We Did It

Polar.

" me!" Mingyu said, defeated.

"Okay." Wonwoo replied.

Mingyu, Minghao and Jun all looked at him in slight disgust and disbelief, Jun even shaking his head a bit, disappointed

"What! He says stuff like that all the time!" Wonwoo said, defensively while pointing an accusing finger at his boyfriend

"Yeah, but that's my thing.." Mingyu said and Wonwoo groaned at his friends' reactions

"Plus, we all know I would top."

Wonwoo shot a glare at his boyfriend.

"You-"

"Okay!" Minghao yelled before the couple could discuss the topic any further,

"Just focus on studying, Mingyu-ah" he continued.

It was currently their study period, and Mingyu was stressing about University and college entrance exams. It's not that he wasn't smart, he was actually quite intelligent but he couldn't care less about the subjects aside from Science. Plus, although he picked up his ranks in terms of the grade, his overall average was still quite low due to his minimal effort in the previous years.

"If only you started dating sooner," Minghao said, while shaking his head as if it were a shame.

Mingyu looked up with furrowed brows,

"Oh, c'mon. Wonwoo's the reason you actually started trying in school,"

Mingyu took Minghao into a headlock and started ruffling his hair,

"Ow- dude, everyone knows! Plus you're already dating-"

"It's still embarrassing!" Mingyu said, his cheeks flushing pink, earning a satisfied chuckle from Wonwoo.

Minghao managed to slip out of the headlock, and then started fixing his hair, mumbling something about Mingyu under his breath. Jun, chuckling, helped his boyfriend return his hair to its original state, with caring hands.

"You're so lame," Wonwoo said what Minghao was thinking.

Mingyu sat back down,

"Whatever Mr. Failed pick up Line,"

Wonwoo got up then tilted his head as a dangerously cute smile appeared on his mouth.

"We'll see who'll be failing." he said as he cutely poked the textbooks spread out on Mingyu's desk.

Wonwoo walked away, a triumphant, smug look on his face as he did so.

Mingyu violently ruffled his hair, a sigh of defeat coming from his mouth as he slammed his head down on the desk, the thick pages of the textbook cushioning the impact.

Jun and Minghao laughed along wiith each other as they walked away, leaving Mingyu to actually focus on his studies.

It's not that they didn't want to help him. It's just that they all knew that he was fully capable of doing this by himself, and maybe some alone time and privacy is what was needed to get him to focus and face the reality of his future.

Mingyu had already made up his mind, he was fully devoted and determined to become a professor who majored in Astronomy, and also wanted to go in depth about Astrology. He didn't really enjoy kids, so he wanted to try his best and become a professor who taught at colleges or Universities. Wonwoo, however was still at a loss of what to do with his life. So, he decided that he would take a year off and hopefully within those 12 months, find a passion that he would gladly pursue as a occupation.

The boys were at the base, excluding Wonwoo and Jun, it was the usual group.

The boys were all in the same year, yet they all went to different highschools. Therefore, all their graduations were on different dates, thankfully. They all made the promise to attend each and everyone's graduation. Even Mingyu's.

"So, are you guys coming?" Mingyu asked

"Ofcourse we are! Why would we miss our leader's graduation" Seungcheol said as he slung a playful arm around Mingyu's neck, who was smiling.

"Are you sure you're graduating though?" Jihoon asked, bluntly

"Yeah, honestly, we didn't think you would graduate..." LeeChan said, truthfully. Mingyu just laughed and said,

"Aw, c'mon, you're joking right?" he looked around the room, and the boys all looked at him nodding their heeads in agreement to the previous words.

"Wait- seriously?" Mingyu stopped laughing,

"You guys didn't think I would graduate?!" he asked, offended.

The boys started laughing instead, their leader's reaction amusing.

"Yah, that's why~" Jeonghan began,

"We're going to go see you get that diploma with our very eyes." he finished as he slung a playful arm around Mingyu's neck. Mingyu immediately brushed it off and stood up, and pointed an accusing finger to the boys,

"I can't believe you guys thought I wouldn't graduate!"

He was clearly offended.

