Prom?

Polar.

The months happily passed by, and Wonwoo continued working at the cafe as he gained Jae as one of his friends. It was now nearing the end of May, and the usual 4 of Jun, Minghao, Mingyu and Wonwoo were in class during their lunch period. They were talking and laughing, when suddenly a voice came on the P.A system, causing their busy and noisy classroom to pause for a moment.

"Students and staff, we ask that you take a moment to listen to this announcement from the Student Council," the familiar voice of their principal echoed through the speakers and the halls.

"Graduating students!" the Student Council president's voice took over, and their class went quiet, considering the following announcement was directed to them.

"We are happy to announce that the Student Council is now opening polls for voting on the theme for your Prom!" the class started buzzing, reminding Mingyu of how the students used to whisper amongst themselves when he entered class late.

"That's right, graduates! Prom!" she continued, "The best dance of your highschool life! Tickets will be on sale during lunch today, until next week Friday, so don't forget to get your tickets! Also, the polls for the theme, as well as voting for your Prom Queen and King begin this week!"

The class got a little louder, as girls started giggling and talking amongst themselves, excitedly. Some of them even blushing, as the guys hit each other in the arm, as if they were elementary school students playing truth or dare. Mingyu and Wonwoo, and Jun and Minghao listened, calmly, both couples knowing who their dates were going to be.

"If you have any questions, please visit the Student Council room at the back of the cafeteria! That's all from us. Thanks for listening"

The P.A system buzzed off, and the students resumed talking in normal volume, actually, it got a little louder. Girls started taking out their phone, showing their friends the dress they were planning to wear. And then talk of their Prom Queen and King came up. There wasn't anyone exceptionally popular in their year, for boys it might've been one of the four, or Jaesuk. As for the girls, no one was really well known, or popular. The 4 boys just resumed conversation, not really touching on the topic of prom, but in his mind, Mingyu was planning a way to ask the most special person in his life to prom.

A couple of days passed, and Wonwoo started getting a little anxious. Despite dating Mingyu for almost 6 months, prom was still a big deal. He started getting worried that maybe Mingyu wouldn't ask him, or maybe it was wrong to assume that Mingyu would ask him. The Class President started drowning in negative thoughts, like what if him waiting is selfish, what if Mingyu was waited, just like he was.

Should he take action? Should he ask Mingyu?

His thoughts were interrupted when his phone buzzed, and the text tone went off. He shook away the negative thoughts and smiled habitually as he looked at the contact name at the screen.

Mingyu: Hey babe, hope your day is just as amazing as you are.

Lame, Wonwoo thought as his smile grew wider.

Just wanted to tell you that I won't be coming to school tomorrow. I need to visit my aunts, they're worried about me. So, could you just collect the notes that I miss tomorrow?

Wonwoo understood his boyfriend's situation and messaged back,

Wonwoo: Sure thing, babe. I'll see you the next day, then.

Mingyu: Thanks, Wonwoo! I love you.

Wonwoo smiled as those 3 words still manage to make him cringe and make odd noises of happiness.

Wonwoo: Love you, babe

The next day, sure enough Mingyu wasn't present. Wonwoo was diligently taking notes, and making them as neat as possible so that he could just photocopy them and give them to his absent boyfriend. Today was Friday, and although he was trying to focus on the lesson, the Class Pres. couldn't help but start thinking about Prom again. It was an important dance, and night and for some reason he still felt nervous.

Since Mingyu wasn't here today, and the weekend would be upon them, Wonwoo made the resolve to buy the tickets today and ask Mingyu over the weekend.

But his plans were shattered when the P.A system buzzed, signalling an announcement.

"Attention graduating students who are attending Prom!", the School Council's representative started,

"We're happy to announce that this year, Prom was a big hit, and we have sold out of all 400 tickets!"

Wonwoo sighed and slammed his head on the desk, catching the attention of his classmates.

"We hope that all 400 of you enjoy the dance next Friday night! Results for the King and Queen will be announced at the Prom, and the results for the theme will be announced on Monday! Thank you for listening," and then the P.A buzzed off.

