JB had wanted to speak with Summer and apologize for what had happened, but Mark knew she was in no condition to talk. Instead he asked for her permission if JB could visit her tomorrow, and she nodded. He had received a text from Youngjae that Summer had left her phone at Jacksons place, so JB might as well use the phone as an excuse to visit her.
Without much of a choice, JB agreed and hung up.
They caught a cab back to her place. After she told the driver her address, the rest of the ride grew quiet and somber.
Mark had a bunch of questions he wanted to ask her, but she didn’t open one bit throughout the ride. His eyes would follow where she was looking at, but there would be nothing there. It was as if she was in another world, and he couldn’t find a way to pull her back out. She was an empty carcass that had no living energies residing in her. Even her eyes held a blankness to them.
He couldn’t imagine what kind of questions Jackson may have asked to provoke her to run off like that. She was generally a very tough girl who didn’t seem to be bothered by many things, but whatever Jackson said, must have offended her greatly. Mark bit onto his tongue, and stared out the window.
Tiredness was finally creeping up on him and he yawned. From the corner of his eyes, he could see that her attention was on the passing streets. He turned and stared at her, with questions in his eyes. I wonder what she’s thinking about right now… I wonder if she’s even thinking about anything at all. What’s your story, Summer? What happened to you?
Once they arrived at her place, the two of them got out and stood in front of her house. He knew he couldn't let her go just yet.
“Sometimes when I get panic attacks, I go on a jog or I sit by the river and watch the fishes swim around,” Mark blurted out quietly.
Summer who was about to say her goodbyes, looked up at him unexpectedly.
“Now and again, I pretend I’m the fish that’s swimming away, and people would look at me and they think I’m crazy, but I ignore them… I just practice breathing and focus on the fish in the river,” admitted Mark. He couldn’t understand why he was confessing this to her, but he felt like she should know.
“You’ve always seem so confident, it’s hard to imagine someone like you getting panic attacks,” whispered Summer.
“Everyone has their own problems in life; we just deal with it differently. Sometimes all you really need to do is just breathe in, breathe out, and then you’re okay.”
She gazed at him with a soft expression. The trance that she had been stuck in was finally fading away, and she felt her heart quiver in her chest. She let out a few deep breaths, before letting her shoulders deflate. She really did feel better.
Mark could see a gentle twinkle return to her eyes, and knew that she was okay again.
“See,” Mark breathed out with her. His lips tugged up into a big smile, and so did hers. “All you need to do is breathe and focus on one thing. Anything. Just focus on it and you’ll be okay.”
Summer couldn’t believe the words that she was hearing from at the moment were coming from Mark. The last person that she thought would ever help her was helping her right now with her anxiety. His usual dark demeanor was nowhere in sight, instead, the boy with red hair in front of her seemed warm and genuine.
“…Thanks, Mark.” Seeing him smile, caused something to flutter inside of her. She felt herself smiling as well. “I appreciate it.”
“You’re welcome. Keep this a secret between us, okay? None of the guys know I go and talk to fishes. They’re going to make fun of me and I will never h
