Paths

Polar.

"You," the police officer's words echoed in Mingyu's head, "What do you want to do in the future?"

That was a good question.

Mingyu stared up at the bare ceiling above his head, his eyes focusing on the elevated parts of the ceiling that were highlighted by the sunlight coming from the window. His room was clean, as per usual. His condo, however was empty, and despite it being the middle of March it was eerily cold. He furrowed his brows, still thinking of the question, and becoming concerned and frustrated when he couldn't come up with an answer. After a few more minutes of staring, and still no answer, he quickly dug into his pocket, took out his phone, and dialed his boyfriend's number. After only 2 rings, Wonwoo answered, and before he could even say 'Hi', Mingyu said,

"Babe! Help me," he said into the phone.

A few seconds of silence passed by,

"Did you get arrested again?!" Wonwoo practically yelled.

Mingyu started laughing at his boyfriend's assumption,

"Yah, Mingyu-ah, that's not funny. I fully told you-"

"I didn't get arrested!" Mingyu interrupted before Wonwoo could get any angrier, "Geez, Babe.. I'm not that bad." he said, chuckling.

"Oh... So then, what?" Wonwoo asked, his calm tone had returned to his words.

"I don't know what I should do in the future." Mingyu sighed,

"Do what makes you happy," Wonwoo advised, and Mingyu smirked,

"So, are you telling me to do you?"

Wonwoo didn't know whether to feel disgusted or flattered, considering Mingyu just implied that the Class Pres. makes him happy.

"W-What, no! The Hell? Babe, if you're not being serious then I'll just hang-"

"I'm kidding~" Mingyu said in a cheerful tone,

"You know I wouldn't disrespect you like that. Or rush you," the other assured. Wonwoo smiled and made himself comfortable at his desk, putting his phone on speaker and setting it on the table as he continued the assignments infront of him.

"Babe~" Mingyu whined, "what do I do~"

It was currently a Tuesday evening, and Wonwoo remembered, and assumed that tomorrow was probably the reason Mingyu was stressing about the future. On Wednesday, the seniors are to take a survey to find out what the graduating students want to do post-secondary school and to determine what universities or colleges they want to attend, so that teachers can set up plans for their students.

"Mingyu-ah, the test tomorrow isn't anything official... What we write down on the survey isn't what we're for sure going to do." Wonwoo tried to comfort,

"Yeah, I know that..." Mingyu said to Wonwoo's surprise.

"So then why are you stressing?"

"Because I'm just scared for the future. The uncertainty of it. But, one thing I want to assure in my future is happiness, and I don't want to have a job that makes me feel miserable everyday." Mingyu said, laughing near the end of his words.

"So, then do something with science."

Mingyu thought for a second, furrowing his brows at his boyfriend's words,

"What do you mean?" he asked, for clarification.

"You love astrology, right?"

"Not as much as I love you~"

"Lame." Wonwoo said his voice monotone, Mingyu started laughing, making Wonwoo chuckle too,

"Okay, sorry. Continue?" Mingyu said,

"Your passion for the stars, and the galaxy. Form your career around that," Wonwoo continued on, "I think I've learned more about stars and constellations from you than our actual Science teacher."

The couple laughed but then Mingyu really got to thinking,

"So... An astronaut?!" He said excitedly.

"Or you know... A teacher." Wonwoo said realistically, and once again sent Mingyu into some thought.

"A teacher?"

"Yeah," Wonwoo said  as he put down his pencil and crossed his legs, changing his position in the chair.

"You know, that paassion can really move a kid and inspire them... And you may not realize it, but you honestly go on for hours about stars," Wonwoo said, chuckling

Mingyu laughed,

"Sorry," he apologized

"Don't be," Wonwoo assured, "I really love and admire that side of you." he said with a smile on his face

"A teacher, huh?" Mingyu considered the profession, picturing himself teaching kids about something he actually loved. The thought of him actually inspiring someone, and being the teacher that he needed when he was younger. Being the type of teacher that's more of a friend than some superior authority. He pictured himself talking to kids, sharing his knowledge and love for stars.

It didn't seem like that bad of an idea.