Wonwoo groaned as he thought that now, him and Mingyu couldn't even go.

Jun and Minghao had already gotten their tickets, and were now surrounding Wonwoo.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Jun said,

"I'm an idiot~" Wonwoo whined, "I didn't get the tickets in time~ and now Mingyu and I can't go to Prom~"

Jun and Minghao looked at each other and laughed,

"It's not the end of the world, Wonwoo-ah. You and Mingyu can just hang out on Friday,"

"But Prom is supposed to be that magical highschool experience~"

Wonwoo was still upset about the tickets selling out, and he showed it the rest of the school day. Lunch passed and he didn't even bother eating, and Jun and Minghao had given up trying to assure him that things will be just fine.

The Class President started feeling guilty, and wanted to apologize to Mingyu for expecting that the latter would ask him, and apologize for him not making an effort to ask him until last minute, when it was too late.

His thoughts were interrupting during History class, when his teacher said,

"Wonwoo-ssi, could you please get the World Map?"

He asked because, obviously he was the Class President, and it wasn't his personality or position to refuse a request from a teacher.

"Where is it, Sir?"

"It's in the storage room, inside the Gym. Sorry, there was no room in the Social Sciences office."

Seriously? That's like halfway across the school...

"Sure, sir." Wonwoo said, nonetheless.

He got up from his desk, and began making his journey to the gym.

Tch, first I can't even go to Prom, and now I need to walk like 7 minutes for a freakin' map.

Wonwoo was walking and as he got to the gym, looking through the window on the door, he noticed that all the lights were off, but also realized that something was illuminating the gym. He slowly opened the door, and poked his head in, and saw a pathway lined with candles.

Wonwoo walked in slowly, and his eyes followed the candles, and he walked in the pathway, curiously. The candles illuminated the gym, which allowed Wonwoo to see multiple heart balloons and he unconsciously smiled. What surprised him was when he looked up at the ceiling.

The gymnasium's ceiling was beautifully painted with the galaxy.

It was at that moment that Wonwoo realized what was going on.

Wonwoo smiled as he stared at the stars and constellation. But then he redirected his gaze to the end of the candle-lit path, where a tall, well built figure stood. Wonwoo's smile just grew wider as he drew closer.

The figure turned around, and sure enough, it was Mingyu.

Mingyu was smiling just as big as his boyfriend was. He held one hand behind his back, while the other was in the front, now facing Wonwoo. In that hand he held multiple poster boards.

Hi. (:

The first one read.

Wonwoo laughed at this cliche, cheesy way of communicating. Mingyu smiled and proceeded to rotate the posters

I've loved you for a long time. Liked you for even longer.

And in a week, there's this thing happening at 9PM.

Wonwoo nodded, and Mingyu waited a while before switching posters again.

At 9PM on a Friday, there are many things I could be doing.

Like stargazing.

Mingyu looked up and Wonwoo followed, and they both gazed at the artificial night sky, which consisted of beautiful stars and hues blending together.

Eating, watching anime, studying, resting.

Basically anything other than standing and trying to dance in a room full of 400 people.

Wonwoo chuckled at the accuracy of the poster, and Mingyu was pleased with his reaction.

I could be doing all those things

But,

The poster read in big bold letters.

In a week, at 9PM, I would rather be holding you in my arms. As if we're the only 2 people in the chaos of 400.

I'd rather look at the way your eyes sparkle and be with you, who lights up my darkness than look at the stars that I can see any other night.

Mingyu smiled to himself and blushed slightly as he continued rotating the poster boards,

Instead of crying over some cheesy anime, I'd rather tear up at how amazing you look in your suit.

So!

Wonwoo chuckled as Mingyu hastily switched the boards to the final message.

Jeon Wonwoo, will you go to Prom with me?

Mingyu pulled out a bouquet from behind his back, and approached Wonwoo who was standing still in awe at his boyfriend's promposal. He handed Wonwoo the bouquet, and amongst the gorgeous flowers were 2 Prom tickets.