"Yah, you've always been the bottom of your class!" Minghao argued,

"You only started trying recently. All thanks to your Class President of a boyfriend,"

"So- what? Did you guys just assume I would stay back a year?!" Mingyu asked.

"Well.. yeah." Jihoon replied.

"And don't speak too soon, you haven't graduated yet!" he continued.

Mingyu sat back down, defeated, and he remembered his overall average was just barely acceptable to get a diploma at the end of this month. He groaned and wanted to punch his brothers as he heard their amused laughter.

At the Jeon house, they were getting ready for Dinner and Narin was the last to sit at the table that was set by Wonwoo. After a quick thanks for the meal, they began eating.

"So, Wonwoo, honey. When's your graduation?"

"In 2 weeks, thankfully on a Friday," he answered as he took a bite of rice.

"Ah..." Narin said,

"So..." Narin continued, nudging her son.

"Are you Valedictorian?" she said.

"Nope," Wonwoo blantly denied.

"What? But you're top of the class," Minsung said,

"But I'm not Valedictorian," Wonwoo replied with a playful wink at his dad.

"Really?" Narin asked, sincerely shocked that her son wasn't the Valedictorian.

"Yup. Sorry guys," the boy apologized, "I'm not Valed." he denied.

The rest of their dinner continued on with them discussing preperations for their son's big day. They suggested that he wear an all black suit, with a royal blue tie. The boy replied that he would talk to Mingyu to coordinate their outfits.

Meanwhile, Mingyu was studying, absolutely determined to gain back credits essential to receiving his diploma in 2 weeks. While Mingyu continued studying during their lunch break, he asked his boyfriend,

"Babe, are you Valed?" the taller asked with his chin in the palm of his hand.

"Ofcourse he is, who else-" Minghao began,

"Nope." Wonwoo denied.

Minghao, Jun and Mingyu looked up at Wonwoo who just continued eating.

"Why does everyone assume it's me, anyway?"

"What the Hell? Who is it then?" Mingyu asked,

"Not me." his boyfriend's replied with a sly wink.

"Jesus, you're annoying,"

"I think Jesus is wonderful, I don't find him annoying at all," Wonwoo continued his stupid comebacks,

"I swear to God if you say one more smartass comebacks, I'm gonna-"

"So! Who do you think it is?" Jun interrupted Mingyu's words beofre he got to finish the threat to his boyfriend.

"I don't know, but I'm kind of disappointed to be honest..." Wonwoo said,

"I wanted that award." he continued, slightly sad.

Jun eyed his bestfriend suspiciously,

"You swear it's not you?"

"It's not me, I swear! I would've told you guys by now." Wonwoo profusely denied.

As the days continued on, Mingyu continuously studied, and Wonwoo felt slightly lonely, but was also proud that his boyfriend was trying really hard. His boyfriend also spent a lot of their Lunch break in the staff room, saying that he was trying to find out his averages in subjects that he needed to improve. He was also coordinating with certain teachers and discussing with them which path would be beneficial to Mingyu in the future. Wonwoo felt a little more proud and happy when Mingyu talked to him with excitement and anticipation as he talked about Graduation, and the way his face lit up when he told the Class President about his grades improving.

The days dragged on, and the work done in class started decreasing. As the heat of the approaching Summer took over, and students began wearing their summer uniforms, the graduating students started to feel the reality of the time. Especially one day, when Graduation photos were being taken for the yearbook. By now, Mingyu had already secured the credits and he was set to graduate, which he thoroughly bragged about to the boys who doubted him. On this day, all students in their final year were told to come to school with a white dress shirt with collars, as that would be the only thing that showed underneath the gown. Mingyu came to school in the proper attire, tucked into the grey uniform pants, and didn't bother to wear a jacket. Wonwoo, however, wore a big sweater over it and refused to take it off until they were in line to actually take the photos.

When it was Mingyu's turn to take the photo, he sat down at the stool after putting on the black gown lined with red near the collar. He made sure that his white collars were exposed, and as he put on the hat, he couldn't help but already smile. When he took the red roses and diploma into his hand, all he thought of was his mom.

