Lee Seokmin

Polar.

"Seokmin-ah?"

The 9 other boys thought as they looked at the duo who seemingly knew each other, but all of them thought Mingyu had no previous friends, or he never mentioned any at least.

"It is you!" Seokmin exclaimed as he shot up from the couch he was resting in, and hugged Mingyu.

Mingyu flinched at the sudden action, his past made him skeptical to any physical contact, and it didn't help that it was sudden. But, Seokmin still managed to hug Mingyu, and the boys around them started giggling at Mingyu's flustered reaction as he pushed Seokmin off, still unfamiliar with him,

"Yah, yah, why're you so familiar with me?" Mingyu questioned,

Seokmin was still smiling as he winced in pain, although it was subtle, and he placed his hand on the back of his head.

"Because we're friends!", the boy said with a smile.

Some time has passed, and Seokmin got significantly taller, though his jet black hair and dashing smile remained the same. He was almost as tall as Mingyu, but for the most part blended in with the 9 other boys. For some reason, Mingyu blushed at the other's words and Jihoon pointed it out, laughing.

"D-don't be ridiculous. We met once," Mingyu said, trying not to get ahead of himself.

"Yeah, but you were crying, so that automatically makes us close, right?"

Mingyu gave him a glare for mentioning that he was crying. It's not that he had this extreme pride, he was only 12, but he knew that his friends were probably going to ask for the reason why, and he wasn't sure he was ready to tell them just yet. Mingyu couldn't really get mad at Seokmin though, his smile made him weak and susceptible to persuasion, so he just said,

"Still. We only saw each other that day,"

"Mingyu-ah, don't be so cold~" Seokmin whined,

"Let's go look at stars together again!" he added, and Mingyu squinted his eyes at the request.

"Stars? Mingyu's favourite subject is science," Jisoo said,

"He once spent the whole lunch break trying to learn the names of stars, saying that someone didn't-"

Mingyu hit Jeonghan before he could finish his sentence, his cheeks flushed with red.

Seokmin looked at the taller, with slight confusion then a satisfied smile spread across his face,

"See, they do have names! You could've just told me you didn't know them,"

Mingyu looked away, pouting slightly,

"Now you can tell me the names!" Seokmin said with a friendly smile,

"No way, why would I-"

Soonyoung slapped him in the arm,

"Don't be so mean,"

"Yah, how can someone so nice like you be friends with him, huh?"

Seungcheol said as the boys started settling around the room. The abandoned building was practically empty except for a couch that remained underneath the skylight which allowed rays to come through and shine on Seokmin, making him seem more angelic and sweet. The boys were sitting themselves down, on the couch, on the floor, leaving only Seokmin and Mingyu standing.

"He's not too bad" Seokmin answered, laughing. Mingyu narrowed his eyes at him,

"What do you mean not too bad? I'm amazing." he said, laughing and making the other boys scoff, laugh, or roll their eyes. The tall boy sat himself down on the couch, and Seokmin soon followed suit, sitting beside the tall boy.

"So, Seokmin... why were you in that alley?" Jisoo asked carefully.

Seokmin tilted his head and thought for a second before replying,

"Oh! I was trying to walk home from school, but got lost along the way. So, I bumped into those guys, and... I think you guys know the rest."

"Wait, you go to our school?" Hansol asked.

By the time they had encountered Seokmin, it was already almost the end of the school year, it was April and Mingyu's birthday was this month. After being at school for 7 months, they found it odd that they failed to notice a tall boy with glasses, who should bein at least one of their classes.

"Starting today I do," Seokmin said,

"Yah, why do you have no sense of direction?"

"Mingyu-ah, not everyone can find their way through the town regardless of their starting point, okay?" Jeonghan replied

Mingyu murmured to himself and folded his arms across his chest. He didn't think he was superior, but his sense of direction was no joke, but it was natural so he found it weird when people got lost.

"Oh, thank you guys for saving me." Seokmin said with a slight apologetic tone in his voice, and smile.

"No problem! Try not to involve yourself with gangsters... they're bad news," Soonyoung said

"What do you mean 'no problem'?! You guys were yelling at me to come back! Technically, I saved you." Mingyu stated. The boys started laughing, including Seokmin

"But it still feels good knowing we stopped some bullying."

