At the End of the Line.
Memories of Her.
He asked him once. Twice. Again and again. Eventually, he caved.
"Wookie, don't you need a disguise too?" Lay asked, tucking his hair into a cap and under a hood. He slipped on a
pair of dark shades and a face mask, and offered Ryeowook a second pair of glasses. Ryeowook had one place he
liked to go when he was troubled, there was only one place he ever felt at ease. But it was different if he went alone.
Very different. Ryeowook hated going there alone because it made him think too much, and he would always end up
leaving more miserable than when he had arrived. He used to go there with Kyuhyun, but that was before everything
became the way it did. Before Ryeowook found out the man he had a secret love for was trying to kill his best friend.
"Nah, even if they do see me, they have no reason to be suspicious. I don't hang out with you all the time!" He laughed.
Lay nodded with a smile and slipped his shoes on. He left a note for Amber and Hyoyeon telling them where they
were going and not to worry. Amber wouldn't come out of her room anyway, not for a very long time. And Hyoyeon
would return to the house later that evening.
~*~*~
The setting sun's golden rays made the entire landscape seem golden and like an oil painting in many ways. The view
was breathtaking, and was captured perfectly in Ryeowook's favourite place. The top of a cliff - not a massive one,
but not particularly small either - that overlooked the city and its vast array of nature that surrounded it. Ryeowook
sighed and kicked his feet out, gazing wistfully out over the city.
"Can you believe it?" Ryeowook asked. Lay hummed and leaned forward to look at Ryeowook.
"Believe what?" He asked. As Ryeowook was about to answer, Lay's phone began to ring. Lay looked at the caller ID
and hung up. It was only Hyoyeon, probably calling to see when the two of them would be home. Ryeowook's troubles
were more important now.
"Why didn't you answer it?" Ryeowook asked, not making eye contact with Lay.
"You're more important right now." Lay replied. "Continue." Ryeowook gave a gentle smile and leaned back on his hands.
"It's just that I can't believe that Kyuhyun could... I mean I've known him for at least a year or so, he's never been anything
like he was that night in the park." he paused. "I must have fallen in love with another man back then." Lay pat his friends
back.
"What you fell in love with was no man." Lay looked at his feet. "I'm really sorry though... You're a good man, Kim
Ryeowook." Ryeowook smiled weakly and looked over the horizon as the sun set further.
"I just wish I knew... What happens in the future." he said after some time. "The worst thing is not knowing you know."
Lay nodded in agreement.
"Or not remembering..."
"I'm sorry about all of that." Ryeowook clenched his fist suddenly. "I really am. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions
so quickly, and I should have listened to you first." Lay shook his head.
"You think I'm still angry about that?" He asked with a small smile. "That's all in the past." Ryeowook stayed silent for
a long time.
"Promise me something, ok?" he asked, staring forward.
"What?" Lay asked. Ryeowook remained staring forward.
"Promise me that no matter what, you'll never forget me." Ryeowook said softly. "Never." Lay smiled and nodded.
"I promise. I could never forget you."
"One day..." Ryeowook began. "One day when I'm an old man I wanna come visit you wherever you are and do
something really old together! Like play bingo, or talk about Grandkids or..." He paused, hesitating. "Or maybe
just even coming back here. Sitting here and talking like we are now. That's something really worth living for.
You're one of my best friends Lay, and I won't ever forget you either." Lay smiled in return, and the two locked
pinky fingers as the last rays of the sun began to vanish. Ryeowook checked the time on his phone, only to see
one missed call from Hyoyeon. He shrugged it off and decided he would call her later.
As Ryeowook looked up, he saw a figure tramping through the trees to get to the top of the cliff. He froze, his
hands shaking and his voice unable to make coherent words.
"What's wrong?" Lay asked. Ryeowook looked him in the eyes for a good three seconds, before pulling him to the
edge of the cliff. There were pieces of rock he could use to climb down with, and Ryeowook pointed to them,
shushing him silently.
"What's going on?" Lay whispered.
"Just trust me ok?" Ryeowook panicked. "Just climb down there and hide in the bushes. Don't make a sound, ok?"
Ryeowook stared with great fear into Lay's eyes, and Lay could see he was being serious. He nodded an began to
climb down the cliff, which was no easy feat. It stood at least 5-6 metres tall until the next drop, climbing down
backwards was harder than Lay expected. It was only once he reached the bushes and hid safely that he realized
why Ryeowook had been so desperate to hide him.
"Long time no see..." Kyuhyun muttered under his breath. "How you been doing, eh Wookie?" Ryeowook
answered casually, hiding his fear well.
"Not much, I came up here by myself to do some thinking." Kyuhyun smirked.
"Oh yeah?" he asked. "Then who did I see you with earlier today?"
"My cousin is in town." Ryeowook replied, brushing the dust from his pants. "I kinda wanna do some thinking
on my own, would it be ok if you..."
"Sure." Kyuhyun replied. "If you're willing to move away from that cliff." Ryeowook froze. Did he know Lay
was down there?