The couple continued talking, the topic of the future slowly drifting away as different topics replaced it. Their phone calls were always long, neither of them wanting to hang up or stop listening to the other's voice. Even if neither of them were speaking, they still didn't end the call, content with just each other's breathing, or knowing eventually another conversation would probably strike up. They didn't even hang up when they went to go eat dinner, they just simply left the call on and left their phones in their rooms, or in Mingyu's case, he didn't have to eat with family. It's because of this habit that both boys were grateful that they had unlimited calling and text with their phone plans.

Wednesday had come, and the students filled out their surveys, all of them unsure of their future. However, after that talk with his boyfriend, Mingyu had seemed to take a liking to the idea of him being a teacher. So, he filled his number one choice of occupation as an educator. Wonwoo didn't know what he wanted to do yet. His friends, and his boyfriend were saying that he's so smart that he could do anything he wanted. But the thing is, he didn't know what he wanted. For the past 3 years, his goal was to remain top of the class, maintain his grades so that choosing a path would be easy. But it wasn't as easy as planned. There wasn't something he was passionate about like Mingyu was about the galaxy. So, he just put some random career, hoping to be inspired by something in the near future.

At the end of the day, Mingyu turned to Wonwoo, with a few textbooks in his hand,

"Babe," he said, "Wanna study together?"

Wonwoo was surprised at the sudden request. He immediately put his hand to his boyfriend's forehead, then moving on to check his neck,

"Are you sick?" the Class President asked, as Mingyu gave an unamused look, "You're not burning up though.." Wonwoo said as he continued checking his boyfriend's body temperature. Mingyu swatted away his boyfriend's hands as Wonwoo started laughing,

"Fine, I'll just go to the library myself" Mingyu said, and noticing that Wonwoo didn't move he added,

"Might pick up something else than just books," he said with a sly wink.

Wonwoo made a face as he gathered his books and muttered to himself,

"Why the Hell is my boyfriend like this, what did I do to make him this playboy, like holy-" his inaudible words were interrupted when Mingyu roughly took him into his arms, and gave him a kiss on the forehead,

"Oh, so now you want to study, hm?", he said, teasing.

Wonwoo shook out of his boyfriend's grasp and started walking ahead to the library,

"Yeah, I want to study." Wonwoo said, then he glanced back at Mingyu who was walking behind him,

"Not just the books though." he said with a slick smirk, and Mingyu scrunched his nose as he caught up to his boyfriend.

"You're so cruel~" Mingyu whined, and the couple laughed as they entered the library.

They ended up sitting infront of each other at a table near the window. Mingyu laid out several textbooks infront of him, and Wonwoo noticed that the only subject missing was science.

"What're you studying, babe?" Wonwoo said, leaning over and looking the textbook infront of his boyfriend, and Mingyu looked up from the page,

"Everything, basically..." he answered, "I want to improve my grades so that I can get into a good university."

"Yah~, my boyfriend's going to be a smart, attractive delinquent... And maybe a teacher in the future." Wonwoo said, he gave Mingyu a smile and said,

"Keep studying. I know you can do it!" Wonwoo's eyes formed crescents as his perfect teeth were exposed in happiness. Their faces were close enough that Mingyu kissed him sweetly, on his lips and when they parted gave him a smile. His eyes conveying the love he had for the boy sitting in front of him.

"I love you." the taller of the 2 said, Wonwoo couldn't help but smile again as he replied,

"I love you, too."

Wonwoo took out his one textbook, and lo and behold, it was Science. The familiar textbook caught Mingyu's attention and he looked up from his History notes,

"Science?" Mingyu said, with an excited smile on his face, and Wonwoo laughed at his boyfriend's appearance, looking like an energetic dog ready to play fetch.

"Mhm," Wonwoo confirmed, "It's my worst subject, to be honest."

"Worst?! How?!" the taller replied, surprised.

"I don't know! And, not everyone's born a scientist." Wonwoo said, making a face at his lover. Mingyu chuckled,

"Astrologist" Mingyu corrected, a smirk on his face.

Wonwoo fumbled to find an eraser and immediately threw it at his boyfriend, bouncing off his head and landing somewhere on the library floor.

"Ow~" Mingyu whined, rubbing the top of his head, cutely.

"Yah, babe. Help me study!" he then said, a smile on his face, "I'll help you with Science, so help me with everything else" he continued, laughing.