"Yah. We should keep going this, we'll be like heroes!" LeeChan said, his 12 year old side of him showing more than ever. However, the boys surrounding him were also 12, and so they all agreed cheering that they will get strong. Strong enough to protect the things they love, strong enough to protect each  other.

"So... What's your name?" Jisoo asked, already knowing half of it, but decided it was good to get him to introduce himself.

"Oh!", Seokmin immediately shot up from the couch, surprising the boys around him, and he bowed formally

"Hello, my name is Lee Seokmin! I look forward to getting to know you all.", he said his loud, bold voice resounding in the practically empty building. His introduction was followed by some awkward silence, as Seokmin just stood there, 10 pairs of eyes on him. He scratched the back of his head and smiled awkwardly. The silence continued until the boys exploded in laughter. Their unique laughs and clapping coming together as one big sound of amusement, while Seokmin stood amidst the laughter and was unaware of what to do.

"Yah, don't be so formal!"

"We can be friends, so don't speak like that!"

"Are we your teachers or friends?"

Words of acceptance and belonging were being said amongst the laughter, and Seokmin soon felt comfortable and laughed with the boys. What an odd encounter, but he liked the 9 other boys who showed friendly faces and had seemingly accepted him. He sat back down beside Mingyu and the shorter smiled,

"Looks like we can be proper friends, now!", he said happily.

Mingyu smiled too, for unknown happiness that would soon be determined.

"Okay, boys!"

The tallest of them got up from the couch, and extended his hand

"Let's make a pact."

"Yah, yah, who made you the leader?" Minghao protested,

"You guys listen to me anyway! You guys ran into the alley after I did, so I'm basically automatically the leader." Mingyu argued

"But, don't boss us around!" LeeChan requested.

Mingyu rolled his eyes,

"Of course I won't. Let's to each other, okay?" Mingyu asked, his eyebrows raised searching for agreement with his friends. The boys soon nodded with approval and then Mingyu smiled

"Okay! Come here, guys" Mingyu said, his arm still outstretched as he used his other one to gesture his friends to join him, standing, and gather around. One by one, the boys got up, including Seokmin and they formed a circle, Mingyu's arm in the middle. The tallest shook his arm, implying that the other boys should do the same, and soon 11 arms were piled up on top of one another, Mingyu's hand on the top. He gave a peculiar look, shook his head, and removed his hand,

"Never mind, this is too cliche."

He then suddenly took Seokmin's pinky, who was standing at his right.

"Here, let's do this. Grab the person on your right's thumb with your pink." Mingyu instructed.

It took a while, but the boys managed to all connect themselves, pinky to thumb, thumb to pinky. They were standing in a circle, their intertwined hands in the middle,

"Wait, why our pinkies?" Jihoon inquired

"Like a pinky promise," Mingyu answered

"What're we promising?" LeeChan asked.

"Hmmm..." Mingyu started thinking

"How about a promise to stay together?" Seokmin suggested and was immediately approved by the boys with smiles and nods.

"And to get stronger to protect things important to us?" Hansol added.

"Okay!" Mingyu exclaimed, reaffirming his grip on the two boys to his sides.

"We, brothers," he smiled at them, and the other boys smiled back,

"Promise to stick together no matter what. And to be strong enough to protect things that matter to us!"

The 10 other boys replied with screams, and simultaneously they released each other's thumbs and pinkies and threw their hands up in cheers. Seokmin was smiling, because he already found a group of people that made him feel like he belonged. This abandoned building wasn't to banged up, in fact the interior was fairly nice, it was just the outside that was dingy.

"Yah! Let's make this our base," Seokmin said

"Base for what? We're not a gang" Minghao replied

"No~, just like, our hang out place, yeah?" Seokmin clarified

"Will it be safe though?"

"We'll make it safe," Seokmin assured with a comforting smile.

The boys looked around the building and soon started nodding in satisfaction.

"Okay! This'll be our Secret Base." Mingyu declared.

And that was the day the group formed. On a whim, nothing planned, just a series of actions that went into a domino effect out of brotherhood and friendship, a sense of rightness and belonging.

