Wushu.
Memories of Her.
The days passed without Lay even realizing it, and very soon he realized how long it had been since he
had remembered anything new. He had hung out with his friends every day for the last two weeks
seeing as it was still holidays, and not once had a memory of any kind come to him. Perhaps it was
because he was distracted. He hoped so, anyhow. He wouldn't know how to react if he were to never
remember anything more about his past life - forever suspended in the middle of two lives he knew
seldom about. He hadn't seen Amber at all in those two weeks, either.
Lay finished the last of his breakfast and decided to give her a call.
"Hello?" She picked up after the first few rings.
"Hey Amber, it's Lay!" He said cheerily.
"Lay! 'Sup man? You remember something?" she asked, suddenly sounding more lively. Lay chuckled
and shook his head, before realizing she couldn't see him.
"Nah, actually I haven't remembered anything for at least two weeks now." Amber could sense the
undertone of worry in his voice. "But I thought I'd call you to see if you wanted to hang out today? I haven't
seen you in ages!" Amber began to laugh from the other end of the line.
"Of course! What do ya wanna do?" Lay's expression became a blank one. He hadn't thought about what he
wanted to do, he almost never did because someone else always wanted to do something instead. "Lay?"
"Uh, I haven't planned anything..." He mumbled awkwardly. Amber laughed heartily.
"That's ok! Let's meet up first and then decide what we wanna do." Lay agreed and decided that they would
meet at the park. He hung up the phone and slipped on some shoes before heading out the door.
~*~*~
A few minutes by himself were spent deep in thought before Amber appeared in front of him, her
signature smile on her face. She wore a large yellow and grey hoodie with a red cap covering her
messy hair. She looked like she had just gotten out of bed - which coincidentally, she had.
"Hey man!" she greeted, rubbing the nape of her neck. "Sorry if I kept you waiting." Lay shook his
head and smiled.
"No need to apologize, I was only waiting for a couple of minutes." he replied. Amber nodded and
turned to look into the park further.
"Do you want to just go for a walk?" Lay asked. Amber stayed still for a little, still looking into the
park and nodded.
"Yeah, I think that's a good idea." she answered calmly. Lay didn't notice her different behaviour
and began to walk down a path next to Amber. They talked about life during the past two weeks,
the ups and downs, everything they had accomplished or were meaning to accomplish.
Their conversation was cut short however, when Amber stopped in her tracks, her arm stopping Lay
also. Lay looked over at her - about to ask what she was doing, when she held a finger to her lips,
signaling for him to stay quiet. She narrowed her eyes and looked into the bushes to their left, scanning
the trees for her target. When her eyes met with a pair of hostile feline-shaped eyes, she immediately
turned around to block Lay with her body as a large rock came flying towards them. Lay's eyes went
wide as he heard Amber grunt in pain, and saw a man emerge from the bushes.
"Yah! Why did you throw that rock at her?" Lay was never one to get angry, unless it was for his
friend's sake.
"Calm down big guy, it's not like I hit her where I wanted to; she turned around at the last second." Lay
let out a low growl and kept his eyes locked with the dangerous male's. Amber straightened her
posture and turned around to face the man, a vicious look also draping over her face.
"Get out." she growled dangerously. "We have no business with you." The man shook his head and
clicked his tongue.
"Not with you, no. With him?" he gestured to Lay with a lazy hand "That's another story." Lay was
confused and angry. Who was this guy? Why did he hurt Amber? And what business could he have with
him? Lay heard a sickening crack and whipped his head up, only to see the man standing in front of them
holding a bone that stood at least two metres long. He lifted it above his head and began to spin it,
moving it around his body with ease. Lay didn't want to know where the bone had come from, but he
recognised the style in which he was swinging it around himself. What happened next was either a
blessing or a curse, as Lay began to fade out of the imminent battle and into a memory.
As he and another man made their way around the side of the building with a very familiar girl, Lay began
to suspect that they weren't supposed to be there. He looked over to the girl, noticing her white dress was
stained with blood near the bottom. He didn't panic though; it was as if he already knew that the blood was
there. She seemed ok, too.
The gardens around this part were beautiful to say the least. Blooming red roses stuck out to Lay the most, but
what really caught his eye was a familiar silver rose locket clasped around the girl's neck.