Mingyu gathered his materials then made his way to sit beside his boyfriend. The two were studying, but Wonwoo was practically sitting on the side of Mingyu's seat, considering he had to constantly keep leaning over to explain to Mingyu. Mingyu wrapped his arms around his boyfriend's waist and rested his head in the nook between Wonwoo's head and shoulder, his chin on the Class President's collarbone. Their closeness and intimacy was natural and comfortable for them, so they continued studying like this, almost cuddling. An hour went by, and now Wonwoo had returned to his respective seat, and the couple was actually studying. Wonwoo sometimes got distracted from Science and would get lost just at the sight of Mingyu's handsome face. Wonwoo admired and loved the concentration, focus, determination and the occasional frustration showing on his boyfriend's face. It was almost comical how even though they were dating, they would still steal glances at each other, as if they were concealing a crush.

Mingyu, too, go distracted while studying, considering his boyfriend was right beside him. After a couple of more minutes, Mingyu felt a light weight on his shoulder, and turned to see his boyfriend's head using his biceps as a pillow. Wonwoo was sleeping peacefully, his hands laid limp on the notebook, his pencil not grasped. Mingyu stared at his boyfriend's peaceful face, a quiet little snore coming from him. He appreciated the way the sunlight highlighted Wonwoo's extremely handsome features, and Mingyu was once again reminded of how lucky he was to have this person, to be dating this person, to receive his love back. Mingyu allowed him to sleep, considering he's the one who dragged him to the library, although it was kind of difficult to study, considering he was left handed. He didn't want to wake Wonwoo up, so he transferred the pencil to his right hand, which resulted in almost illegable notes, but it was okay.

After another half hour, Mingyu decided that he had studied enough, and gently woke up Wonwoo. The Class President rubbed his eyes, as he blinked away his sleepiness. He smiled at Mingyu who had already packed his textbooks,

"Morning, sleepy head." he said,

"Sorry~" Wonwoo apologized for falling asleep on their study date.

Mingyu kissed him sweetly, catching Wonwoo off guard. The couple just stared at each other, their looks conveying the words not being spoken.

"Thanks for stuyding with me!" Mingyu said, happily as he got up from the chair and stretched. Wonwoo packed his Science textbook and then got up, himself. By the time the couple left the library, the sun was setting. They held hands as Mingyu walked Wonwoo home, just conversing about anything.

When Wonwoo got home, he decided to make up for the studying he missed out on from napping, and took out his Science text book, placing it open on his desk. Upon opening the heavy textbook, Wonwoo was greeted with a sticky note,

"Hey babe. Study hard!" it said, in his boyfriend's familiar handwriting.

Wonwoo smiled at the lame message, and was reminded of one of their first conversations during Science class. Them writing little insignificant messages and passing a sticky note back and forth.

As Wonwoo turned the pages to where he was going to focus on, there were several more sticky notes written by Mingyu. The little notes contained messages of motivation,

"Fighting!", "Love you, Class Pres." were few of the messages Mingyu left.

Other sticky notes contained an explanation of theories in Science, in Mingyu's words, which actually helped Wonwoo alot. He smiled at the sticky notes, their neon color popping on the bland pages of text that Wonwoo didn't really care for. He called Mingyu, and he immediately answered,

"Hey," the taller said into the phone,

"Hi," Wonwoo replied, not even trying to hide the happiness in his voice,

"What happened to you, Mr. Cheerful?" Mingyu inquired, chuckling.

"I happen to be dating the most amazing guy possible," he answered,

"Really?" the delinquent replied, "I didn't know dating yourself was a thing..."

"Jesus Christ, how can you be so lame~" Wonwoo whined, face palming himself as he leaned on his desk, and the couple laughed.

"Babe, what did you write for the survey today?" Mingyu asked,

"Hmm, I wrote some bullcrap answer, I'm not sure what I want to do yet... Oh! That reminds me, Babe, I got a part-time job."

"A job? Where?"

"At the coffee shop, down the street. Jihoon helped me get it," Wonwoo said, happily.

Mingyu didn't really like the fact that Wonwoo would be working hours that would probably add to stress from his studies at school. But, he couldn't deny the happiness and pride in his boyfriend's voice, so he smiled and said,

"That's great, babe."

The couple continued talking, their call ending a little earlier than usual considering Wonwoo actually wanted to study. Near the end, Mingyu asked him when he started,

"Oh, I start working next Monday, then I have shifts for the rest of that week." Mingyu acknowledged the information, then let his boyfriend go to focus on the books.