Fast forward 3 years and the boys are already 15, some 16 and Mingyu was turning 16. The boys stuck together through these 3 years happily. No drama or fights, considering they were all like brothers by now. They were insanely close, none of them felt even the slightest bit awkward with the other, and they could share everything with each other. Back at home though, Mingyu was still receiving beatings. The man never touched him like that again, thank God, but since Mingyu was regularly attending school now, the man would beat him on his back or legs, or anywhere the bruises wouldn't show due to clothing. Mingyu tried to stay away from home though, mainly staying at the base after school, but would go home once the sun started to set and he was the only one left in the building. After 3 years of being with the same people, developing an unbreakable bond and a friendship that could easily turn into something more, feelings seem to become a factor in your actions, decisions and words. Mingyu chose to keep his home life a secret, deciding that what the boys didn't know wouldn't hurt them. Everyone knew, and thought it was obvious but Mingyu and Seokmin were practically dating. They were the closest duo in the group, on par with Jisoo and Jeonghan. If they were to start dating, barely anything would change. They comfortably link arms or hands while walking or jogging, although they brushed it off as 'brotherly love'. But, both of them had feelings for the other. However, since they were so close, they both suppressed their feelings in fear that their already amazing friendship would shatter.

Mingyu's birthday was on a Saturday this year, so the boys devised a surprise plan to go to his house and deliver their gift. They were already 16, some were 15, but the majority of them were all teenagers and decided it would be cool if they could surprise their brother. So, it was 6PM and Mingyu was sitting in his room, reading an astrology book as he snacked on some bite-sized brownies. He then heard the doorbell, and opened his door. He saw his dad walking towards the front door as he looked down from the landing of the staircase, only to go wide eyed when the door fully opened revealing 10 familiar boys that he called brothers. He then became extremely scared and worried about what his dad would do. His friends were the same age as him, and there were multiples of them, so he quickly ran down the stairs in fear of what his dad may do next.

"Mingyu-ah!" Seokmin who was at the front of the pack was smiling, his eyes gone.

Mingyu quickly looked at his dad then back at his friends.

"What're you doing out there, boys. Come in!" the man behind Mingyu welcomed the boys into their home.

The 10 boys shuffled their way in, and Mingyu sighed lowly in relief. He was kind of thankful for his dad's habit of putting on a front, and acting like he was the perfect dad and husband. So, for now atleast, he could relax and not be worried about his dad hurting his friends. Which, he didn't. In fact, the boys were entertained by the man, giving them snacks and letting them hang out in the basement where Mingyu's 'man', or 'teen' cave was located. The man laughed and hung out with the boys, and for a millisecond Mingyu could be fooled that maybe, that's how he would be treated from now on. At around 8, the boys were leaving, and suddenly Seokmin grabbed Mingyu's wrist,

"Mr. Kim! We're stealing Mingyu tonight! Thank you for today!"

And they were off.

"Yah! Yah! Where are we going?!" Mingyu said, slightly panicked as he turned to look at his dad who was waving, and forcing a smile which would soon disappear once the boys were out of sight.

"C'mon! Live a little, it's your birthday!" Soonyoung said.

The 11 boys were running, and about halfway through the run, Mingyu knew where they were headed; to the base.

When they got there, the all settled down around the room. Mingyu was catching his breath on the couch, when suddenly Seokmin appeared, sitting on the floor infront and below him. He was carrying a small box, which he extended out to Mingyu. The taller accepted it, curiously and turned the box in his hand.

"Happy birthday, Mingyu-ah.", the boy said sweetly.

"It's from all of us, Leader!" LeeChan said, laughing.

"Happy birthday, Mingyu!" the boys cheered and Mingyu couldn't help but smile.

Mingyu opened the box, revealing a thick silver ring. He looked up from the ring in his fingers, and noticed the boys holding all of their right hand's pinkies up.

"It's our promise." Seokmin explained, looking at Mingyu who was looking at the ring. He slipped it on his pinky, and it fit perfectly. The boy smiled and immediately got up from the couch, first hugging Seokmin, then waving his arms, gesturing for all of them to join this group hug.

"Thank you, guys... I love you."

"Oh! I also have a separate gift for you," Seokmin announced after the group hug dispersed. Mingyu tilted his head in confusion.Seokmin went into the corner of the room that wasn't visible from their usual hang out in the building. The tall boy pulled along with him a white telescope with a ribbon on top.