He pictured her looking down on him at this very moment. Fulfilling his promise to her. Making her proud.

With these thoughts, his smile naturally came, and the happiness was evident on his face. His eyes were practically closed, forming content crescents as his wide grin stretched from ear to ear.

"3, 2, 1," the camerawoman counted down,

And right when the camera flashed, Mingyu's body decided to betray him.

Achoo!

The picture was hilarious, and had Wonwoo gasping for air as it displayed on the computer screen beside the camerawoman.

"," Mingyu swore under his breath, "I-I'm sorry, can I take another one?" he asked, politely, as his cheeks grew rosey with embarrassment.

The photographer laughed causing Mingyu to feel even more embarrassed, but she happily said "Yeah, sure."

Another countdown initiated, and this time Mingyu successfully got his graduation photo taken. As they were walking back to class, Wonwoo kept teasing his boyfriend, faking sneezes like there was no tomorrow. He was gripping his stomach in laugher, as Mingyu walked with an unsastisfied face.

"It's hilarious to you, huh?" he said,

"Hell yes." Wonwoo answered as he continued laughing.

Mingyu sighed and just walked faster, leaving his hysterical boyfriend behind.

"Awe, c'mon, babe!" Wonwoo whined, "Come back," he said as he took Mingyu by his wrist. Mingyu turned around,

"You know I love you~" Wonwoo said as he tip-toed and was going to plant a kiss on Mingyu's lips when Mingyu decided to have a little revenge.

Achoo!

Wonwoo's eyes shot open, to see a snickering Mingyu,

"Babe, what the Hell! You're disgusting!" he yelled,

Mingyu laughed as he began running away,

"Not so hilarious anymore, is it?" he said

"You're so gross- You sprayed me in my face, oh my God!" he yelled.

"Yah, Kim Mingyu! I'm gonna kill you!" he warned as he began running after his boyfriend, after wiping his face with his sleeves in disgust.

"It was fake!~" Mingyu reasoned, but continued running and laughing as he heard angry quick footsteps coming after him.

As their big day was drawing closer, the graduating students started feeling the reality of the current moment. As each day went by, there was more talk of post highschool education and activities than there was about completely homework. The discussion of who would get certain awards replaced the usual conversation about ranks on tests. Complaints about trip fees were, in its stead, complaints about tuition and dorm accommodations. And it was all a new, exciting yet scary transition into real life. The usual 'hang out' nights for groups of friends would be replaced with shifts of work to pay for their education. And yet despite being scary, all the graduates couldn't help but smile on their big day.

June 28th. A beautiful day, the skies were clear and the sun beamed down upon a banquet hall where around 300 students were transforming into independent, young men and women. Wonwoo was standing with his parents outside of the hall, as there was still quite some time before the actual ceremony started. He was wearing a suit, his black hair slicked up, and he looked similar as he did at Prom. Along with his parents were other very close relatives that he invited to watch him graduate. He was scanning the crowd for Mingyu, when he heard multiple gasps and whispers, and looked to their direction. Sure enough, there was his boyfriend, looking dashing in a suit, but he figured the main reason for the commotion were the 10 other boys behind him. Each of them in suits, and the sunlight beamed down on them, highlighting their already attractive features, making them appear as Gods.

"You would've never thought that they're a famous gang on the streets..." Jun said, and Wonwoo turned to see his bestfriend in a beautiful suit. Wonwoo smiled and then proceeded to greet Jun and his parents, who were like his own.

Meanwhile, Mingyu was trying to get his friends through the crowd, but it was kind of difficult due to the fact that they were surrounded by curious and flirtatious girls.

"Awe, you brought your little brother along?" a girl said, referring to Jihoon who appeared even shorter, since she was in heels.

Mingyu covered his mouth, trying to hold back the laughter, but exploded when the girl pinched Jihoon's marshmallow cheeks and said,

"He's so cute!~"

"Oh, is he skipping? Elementaries have school today..."

Jihoon gave Mingyu a death glare, and the leader just mouthed the word

Sorry!