Wonwoo accepted them gratefully, and smiled as Mingyu wrapped his arms around the shorter's waist.

"So..." Mingyu said, after they were hugging for a couple of seconds,

"Is that a yes?"

The shorter laughed and said,

"I mean, I guess you'd suffice as a date to prom..."

Mingyu started laughing too, and lifted Wonwoo's face by his chin, to look up at him, and he couldn't help but smile into their kiss as Wonwoo wrapped his arms around the taller's neck and tip toed slightly.

The couple returned to class, and Mingyu thanked their history teacher for getting in on the scheme. But then, Wonwoo had to go back to the gym, as he had forgotten the map. Minghao and Jun were laughing, telling Wonwoo that he should've believed them when they said everything would be okay.

The next couple of days, Mingyu and Wonwoo spent coordinating their outfits for Prom. The theme was a masquerade.

On Friday, their special night was upon them. It was 8:30PM, and Wonwoo was in the Living room with his parents, as his mother kept teasing at his hair which was gelled up, nicely. Narin continued pulling at pieces of his sleek black suit, and kept messing with the buttons of the white dress shirt underneath.

"Mom, I think that's enough" Wonwoo said, as Narin continued her mother duties.

"Honey, this is your special night, I want you to look perfect"

"I'm fine~" he whined as he wriggled away from his mother's tending hands.

Minsung chuckled and he placed a rough hand on his son's shoudlers,

"You look good, son."

Wonwoo smiled, and was about to say thanks, when Minsung continued,

"You get it from me."

The family started laughing, but was interrupted when they heard their doorbell ring. Wonwoo almost choked on his breath as he suddenly felt a wave of excitement and nervousness. Narin smiled at Wonwoo and happily went to open the door, not bothering to check who it was.

Yet, sure enough, when Narin opened the door, outside their house, beautifully illuminated by their porch light was their son's boyfriend.

"Good evening, Narin." Mingyu said, revealing a dashing smile.

"Mingyu-ah! Oh, you look so handsome!" she said as she welcomed the boy into her arms, and the familiar Jeon house.

Mingyu walked through the foyer, and into the living, and the couple just stared at each other for a while.

Wonwoo couldn't tear away his eyes from his boyfriend, in an all black suit, his greyish blue hair sleeked up, as usual. The black suit was a background which strikingly contrasted with the bouquet of beautiful red roses.

Mingyu, on the other hand sworn that he could've cried at how amazing the love of his life looked. He loved Wonwoo's charcoal hair that fell over his face, but gelled up made Mingyu weak. The way the suit fit his body, and conformed to all the right places caused an unconscious smile to appear on the boy's face as he got closer.

"Hi." Mingyu said once he got close enough

"Hi." Wonwoo echoed.

Mingyu handed him the bouquet of flowers, which had their promise ring around it. Narin noticed and immediately got the wrong idea,

"Oh! Mingyu, sweetie... Don't you think it's too early, I mean you guys are only 18-"

"Oh! no!" Mingyu and Wonwoo interrupted in unison,

"Mom, it's not like that~" the shorter whined as he blushed furiously

"It's- it's just a simple ring that I got him for Christmas." Mingyu explained, an awkward chuckle accompanying his words.

"Oh..." Narin said, slightly embarrased and apologetic,

"Yeah, 'oh'." Wonwoo said, unamused at the whole situation, "Dad, can you get her out of her before things get anymore awkward?"

Mingyu laughed and covered his mouth, as Wonwoo gave him a scolding glare.

"C'mon babe, let her stay. It was an honest mistake."

"Mentioning marriage and proposing isn't a mistake-"

"Technically I did propose. Just for Prom,"

"Promposal is different" Wonwoo argued.

"Wow. 'Promposal'" Mingyu repeated. "I don't think I've ever heard something so gay come out of your mouth." he chuckled.

Narin ended up staying, and was rushing the couple to have a picture together. Mingyu and Wonwoo stood close enough that they were touching, their sides slightly over lapping. The couple looked insanely attractive in the black suits that fit their lean, tall bodies.