"Happy birthday!" he said, and Mingyu once again started smiling, almost to the point of tears.

"Now, you have to tell me the names of the stars, okay?", the boy joked with a cute smile on his face, and Mingyu took him into another hug.

"Thank you." he said into his ear.

The rest of the night went with them just talking about how their surprise birthday plan was a success. But then, the boys started talking about Mingyu's father. They were all complimenting him, talking about him positively. Saying how he was so cool that he played video games, and served them snacks. Some of them even dared to say, "I wish he was my dad," or "Mingyu-ah! Adopt me, I want your dad". Obviously, the boys knew no better about his true nature, and as they started saying positive words about him, the horrible scarring memories starting flashing into his mind. But, the others continued, and Mingyu ended up snapping,

"Don't say that about him, please!" he said, squeezing his eyes shut. The boys looked at him with concerned faces,

"You don't want him in your life, please don't say that. Please don't wish for him to be your dad, you don't know him..." Mingyu's eyes were lined with tears, as he pleaded his friends.

"Mingyu-ah..." Jeonghan said, carefully.

And that night was the night Mingyu had told the boys his past. The scarring, horrible past that he honestly wished to bury, but relived everyday, each time he was hit. The boys had never seen Mingyu cry before, their leader was strong, and always smiling. No one knew what he went through, and was shocked, unaware of what to do as tears streamed down Mingyu's face as he poured out his feelings and past experiences.

The night calmed down as Mingyu did the same, thanking the boys for their comfort and hugs. He told them that he was okay, and that one day, he'd get out of that house, or get his dad out. It'd just take some time.

As the hours dragged on, the boys were all gathered around the telescope as Mingyu tried to search the sky for stars, through the skylight. But, they ended up going up to the roof, to get a better view. The boys brought up some blankets and pillows, and were all laying on the rooftop, stargazing, Mingyu pointing out and naming some stars that he knew the name, but not the meaning of.

"Shouldn't you guys go home?" Mingyu said, concerned for his friends.

"Nah, let's just sleep here tonight." Jihoon said,

"It'll be like we're camping!" Minghao said, and the boys laughed at the slightly idiotic statement.

The boys fell asleep, Mingyu and Seokmin beside each other, the other boys sprawled out amongst their makeshift bed. Everyone else was asleep, as Mingyu and Seokmin laid awake,

"Mingyu-ah, are you awake?"

Mingyu just replied with, "Mhm."

"The stars are so pretty." the other said, and Mingyu smiled in agreement.

"Have you heard the song about like, the moon and the stars?"

"Wow, so specific."

The two laughed quietly, trying not to wake the others,

"Sing some of it for me."

And that was the night Mingyu discovered Seokmin's vocal talent, which made him fall for him even more.

Short step, deep breath

Everything is alright

Chin up, I can't step into the spotlight

Mingyu fell asleep to a lullably song by his bestfriend's sweet voice

"This was the best birthday that I could've ever asked for," was Mingyu's last thought as he drifted off to sleep.

It was at the age of 16 where everything took a turn for the worse. It started off really simple, not that dangerous. Basically, the boys had gotten into fighting recently, nothing serious, just a couple of punches thrown here and there. Unlike Mingyu, Seokmin was fairly weak, so he didn't really like to participate, but just supported his brothers from the side. The boys fought, gaining some respect with each person they "beat", but honestly, they only touched people that messed with one of them first. If you touched one out of the 11, you had all 11 against you. So, they gained respect and their base was now known as their base. However, one fight would change all of their lives.