Mingyu left the boys to the mercy of girls, knowing that they'll shake them off, somehow. As girls cooed over the cute Jihoon, and others approached the rest of the boys, Mingyu dispatched to go find the one person that really mattered to him. Minghao did the same, going to find Jun. Minghao and Mingyu ended up at the same place, and proceeded to greet their boyfriend's parents, whom they've already met.

"Mingyu-ah! You're so handsome, can you give a little to Wonwoo?" Narin joked as she gave Mingyu a loving kiss on the cheek.

"Thanks, mom." Wonwoo said "Love you, too.", his voice dripping with sarcasm and unamusement.

"I can't, he's got it all. I should atleast look like this if I'm going to be dating such an amazing person,"

Mingyu made up for Narin's teasing as he kissed Wonwoo on the cheek, and gave him flowers. Although Mingyu has done this many times, Wonwoo still smiles and still gets that feeling of butterflies in his stomach.

After exchanging their greetings, their Principal emerged from the banquet hall and asked that all students enter to put on the gowns, and the parents will be invited inside, shortly. Wonwoo gave the flowers from Mingyu to his mom, and said a quick 'see you', before intertwining his hand with Mingyu's to put on their gowns. After their gowns and hats were on, they were then called to the main room. When the students entered, they were greeted with a roar of cheers and applause. Wonwoo couldn't help but smile, and for some reason had tears swelling up in his eyes. They took their seats infront of the parents, and the student body was quiet.

They sat in excited silence as the ceremony began. Wonwoo doesn't recall much of it, mainly teachers going up to say words about the supposedly 'amazing students who they were lucky to have taught', and other things that were a blur to Wonwoo.

Until the Award Ceremony started. Multiple students were called up and awarded for their efforts throughout their entire high school journey. Sports teams, extracurricular, leadership skills, academic subjects. All of these were also slightly blurred to the Class President. Until a certain recipient was called.

"The Science Award." and Wonwoo looked up, as this had piqued his interest,

"This student has demonstrated extensive knowledge and consistent effort in various areas of Science. This student has been very passionate, and we hope that their passion may follow them in the future," the teacher gave a brief foreword before calling up the student,

"Kim Mingyu."

The crowd was silent and Wonwoo froze slightly. He looked slightly to his right to see his boyfriend getting up to receive the award, shock written on his face, and hesitation in his steps towards the stage. The surprised silence was broken by 10 boys, whose screams and cheers resounded in the main room. However, their cheers caused the crowd to clap themselves, as Mingyu received several cheers and got up to receive the award.

He was allowed a few words, and with the plaque in his hand, representing his achievement in his favourite subject, he spoke into the mic,

"I would like to thank a certain boy, for finding me on a hill when I was 12 years old, staring up at stars and asking me if they had names." he said, and the crowd exchanged glances in confusion.

Only a few people would know what he was talking about. Wonwoo was definitely one of those few, and he clapped with a sad smile as the same smile appeared on his boyfriend's face,

"Seokmin, Mom, and Wonwoo!" Mingyu continued, "this one's for you," he said as he held up the plaque, his smile almost blinding.

A couple of more awards went by, but once again Wonwoo didn't really pay attention. He was too nervous for what was to come next.

"And now, we'd like to call upon our graduating class' Valedictorian," Wonwoo looked up.

Murmurs in the crowd started back up, wondering who it would be,

"Jeon Wonwoo" the man said

Wonwoo got up from his seat with a smile, and made his way to the stage. He got up to the podium and wanted to start laughing at the shock and betrayal on Mingyu's face, and even on his parents'.

He cleared his throat before saying,

"Hello, fellow graduating students..." He started off, awkwardly, "It's your Class President, who is now your Valedictorian." he continued, and smiled himself when he saw smiles in the crowd.

"I've put up a pretty good act right?" he chuckled, "Sorry, mom, dad, and friends... I wanted to surprise you!" Wonwoo continued happily.

He cleared his throat again before proceeding to recite a speech he had written beforehand,

"We did it." he started,

"4 years of staying up past midnight to finish assignments we've procrastinated on. 4 years of dealing with teachers we loved, and some that we could've done without..." he said honestly, earning a laugh from the student body who related to them.