"Okay, smile," Narin said as she held the camera up to her face,

"3, 2, 1" she counted down, and snapped the pic.

After a few seconds, she looked at the picture and said,

"Aw, Mingyu-ah, you're not looking at the camera,"

Wonwoo walked up to go look at the picture,

"Let me see,"

Upon looking, he saw him and his boyfriend happily standing together. Wonwoo was smiling at the camera, his happiness unmistakable. He then looked at Mingyu, who wasn't looking at the camera, but he was smiling as he looked down into Wonwoo's eyes. The Class President smiled as he looked at the camera in his hands,

"Sorry, did you want to take another one, I was kind of distracted..." Mingyu said, guilty.

"Nope," Wonwoo assured, "I think this is perfect."

Although Narin and Mingyu were worried, Wonwoo presistently refused to take another picture. And so, it was about 8:50PM when the couple started making their way to the school for the dance.

They were holding hands and they decided that they'd rather walk in the moonlight, than drive to the school, considering they were relatively close.

Wonwoo stared at their intertwined hands, and then looked at the ring on his right hand, back where it should be.

"Thanks for giving me back the ring.." he said, a little awkwardly.

Mingyu chuckled,

"Thanks for accepting me back."

Wonwoo smiled and blushed slightly at the words, and just tightened the grip on Mingyu's hand.

Something he never wants to let go of.

When they arrived at the dance, they received multiple stares and slight gasps. Wonwoo felt slightly uncomfortable with all the eyes on him, and Mingyu noticed. He suddenly put a fancy mask with black lace details on top of a simple white base on his boyfriend's face. Wonwoo was startled a bit, but then smiled when he saw Mingyu wearing the same one, just with the colours reversed.

The night was going by, and it was truly magical. Wonwoo stayed in Mingyu's arms most of the night, and especially loved the ballads that revealed themselves throughout the course of the night.

As the hours past by a teacher went on stage, asked the DJ to stop the music and tapped the mic multiple times to get the attendees' attention.

"Graduates, we are nearing the end of the night!"

The crowd all groaned in disappointment in unison.

"Now, now! We are going to play one more song, but before that!" the teacher said with enthusiasm.

"We would like to announce your Prom King and Queen."

The crowd buzzed in excitement and anticipation.

"It is tradition that the King and Queen share the final dance, and so~" the teacher revealed an evelope from beneath the flap of his suit.

"Your 2015 Prom Queen is..." the crowd all tensed at the anticipation,

"Eun Yuri!"

The graduates clapped, as they had expected this. Yuri was insanely gorgeous, but quiet so she wasn't that popular. However, as you got to know her, she opens up and reveals a cute, playful personality, which resulted in her having a couple of friends. A lot of the boys tried confessing to her, but were kindly rejected as she wasn't that open for relationships.

Yuri shyly went up on stage, her beautiful scarlett red dress flowing behind her as she went up the steps, onto the platform. She bowed slightly as she accepted the crown from the teacher, and then faced towards the group of students, where she exposed a gorgeous smile. Her long, jet black hair striked against her pale skin, and the scarlett dress just depicted visuals that of a model.

The boys started buzzing about who would have the honour of taking her hand in the last dance of the night.

"And now, for you Prom King..." he took out the second paper in the envelope, and exclaimed,

"Kim Mingyu!"

The crowd collectively gasped, including Wonwoo, who's surprise and shock were clearly expressed on his face. Mingyu stood there as the crowd directed their eyes to him, and parted themselves, creating a pathway straight to the stage.

"Go, babe." Wonwo assured with a smile,

"You shouldn't keep a gorgeous girl waiting" he teased with a wink.

Mingyu smiled, and hesitantly went up to the stage. His tall lean body fitted by the sleek black suit received stares from girls, whose jaws slacked. Mingyu went up on stage, and looked at the teacher who was holding out the crown. He then looked to his right, where Yuri stood, the stage lights illuminating her, making her to appear angelic.

"Ah, sorry.." he said after he was handed a mic, in expectation that he would say a couple words about how he was feeling.