The next Monday, Wonwoo went home from school and then changed into the uniform for the cafe. The cafe was a little special, considering it was mixed with a library, so customers could buy a drink and then grab a book, and just relax. Wonwoo walked into the cafe, and was immediately greeted by the manager, Kim Jeekyun, who introduced him to a boy around Wonwoo's age named Im Hoonjae.

Im Hoonjae was a boy, same age as Wonwoo. Taller than him, but still not Mingyu's height, and honestly, Hoonjae wasn't bad looking. He was Korean, but Wonwoo noticed how his eyes weren't dark brown like everyone he knew, instead his eyes were more of a Caramel brown, that really stood out in the sunlight. He had a sweet smile that would probably swoon anyone that saw it, so his position as server was pretty fitting.

"Hi, I'm Hoonjae," he said as he shook Wonwoo's hand, "You can call me Jae, though." he added with a smile.

"I'm Wonwoo," the shorter introduced himself, a friendly smile on his face, "Sorry, I don't have any nicknames" he chuckled.

"I'll think of one for you!" Jae said as he broke their handshake, and went to attend to customers while Wonwoo was taken to the back by the manager who gave him a basic rundown of how things worked at that cafe.

And sure enough, by Thursday, Hoonjae had a nickname for the shorter.

"Sloth!" Jae said, and Wonwoo hesitantly turned around from cleaning the table, unsure if Jae was addressing him.

"Sloth?" Wonwoo said, and gave an unamused face, "Really?" he asked.

"Yeah!" Hoonjae said, as he picked up a damp cloth and began helping Wonwoo clean the tables,

"Everytime we're on break, I either see you sleeping or reading, or in the process of falling asleep with a book in your hand." Jae said, making Wonwoo laugh.

"Okay, nickname justified." Wonwoo gave in, receiving a smile from the taller.

They were leaving after a long workday, and Jae ruffled Wonwoo's hair, saying,

"See you later, Sloth!"

"Wow, so you call him Jae, huh?" Mingyu said, looking at his boyfriend with a slightly amused, yet irritated face.

"Yeah, he's really cool. You know, I want his eyes. They're really nice, especially in the sunlight."

Wonwoo was sharing his excitement of actually making a friend at the cafe sooner than expected. He obviously thought Mingyu would be happy for him, actually being social and making friends, and Mingyu was. But he was also a little irked,

"He calls me Sloth, though.." Wonwoo said, furrowing his brows, staring at his shoes

It was currently lunch, and the couple was cuddling on a rarely used staircase, Mingyu leaning his back against the wall, as Wonwoo lend his back on his chest.

"Nicknames already..." Mingyu said, lowly, under his breath.

"You say something, babe?" Wonwoo said as he turned around, about to take bite out of his pizza.

Well, my nickname will always be the best. Mingyu thought, satisfied and he smiled,

"Nope" he answered, then proceeded to take a bite of Wonwoo's lunch, before the boy could.

By the end of the week, Hoonjae and Wonwoo were really close. Wonwoo didn't really think of their friendship as anything more, considering Jae was friends with everyone. But, Jae felt a little different. The 2 boys were often together, and honestly a lot of their regular customers came just to see Jae or Wonwoo, or even both of them. Jae was falling for Wonwoo day by day, and the boy was oblivious to it. It's not that he purposely ignored Jae's feelings, it's just there's a very thin line between lovers and friends, and Wonwoo already had his heart set on Mingyu. But, Jae didn't know that Wonwoo was taken, and one day, he planned to confess his feelings to Wonwoo, who he thought felt the same.

The cafe was already closed, and Wonwoo and Hoonjae were just cleaning up, before locking the place up and going home. Wonwoo was arranging the books on the shelves, while Jae was behind the counter, counting the money in the register. But, the boy had to keep recounting, as he lost count and got distracted as he gazed at Wonwoo, his heart racing in anxiety for his nearing confession.

Wonwoo finished with the books, and sat on a barstool, leaning on the counter, as Jae laughed at him, pretending that he was interrupted from counting their profits of the day.

"Tired?"

"More like dead." Wonwoo said, honestly, and once again Jae chuckled.

