some reaction noise to what he was looking at, and Seungri might or might not ask what he'd seen. After a good twenty minutes, Taemin snorted. "Can you believe this?" He asked, turning his laptop to face Seungri. "Some nut job has made the news by claiming that he's come from a parallel universe. Crazy, right?"

Seungri could do nothing but nod and hope he didn't accidentally give anything away. From his experience trying to tell them before, there was no way he could segue this into telling them that he was from one too.

From the other side of Taemin, Jonghyun also snorted. "People like that are so messed up. Parallel universes are so obviously not real, why would you even believe that? He's probably just looking for attention." At this, Seungri couldn't help but let out a nervous laugh. This was so far from the conversation he'd had with the Jonghyun from his world just the other day, it couldn't have been more different.

Taemin rolled his eyes. "We all know how you feel about it, don't worry hyung. Seunghyun and I have heard you talking about it enough." Kibum finally came through from the kitchen, sipping on the tea he'd made. He clapped Jonghyun on the shoulder with a wry smile on his face. "We know you don't like them, you don't have to tell us again," he said.

Seungri nodded along dumbly. The differences between this universe and his own were really becoming apparent. Just the day before, he'd spoken to a Jonghyun who was very passionate about his love for parallel universes. They'd bonded over it. Now he was faced with a copy of the same person who was adamant that they thought the idea was stupid. Seungri watched as Jonghyun continued to monologue to Kibum about all the reasons that parallel universes couldn't possibly exist, despite Kibum clearly having heard all this before.

While it was unnerving to see the same people saying very different things in the bigger picture, in the moment Seungri couldn't help but feel a rush of affection watching his friends play around with each other. Kibum playfully hitting Jonghyun, trying to get him to stop talking. Jonghyun trying to defend himself, giving up when Taemin joined the attack, tickling him mercilessly.

Taemin looked up from where he was hunched over Jonghyun. He nodded his head towards Jonghyun, wordlessly asking Seungri to join in. While this was a situation Seungri was most used to having with his Bigbang members, at this moment he wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. And so join in he did.

Chapter 31: Wow it's so strange reading about other Seunghyun than Seungri, but I kind of like it. It brings insight to what happened to Seunghyun that whole time during the universe swap. Jonghyun should known soon that his Seunghyun is back.

I'm sad that the end has come, but thank you so much for writing such a wonderful story. It was quite a journey, and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Chapter 31: So does that mean Seunghyun didn't have the same experience as Seungri had??? Omg

I feel so giddy. Reading about Seunghyun is a bit weird, but then I remember that he isn't Seungri and it becomes refreshing. I have a feeling Jonghyun would know eventually though.

It's been amazing. I mean, just the concept and the possibilities really brought me in. Thank you so much! I'm really glad that I perused the Seungri tag one day and found this. Thank you! :)