One day the boys were walking to the base, in the evening. Just 10 of them though, Seokmin said he would meet them there, but would be walking a separate route, so the boys just said okay, and made their way. It was already dark, but as teenagers, they hung out at night, and it was fine. Their parents always knew who they were with considering the people didn't change. They were walking when they heard grunting from an alley on the way to the base. They walked with more confidence than they did in the past, so without hesitation Mingyu stepped into the alley to see what was going on. On the ground was Seokmin, bleeding and coughing up blood, cuts and bruises everywhere in his body. There was a gang beating Seokmin up relentlessly, not holding back any of their strength. Mingyu's eyes went wide as he sprinted towards the group, his brothers following close behind. Anger took up most of their heart, you don't simply mess with one of their family members and get away with it. And so, a brawl began between the gang and the band of brothers. Although they were respected, they were still young, ignorant to the cruelty of the worst parts of the streets. This was one of the most serious fights they had gotten into, and only at 16 going on 17, the boys were barely legal adults. Yet,punches were being thrown and landed, grunts and yelps of pain could be heard amongst the chaos. Seokmin was being resistricted by 2 of the other side's men, Mingyu desperately trying to get to him. All the boys knew he was weak, so during fights their main goal was to protect him, along with finish off the enemy. Boys kept getting in Mingyu's way and he would quickly try and knock them down or out with a swift punch, and Seokmin continued squirming, tears coming out of his eyes probably from fear. And then it happened. Something completely out of place, something that should never have happened.

The cutting of knives in a fist fight.

Mingyu's eyes widened in terror as the moonlight reflected off a thin blade that then quickly and harshly entered Seokmin, who was now clutching the wound in pain. The other boys saw it too, and immediately began punching as hard as they could, not reserving any strength, and just knocking boys out and Mingyu did the same. He quickly made his way to Seokmin, as the gang retreated, most of their boys down. Mingyu managed to catch a glimpse of the boy who had cut his bestfriend, and vowed to never forget that face and his brothers did the same. Seokmin was bleeding, crimson flowed across the asphalt of the alleyway. Mingyu was panicking, but he knew he had to get him to the hospital or something. He quickly grabbed Seokmin, who was slipping in and out of consciousness, after being beaten and stabbed. Mingyu placed him on his back, and then began sprinting for the closest hospital which was about 20 minutes away, 15 if Mingyu ran for it. And so Mingyu ran, any signs of fatigue from the fight were gone, and he sprinted. The boys were going to go with him, but decided 10 people accompanying 1 to the hospital was too much, and left their leader to the situation, hoping for the best.

The best didn't happen.

Seokmin was laying limp on Mingyu's back,

"Yah, yah Seokmin-ah. You're awake, right? Don't worry, we're almost there, almost there." Mingyu comforted as he tried to keep Seokmin conscious.

"Mingyu-ah...", the other's voice was lifeless.

"Sorry... I'm so weak, unlike you guys, I can't protect myself," he scoffed, "pretty pathetic, right?"

"Shut up, don't waste your energy and just stay awake, we're almost at the hospital"

"You said that 7 minutes ago..."

Mingyu bit his lower lip, knowing that it would probably take another 8 minutes or so for them to be truly 'almost there'.

"Mingyu-ah... I'm sorry for being a burden. Tell the boys that too, okay?"

"You tell them yourself once we get out of the hospital and they patch you up, yeah?"

Seokmin laughed softly,

"Mingyu-ah... You know I love you, right?"

Mingyu was shocked at the sudden statement, and almost stopped running but continued, remembering the bigger priority.

"Not in a stupid brother type of way. But in a way that makes me want to hold your hand, call you mine, I'd go as far to even say marry you."

Mingyu stayed silent at Seokmin's confession, and kept running, feeling a sense of relief with each building they past as they got closer.

"I love you, Kim Mingyu." Seokmin said, and Mingyu was going to yell at him, tell him he loves him too, but then the boy started singing, the tune familiar to that night on the roof,

When this world is no more,

The moon is all we'll see,

I'll ask you to fly away with me

Until the stars all fall down,

They empty from the sky

But I don't mind, if you're with me

Then everything's alright

The boy stopped singing, and Mingyu took that as a sign to sprint. He did, shortening the last 8 minutes into 4 as he sprinted into the hospital, desperately searcing for someone that could help his friend who was bleeding on his back. Doctors immediately tended to Seokmin as Mingyu stood there, blood of his friend on his hands, and soaking his back.

Seokmin didn't make it.

Mingyu found out and told the boys that he had been stabbed through the intestines, causing excessive internal bleeding. The doctors told him that Seokmin must've had amazing will-power and it was surprising he lasted the way to the hospital. They say someimtes you're so sad that you can't even cry. This was one of those times. Mingyu kept a straight face, tears not flowing his eyes were dead. Even at the boy's funeral, sitting in the front row, all he could do was stare at the boy in the casket.

