"Mum," Yoorin sighed down the phone that night, "I said I'd be home for Christmas, but I still want to spend some time with Jeongmin, too."
She nodded along to what her mother had to say, not bothering to really pay much attention since she had heard it all before. "Mum, I think you've forgotten how old I am, all of this is perfectly normal. Stop worrying, okay? I'm hanging up, bye." She paused to listen to the rest of what her mother had say, "Yes, yes, okay. I love you, too. Bye."
She locked her phone and threw it onto the bed and blew a raspberry at it.
Hearing the sound of the front door clicking open, she turned her head towards it and smiled. "You're back," she said, but then her smile fell when she saw his expression.
Jeongmin rushed over and wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her hair. Yoorin was patient, she knew what to do when he was like this; she waited until he was ready to talk. Because eventually, he would always talk. He didn't like hiding things from her and would always tell her everything and he asked for nothing more but for her to do the same.
Their relationship was far from a perfect one, but it was definitely a healthy one and that was mainly because Jeongmin was good at communication and he was really big with trust. He knew everything, about her past and everything she had been through so there were no lies in the relationship whatsoever.
"What's wrong?" she asked him when he pulled back.
He took in a deep breath, "Yoorin, you trust me, right?"
She nodded wordlessly.
"Good," he let out of sigh of relief, pressing his lips onto her forehead.
"Is everything okay?" She frowned as she watched him walk into the kitchen, absentmindedly opening draws and cupboards, looking like he wasn't really searching for anything in particular.
"Huh?" he looked up and smiled when he saw her worried everything expression. "Of course, why wouldn't it be?"
She shrugged and walked over. "Well, if everything really is tip top then why don't we start making dinner?"
"Sounds great," he smiled at her.
The next day when Yoorin had woken up, the first thing she noticed was that the space next to her on the bed was empty. She sat up and looked around sleepily and realised that it was Saturday. He had work.
Jumping out of bed, she walked into the bathroom and hopped into the shower. She might as well spend the day being productive if she was going to be alone. Besides, it would be nice to visit her parents.
After she was dressed and all ready, she stepped outside the apartment and made way to her home. Walking through her old neighbourhood made her feel extremely nostalgic. She couldn't help but miss the little things. Things like waking up so early in the morning that the sun wasn't even up yet and grabbing the uniform that was laid on the chair. The sound of her alarm clock. The carved initials on the desks in school. Listening to the same song over and over again until getting sick of it on the way to and from school. Just things, really.
When her hand landed on her front gate, she looked up and blinked at her balcony. Then her eyes traveled to the oak tree and the way that a certain person had used it after confessing that he no longer wanted her.
She shook herself. Why were these thoughts sneaking its way into her mind? She didn't quite know but she had a tingling feeling that something explosive was going to happen.
Opening the gate, she walked in and knocked on the front door. It was her father who opened the door.
"You haven't