Lay peered around the corner to see his friend Tao practicing Martial Arts in the back yard. He swung a long
wooden Wushu stick around his body in the most flawless and routined way he had ever seen. He remembered
once when he had asked Tao to teach him a little bit of Wushu in case he needed it to defend himself. Tao had
agreed eagerly, and spent the whole day teaching his attacks, defenses and counters he could use easily. It
was safe to say that Lay was a force not to be reckoned with. Tao suddenly looked over at Lay, his face
turning serious and dark. He dropped the wooden pole he had been wielding and sped over towards Lay,
leaving him with a surprised and almost fearful gaze as he wondered what he had done wrong. His doubts
were soon answered as he saw where Tao had run to.
"What happened!?" He said desperately, his eyes darting back and forth over the girl as he gripped her
shoulders. "Who did this!?"
Meanwhile, other more violent events were taking place.
Himchan swung at Lay with his weapon made of bone, attempting to hit the boy while his eyes were
glazed over and he was technically unconscious. Amber jumped in front of him, her arms placed upright
to block the attack, taking the force of the swing with her forearms. Himchan gave a playful smirk, and
twisted the pole around so that the other end was flying towards Lay's head. He was definitely enjoying
this. Amber dropped to the ground and flipped herself over, balancing her upper body on her hands while
her left foot came up to kick the pole away from him. The pole changed directions again and again, each
time Amber alternating her feet upwards to block it. Eventually she kicked the pole out of his hands, and it
flew back into the bushes he had emerged from. They both watched it move, Amber getting back onto her
feet and rushing towards Himchan. She held his collar tightly, slamming him onto the ground with one
swift takedown.
"Leave us alone, you got that?" she growled. Himchan laughed loudly, placing a hand on the back of her
head, his finger digging into the hollow at the base of her neck. She felt a sudden strike where his finger
was placed and then she fell forward - out cold. Himchan shoved her off like a doll and stood up smoothly
using his core muscles. He made his way over to a distant Lay, raising a fist as he approached the helpless boy.
But as he brought it down to strike Lay - the latter moved to the side - his right hand coming up to grip
Himchan's wrist. His head hung low, the member of B.A.P couldn't see Lay's eyes past his thick brown hair.
"Don't hurt my friends." He said, his voice rasping with strained control. "You'll have to deal with me."
Immediately Lay twisted Himchan's arm in a movement faster than lightning making the latter cry out in
agony as his bones cracked from the pressure. Himchan fell to the ground, clutching his arm and crying
out, more in shock that anything. His research had told him that Lay was docile; calm and peaceful in
everyway. Whoever had collected that data had obviously never hurt his friends before.
While Himchan was distracted, Lay scooped Amber up in his arms and made his escape.
~*~*~
There was no where else he could really take her except for his own house. He wasn't even sure what he
was just witnessed himself, but he almost knew it was something to do with his memories. The hospital
was out of the question, seeing as he knew what had happened was far from normal or human. He didn't
know what the man had done to Amber, but he knew she would wake up with rest. He decided that she
could stay in his room; he would sleep on the couch until she was better. He didn't mind doing that, it was
for a friend after all.
Lay tucked the blankets around her and rested a hand on her forehead. Her temperature was normal, that
was a good sign. In the back of Lay's mind he felt as if he knew something about health. It was the slightest
sense of familiarity, but it was there nonetheless. He felt his hands grow warmer, it almost seemed as if they
were illuminated with energy - but Lay didn't notice. It was getting late now, Amber had been resting for a
long time, and Lay decided to go and set up his own bed. Tossing a few spare duvets on the couch with a
couple of extra pillows, Lay got comfortable and turned the T.V on at a low volume. The late news was on,
currently finishing a story of river pollutants in the north. The next news story made Lay cringe, and
questions of all kind filled his mind. Who had seen him and the man fighting in the park? Who had taken a
photo the moment the man was about to strike Lay on the top of the head? Who had sent it in to the local
news channel? Why had the person in question not helped him? The light from the T.V screen washed the
room with a pale light. The picture on the screen was definitely Lay, there was no doubt about it. Amber
wasn't featured, but the man was. A cruel reminder of fate with the words "Thug activity heightened: Civilians
are to take extra caution" scrolling across the bottom of the screen. Lay flicked the T.V off, feeling sick with
the knowledge that now his friends probably knew of what had happened. Sick because someone had taken a
picture instead of helping him. Sick because now there were other potentially dangerous people who might
have the same motives as the man he had met today, or the gang of thugs he had encountered a few weeks ago.
Lay sighed and closed his eyes tightly. He just prayed that Amber would wake up in the morning.