This one incident caused the boys to each transfer to different highschools. Fast forward a couple of years, and Minghao is attending the same school as the bastard who stabbed and killed Seokmin. So, Mingyu decides to retaliate, cutting Sungwon across the face, and then being expelled for it, although having no regrets.

This one fight where they lost a friend made the boys realize the cruelty of the streets. Yet, they stayed. Gaining reputation, and massive strength, all to prevent another loss from happening. They were shaken from the fact that one of their brothers wasn't there anymore, so they each took about 2 weeks to grieve, and grasp the situation. When they regrouped at the base, as the leader Mingyu decided to lead a prayer, and an offertory cheer. The boys gathered in a circle, linking pinkies and thumbs, and Mingyu thought it felt different without having a certain smiley boy at his right. Their rings showed in the cheer, and by now most of them were crying, including Mingyu who had silent tears rolling down his cheek.

"For Seokmin!", he screamed, and the boys screamed back. Regret, guilt, and sadness tinting their manly yells.

That was 2 years ago. 2 years ago they lost a friend. Seokmin's ring was given to Mingyu, who now wore it around his necklace, as a keepsake. The bond of the group is stronger than ever. It was also 2 years ago that Mingyu finally decided to do something about his dad. It came in waves, the first was him finally fighting back, his skills were high due to training from the streets, and his hatred for this man was just as high. Then, he decided to go to Child Services, secretly, and complain, asking them if he had proof they could lock up the monster he called 'dad'. They approved, and so he proceeded to set up a camera in his room, knowing that the beating will happen sooner or later, and when it did, he caught it all on video. That's how his dad got out of the picture, his mom apologized multiple times for not being a good mom, unaware of what had been happening to her son.

Now, at 18, Mingyu has a boyfriend who goes by the name Jeon Wonwoo, and his mom and him live in their small house, happily. His past was hectic, and his future was unknown, but that was the life of Kim Mingyu so far. His eyes may be cold and piercing, but if you saw the way he looked at Wonwoo, or the stars, or at the grave of his bestfriend and first love, you would see that he, too is human, not just some delinquent on the streets, who fights for fun.

He fights for the bestfriend that lost his life to the streets, although he was hardly involved. He fights for the brothers he still has, and for innocent people who are hurt on the streets, like Lee Seokmin.

Lee Seokmin

A name still sensitive as it holds many horrible memories, and sights that the boys wish to wipe away. But they don't. Because Lee Seokmin also holds so many memories that make them laugh and smile to this day, 2 years later. They still laugh at the pointless bickers that him and Mingyu had due to opposing opinions. They laugh at the one time at the base where he tripped going up to the roof, and ended up falling all the way back down. All 10 of them know that he'd want them to be happy, and continue smiling even though he's gone, because that was the kind of person he was.

Mingyu tried summarizing the past 2 years as best as he could, explaining it to his boyfriend as they continued walking home. By the time he finished the story they were on Wonwoo's porch, face to face and Wonwoo was already crying. Mingyu laughed as he wiped away the tears of his boyfriend and hugged him as Wonwoo continued sobbing,

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." Wonwoo repeated through this tears and into Mingyu's jacket.

"It's okay. I'm okay." Mingyu assured as he kissed Wonwoo's forehead, and waited for him to calm down, then finally dropped him off at the Jeon house.

Wonwoo's eyes were red and was immediately questioned by his mom, who he told the whole story to, as he cried, and so did Narin.

That Christmas night, Wonwoo and Mingyu went to sleep with the same thought. Wonwoo out of curiosity, and Mingyu was reminiscing about a certain nerdy boy, who went by the name Lee Seokmin.

Chapter 36: Hai Zen! I spent a few days to finish this story. And I realllyyyyy love this!!! How the story goes sweetly, then comes the problem that makes me a little scared when Mingyu fights. I like the portrayal of Wonwoo's character. It doesn't feel forced, just flows naturally. And I'm reading this in 2022 which made it easy for me to match their young and current images. Lastly, thank you for presenting a beautiful story!!
And, I was wondering where is Seungkwan? I didn't find him in every chapter. Just curious.