"We went into that foreign building at 14. Unaware of what the future had to hold. Feared if we would really graduate..." he sighed and with a smile he continued,

"But we're here now." his fellow students smiled back, "Each and everyone of you here, sitting in this gown and hat... Congratulations! You've endured all the things that 4 years had to bring. Endured heart breaks, drama, teachers piling up the assignments. Some of us had to do all of that while also keeping up a part-time or even full-time job. And within these 4 years, you had all the chances to drop out.

But you didn't."

Wonwoo's graduating speech went on for a good 10 minutes. He didn't realize it but, he himself started crying as he thought about all the memories and it didn't help that some students in the crowd were crying.

Mostly the girls.

After a moving, yet humorous speech Wonwoo stepped down from the podium, but not before saying.

"Congratulations graduating students of 2016! We did it!" he said and threw a fist in the air as a huge grin spread across his face.

He received a roar of applause and even a standing ovation from the students, as he made his way back to the seats.

After receiving their diplomas, the students were invited outside for the typical throwing of their hats. The parents followed, wanting to take pictures of their sons and daughters. When they got out, Mingyu immediately found Wonwoo and held him by his waist and drew him closer,

"Hi, Mr. Valedictorian," his low voice said.

"Hi, Mr. Science Award," Wonwoo replied with a smile.

They stared into each other's eyes for a while as Mingyu brought Wonwoo's face closer so that their foreheads were touching.

"We did it," he whispered with a sincere smile.

Then the countdown began and Mingyu took his cap in his hand as Wonwoo did the same. When the countdown hit 0, they threw their graduation caps up with a cheer. And within that moment, Narin snapped a beautiful picture.

Mingyu was holding Wonwoo's chin, tilting it a bit upwards, as Wonwoo held the back of his boyfriend's neck. They were kissing in the picture, their eyes closed, yet formed happy crescents,, the focus on the couple as the background was a beautiful scene of students in their gowns, and their graduation caps in the air. The happiness emitting from the picture was enough to make Narin tear up, and even Minsung when she showed him.

"Our son," Minsung said as he placed an hand on Narin's waist,

"He's done well, hasn't he?"

Narin looked at her son, beaming with happiness as he hugged Mingyu.

"Ofcourse, he has.." she said as she hugged her husband.

After the ceremony, Wonwoo agreed to join Mingyu and the boys at the base for some junk food is celebration. In return, Mingyu accepted the invitation for dinner with the Jeon family the next day, as their congratulatory meal.

The base was full with young men in suits, pizza boxes and bags of chips as well as bottles of soda spread out everywhere. Yet, Wonwoo felt comfortable. He enjoyed the company of his boyfriend, and the people that he calls brothers. Minghao and Jun were present, ofcourse. Everyone was talking to each other, not allowing anyone to remain quiet and eat in peace.

Suddenly, Mingyu stood up and had a red solo cup in his hand, filled with soda.

"I would like to make a toast!" he said proudly, "To my smartass boyfriend who stood up on the podium as Valedictorian. And to all of us who graduated!" he said with a smile, the boys brought up their cups and yelled and cheered as they toasted.

Seungcheol brought his cup up,

"To the future!"

Minghao also brought up his cup,

"To our leader who actually managed to get past highschool!" he cheered, and the boys cheered with him.

Mingyu didn't find it amusing.

He threw his soda on the boy, and thus outbroke a huge food fight. Pizza, and soda ruining their suits. Their laughter filled the room, as food went flying in different directions, landing on the boys. The fight ruined their suits, but they didn't care.

They graduated that's all that mattered.

Chapter 36: Hai Zen! I spent a few days to finish this story. And I realllyyyyy love this!!! How the story goes sweetly, then comes the problem that makes me a little scared when Mingyu fights. I like the portrayal of Wonwoo's character. It doesn't feel forced, just flows naturally. And I'm reading this in 2022 which made it easy for me to match their young and current images. Lastly, thank you for presenting a beautiful story!!
And, I was wondering where is Seungkwan? I didn't find him in every chapter. Just curious.