"I think I'm going to head home," Wonwoo announced as he grudgingly got up from the stool and was going to make his way to the staff room,

"Actually, Wonwoo-ah!" Jae said, as he began quickly inserting the money, "Can I talk to you for a second?"

Jae was making his way out from behind the counter, when he heard the entrance door bell ring,

"Sorry, we're clo-" Jae was saying with a friendly smile, informing the customer coming in that the cafe was past it's open hours.

"Mingyu-ah!" Wonwoo's happy voice interrupted the boy before he could continue.

Wonwoo immediately woke up, energized, his drowsy and tired persona totally gone as he ran into Mingyu's arms. Mingyu smiled as he hugged Wonwoo, and kissed him, as Wonwoo refused to release his arms from his boyfriend's waist.

Hoonjae watched as Wonwoo showed a smile that Jae had never seen before. The smile and his eyes weren't just "being friendly", it was true love.

"Babe, what're you doing here?" Wonwoo asked, happiness in his every word.

"I thought I would pick you up from work... You've had a long week, right?" Mingyu answered, lovingly, as he wrapped his arm around Wonwoo's shoulder.

The tall boy turned to see the other at the counter, he was trying not to, but was staring. When they made eye contact, Hoonjae habitually smiled, and said,

"Hi, I'm Hoonjae."

Mingyu eyed him for a while,

"Ah~, so you're the one who calls my boyfriend 'Sloth'." Hoonjae was going to apologize, incase the nickname offended him in any way, but Mingyu showed him a dashing smile and said,

"Thanks for looking after Wonwoo."

Mingyu didn't fail to notice the slight jealousy and pain in Jae's face as he just smiled and said,

"He's a great friend." while nodding.

"Oh! Babe, just wait, I need to clean up a couple of more tables," Wonwoo said as he walked to grab the cloth. The cloth was snatched from under his hand by Jae who said,

"I can do it, you go home, Wonwoo-ah." with a smile.

The action caught Wonwoo by surprise, and he looked at Jae, oddly,

"Are you sure? No, nevermind, c'mon, give me the cloth, I can do it. Mingyu can wait a few minutes," Wonwoo said, reaching for the cloth.

Jae used the cloth to slap Wonwoo's hand and the Class Pres. let out a small,

"Ow" at the quick, stinging impact.

"I can do it~" Jae assured, "You should go home before your boyfriend has to carry you, Sloth." he continued, laughing.

Wonwoo chuckled as he said,

"He'd do it if I asked him to. Sloths do cling onto trees anyway, right?"

The boy made his way to the staff room, and came out wearing an oversized red jacket. Mingyu laughed in amusement,

"What happened to your navy blue jacket?"

Wonwoo mocked his boyfriend's words, and gave a little bit of attitude, replying.

"What happened to you wanting to break up with me?" he asked, with raised eyebrows.

Mingyu looked down at him, and blinked a few times,

"You know, that jacket looks really cute on you," Mingyu said, changing the subject while taking Wonwoo's hand and leading him to the door.

Hoonjae couldn't help but be amused at their relationship, and smiled as Wonwoo thanked him for the 4th time and waved goodbye, his other hand holding on tight to his boyfriend's.

After locking up the cafe, Hoonjae received a text from a friend who knew about his plans to confess today.

Hey, how'd it go? Does he like you back?

Nope, he has a boyfriend. Jae replied,

So? That hasn't stopped you before... Hoonjae's friend messaged back, truthfully.

Hoonjae thought about that statement, as the image of them greeting each other, and the eyes with which Mingyu looked at Wonwoo, and vice versa. He thought about the way they held hands, and hugged, and the kiss that was nothing short of pure love.

Noo... This couple.. I feel like nothing could separate them, they love each other too much to let that happen.

What do you mean? his friend texted back, and Hoonjae's final response was

Him and his boyfriend...

They belong together.

Chapter 36: Hai Zen! I spent a few days to finish this story. And I realllyyyyy love this!!! How the story goes sweetly, then comes the problem that makes me a little scared when Mingyu fights. I like the portrayal of Wonwoo's character. It doesn't feel forced, just flows naturally. And I'm reading this in 2022 which made it easy for me to match their young and current images. Lastly, thank you for presenting a beautiful story!!
And, I was wondering where is Seungkwan? I didn't find him in every chapter. Just curious.