The crowd and teacher looked at him in confusion.

Mingyu shook his head politely at the crown, and then turned to Yuri who he apologized to.

The tall boy walked off stage and then walked to Wonwoo's side, and took his hand,

"The only person I'm giving my last dance to, is this nerdy Class Pres." Mingyu said to the teacher, a proud smile on his face.

The crowd started the break out in conversation about what had just happened,

"W-well then... This has never happened before," the teacher said, standing awkwardly on stage as he cleared his throat.

Suddenly, someone who was working to help out with Prom came on stage and handed the teacher a paper, and whispered something in his ear.

"Ah! So," he said, looking down at the paper,

"Your new, official Prom King, who was very close to Mingyu in votes is,

Han Jaesuk!"

Mingyu and Wonwoo held in their laughter at the mention of that ridiculous name.

Jaesuk got up on stage, proudly, still looking dashing and thus once again proving why all the girls ogled at him.

After the Prom Queen and King got off stage, the crowd resumed it's former volume and density of people. Mingyu and Wonwoo laughed at how awkwardly Jaesuk and Yuri were around each other, and at the distance between them.

The DJ played the final song of the night, which was a beautiful slow song. Mingyu stepped close to Wonwoo as he wrapped his arms around his waist, drawing the shorter closer as he wrapped his arms around Mingyu's neck. Their faces were close enough that their noses were touching. The masks were off, somewhere in their pockets. Mingyu stared into his boyfriend's eyes,

"You know," Mingyu started, and Wonwoo hummed in response,

"They make Prom this big deal... 'A dance you can't miss'!" Mingyu mocked, earning a low chuckle from the shorter.

"But, I don't think it's the night, or the decorations, or even the fanciness of it."

Wonwoo looked into Mingyu's eyes,

"I think it's the songs that play that make it special..." he said,

"I think it's the person you share the dances with that make Prom so magical." Mingyu said as he looked into Wonwoo's eyes, lovingly.

The couple swayed to the music, neither looking away from the other's eyes.

"Jesus, how did I get so freakin' lucky?" Wonwoo asked after a long moment of silence of just staring.

Mingyu smiled and said,

"There's not a day that goes by when I look at you, and not think the same thing."

Wonwoo smiled, and then closed his eyes as Mingyu slowly leaned in to place a sweet kiss on his lips.

Their kiss lasted for a while, as the beautiful, slow song continued to play in the background. Within the seconds that their lips remained locked, it felt as if they were the only 2 in the world.

Their faces parted and once again they stared into each others eyes. There was no space between their bodies as Wonwoo leaned his head on Mingyu's chest as they continued slow dancing, and Mingyu wrapped his arms tighter around his waist. Wonwoo chuckled,

"Your heart's beating a little fast, Prom King."

"Well, I can't help it." Mingyu said and then smiled sweetly,

"It's hard to keep your heart from racing when you're with the one you love."

Wonwoo chuckled again,

"I love you." he said.

Mingyu gave a victorious smile,

"I love you, too."

The night ended as the last song finished. Mingyu walked Wonwoo home, then returned to his lonely apartment.

After showering and changing, Wonwoo settled into bed. He stared at the ring on hi right pinky. He was reminded of the awkward situation his mom created earlier on in the evening. He slightly blushed and chuckled,

You know, I may have gotten mad at my mom for mentioning marriage..

He thought to himself,

But, there is honestly no one else I would accept a ring from.

Wonwoo smiled as he thought about his Prom experience, and drifted off to sleep at ease.

Chapter 36: Hai Zen! I spent a few days to finish this story. And I realllyyyyy love this!!! How the story goes sweetly, then comes the problem that makes me a little scared when Mingyu fights. I like the portrayal of Wonwoo's character. It doesn't feel forced, just flows naturally. And I'm reading this in 2022 which made it easy for me to match their young and current images. Lastly, thank you for presenting a beautiful story!!
And, I was wondering where is Seungkwan? I didn't find him in every chapter. Just curious.