"Why? Do you wanna stand here?" Ryeowook forced a laugh and scratched the back of his neck.
"Don't ing play dumb with me." Kyuhyun's eyes turned dark. "Just because you have some idiotic crush on
me doesn't mean I have an inch of mercy towards you. If you don't move, I'll kill you." Ryeowook stiffened, his
hands clenching and unclenching. He straightened his posture and stared Kyuhyun straight in the eyes. For once,
he wouldn't be that pathetic little boy Kyuhyun had wrapped around his finger.
"No." He replied. "I'm not moving." Kyuhyun raised his hand, the palm of it inches away from Ryeowook's face.
The space around his hand began to waver.
"I'll give you to the count of three." he growled, taking a step forward. "One." Ryeowook shuffled backwards a
few centimetres. He wouldn't let any harm come to Lay.
"Two." He said, and again Ryeowook didn't move out of the way. Kyuhyun narrowed his eyes.
"You're an idiot. Surely you value your own life?"
"It's not that I don't value my own." Ryeowook said coldly. "It's that I value others more."
"It's like I said." Kyuhyun scoffed. He lowered his hand to Ryeowook's chest and shot a powerful burst of energy
into his chest, causing him to cough out a large amount of blood from his lungs, stumbling backwards to fall off
of the cliff into the bushes below. He lay still on the ground, laying on his chest with his back rising and falling
shakily, and barely at all. Kyuhyun was just about to jump down after him, when the blaring of sirens wailed in
the distance.
"." Kyuhyun frowned. "Someone must have known I was here." He stood up, looking towards the roads, seeing
the flashing lights speeding up towards the very bottom of the cliff. "It would only waste time if I were caught here.
They'd realize I wasn't human and end up containing me for tests." Kyuhyun smirked and jumped off the other side
of the cliff, sliding down the side of the cliff face on the gravel. He knew he had won, regardless of who he had
gotten. Lay would get the message.
~*~*~
"Ryeowook... Rye... Oh My God!" Lay was in a serious panick, seeing what Kyuhyun had done to him. His hands
shook as he tried to touch his friend, to help him. The fall had broken a lot of his bones, including a few ribs. Blood
was leaking out of Ryeowook's mouth as he opened and shut it, trying to talk to Lay. Ryeowook knew the odds were
against him when he defied Kyuhyun. He knew that he would probably end up dead or close to it. He did it all for his
best friend. Lay shushed him, tears building in his eyes. "N-No, Don't talk!" He rolled Ryeowook carefully onto his
back and propped him up against the side of the cliff. Lay rolled his sleeves up and brought his hands to Ryeowook's
chest, ready to heal him. Ryeowook shook his head and pushed Lay's hands away.
"No..." He whispered. "Don't..."
"I'm going to heal you." Lay said, his voice shaking. He brought his hands up again and Ryeowook pushed his hands
away once again.
"No, no you're not." Ryeowook said strongly.
"What are you saying, let me heal you!" Lay's voice began to crack as his tears came through. Ryeowook didn't have
much time left.
"You know what will happen if you do, Kyuhyun could still be up there. If you heal me he'll track you down and kill
you."
"I don't care about me! You're dieing, Wookie!" Tears spilled down his cheeks and onto Ryeowook's paling face.
"I can't let you..."
Lay didn't even realize he had fallen unconscious until he saw his the boys he had remembered.
Luhan pulled her hand down to him, kissing her knuckles softly. Lay wasn't jealous, he knew it was a different kind
of affection.
"Don't cry Mei..." he smiled gently. "I want to hear you laugh again.. I love it when you laugh..." More tears spilled
from Lay's eyes as he realized what he had to do. He dragged himself over to Luhan, picking the boy up in his
arms and resting his head on his lap.
"Who is that?" Luhan asked. The later he left it, the worse he would get.
"Shh. It's me." Lay said softly. "I'm going to heal you." Luhan froze, mouth slightly agape.
"No." He said imperatively. "No, you're not."
"What are you saying? Let him heal you!" The girl cried in hysterics, but felt a hand rest on her shoulder, as if to tell
her to stop. It was Tao.
"...It's not that simple..." He muttered, tears b but not falling. She were about to ask what he meant, when
Luhan began to talk again.
"Lay, you know what will happen if you heal me from this state. You can't do this!" Blood began to run down the
corners of his mouth, and Lay shook his head. He paused for a split second before turning around to the girl, knowing
what he had to do.
"____... Do you remember what I told you when we were in hiding?" He asked. "About my powers?" She thinned
your lips and nodded, tears dipping down her cheeks. She remembered how he told her that his power needs time
to build up again after using it, and how it erases a part of his memory equal to the size of the power he used. She
also remembered how if he used too much at once, his powers would not grow back, and he would lose them - and
end up as a mortal.
To heal a life is to use up a lifetime of powers. To use up a lifetime of powers is to lose a lifetime of memories.
And while Lay remembered how he healed his friend and saved his life,
Ryeowook stopped breathing.
And the two lie in the darkness together waiting for the sun to rise and find them,
But one would never see morning again.
