Pressure.
Memories of Her.
The money Lay had received made him realize how long it had been since he really went out and
did anything by himself. Usually the only time he would go out and do anything was if the others
invited him out, but with the tension in their relationship Lay couldn't see that happening any time
soon. He slipped a few bills into his wallet and tucked it into the front pocket of his backpack.
Usually he would invite the others out with him if they didn't already, but now he just needed some
time alone to think. Everything that was going on with him right now was more confusing than
anything he had ever had to face, and what was worse was that he was the only one who knew
how he felt. There was no one else he could talk to or ask, he had no idea how to deal with his
situation.
Lay remembered back to the day before when Ryeowook had come to his house to apologise, and
more importantly to seek some sort of therapy from getting something off his chest. It was unlike
his friend to be so anxious or fearful. Something big was definitely going on in his life, but Lay
would wait until he was ready to tell him. He could never pressure his friends. He slipped on a jacket,
as he noticed a slight chill in the air, and slung his backpack over his shoulder, heading out the door.
As soon as he stepped outside, Lay felt the brisk morning air on his cheeks. He locked the door and
hopped down each step, putting his purple headphones over his ears burning from the cold. It was
strange, this cold weather, considering the last few days had been so nice. He began to hum to
himself, his voice blending into the refreshing morning atmosphere. It was calming, peaceful.
Lay had decided to go for a coffee at his favourite cafe, one he often visited during his first few
days in the neighborhood because it had such a nice smell. Cakes, coffee, and other baked goods
welcomed Lay through the small push door as he smiled contently, stepping into the homely cafe.
The waitress smiled when she saw him, recognizing him instantly.
"Good morning Lay-ssi, how are you?" she asked genuinely. Lay gave a soft smile and bowed
lightly when he replied.
"I've been well, thank you."
"Have you settled in nicely? We haven't seen you in so long!" Her voice was calm, but there was
an undertone of deep concern. She had heard through the grape-vine of what had happened. Or
what he thought had happened.
"I'm all settled now, thank you for asking." He replied with equal calmness. "I'll make sure to visit
more often from now on." She gave a polite, but relieved smile and showed him to a table, taking
out a memo pad and pen from her olive green apron.
"We have a new item on our menu since you last came here, do you want to try it?" She asked. Lay
looked up with a hint of excitement in his eyes, his mouth slightly open. He nodded, a smile growing
on his face.
"Yeah, I'll take it!" He said, trying to seem like he was still very much calm and collected. She
scribbled down his order and turned to walk back to the kitchen, her canvas shoes padding gently
across the floor. Lay looked around the cafe, watching as small children talked to their families, as
young lovers fed each other brightly coloured cakes, as old couples bickered about what was more
expensive than this or that. He loved to watch the world pass by around him. He loved the feelings
that came with living.
It took a good 15 minutes before the waitress came back with his dish. He couldn't see exactly what it
was because it still had a metal lid over top of the bowl.
"You'll have to leave that over the top for another couple of minutes or else the steam will burn you."
She said. Lay's face dropped a little. He was so excited to see what it was, but he had to wait. The
waitress noticed his face, and gave a troubled frown. She put a hand on his shoulder, suddenly
wearing a smile.
"Hey, do you wanna hear a joke?" She asked, trying to cheer him up. Lay grew a small smile, looking
up at her from his seat. He nodded, his smile growing a little more. She looked from side to side
cautiously. She could get in trouble for wasting time chatting with the customers rather than working.
Leaning in, she began to speak above a whisper.
"Why did the golfer wear two pairs of pants?" She asked. Lay slapped his forehead with his palm,
realizing how lame her joke was. He closed his eyes and started laughing quietly and shaking his head,
not at the joke but at her. She took his actions as a sign to continue.
"In case he got a hole in one!" She laughed, slapping her thigh in a laugh riot. Before Lay even had a
chance to react, he felt himself being pulled out of his consciousness, and into an all too familiar
dizziness. He questioned himself, of all things he could remember, what could be as lame as the joke
that triggered it? His question was answered within mere seconds.
"Is it just me... Or are there, clouds, up there?" Kai stood facing a window, looking out to the overcast
sky. Lay shook his head in pity for the girl that stood next to him, but not too close. She sighed in
frustration. Kai had been issued with what the guardians called 'numbing medicine' because it numbed
everything within ones physical control, and allowed for quicker recovery time of powers. Kai was
subject to one of the rare side-effects, where his brain released a chemical that made him go, as Chanyeol
had put it, 'a little strange'.
"Yes Kai, there are clouds up there." the girl tried again to take back her frilly, pink bra from the swaying
idiot. He held it above her head and giggled.
"Wonder if this can fly to the clouds up there..?" Kai turned around to face the window again, waving the
bra around in his hand. Before the girl could even open her mouth to protest, Kai hooked the elastic over
his thumb and pinged it out the window, laughing as he watched it disappear. The girl's face was bright
red as she grabbed Kai roughly by the shirt collar. The momentum made the two of them swing around,
so that she was now nearer the wall.
"Why did you do that!?" She yelled, her grip tight. Kai laughed like a tone-deaf chihuahua and slumped
forward onto her shoulder, his face looking like he was about to burst into an uncontrollable laughter
at any second.
"You reeeaaally wanna know?" He asked, snickering to himself. She nodded with gritted teeth, looking like
she was about to punch something. He became very silent, whispered something in her ear, and began to
laugh like a pterodactyl until she pushed him away roughly, groaning in frustration.
"Kai! She yelled. "Stop making no sense!" Kai's laughter continued to fill the room, echoing madly off the
walls.
"This is usual for the numbing treatment." One man said. "He does stupid things for nonsensical reasons."
The girl let out a defeated groan and looked over to where Kai previously stood. Her face creased as a
familiar pair of pants came falling from the ceiling.
"Oh God, where is he now?" Xiumin asked, holding a hand to his forehead.
"It's ok!" Kai cried unco-ordinatedly. "I was wearing two pairs of pants!" The girl looked up cautiously,
squinting. Kai was right, he was actually wearing two pairs. "I~ lost my pants!"
"Why would you wear two pairs?" The girl cried.
"I'm a golferrrrr..." Kai gurgled between laughs. "I wear two pairs in case I get a hole-in-one!" He burst
into a fit of uncontrollable laughter, slapping his thighs and falling to the floor, seemingly un phased.
The noise Kai made from his fall seemed to snap Lay back into reality, still slightly dizzy but awake nonetheless.
He held a hand to his forehead to steady his breathing and vision, before noticing the green sticky note stuck
to the lid of his bowl. Lay picked it up and read it aloud;
"I'm sorry if that joke offended you somehow, you didn't reply to me for so long and just kept staring straight
ahead that I presume you're angry with me for something. I hope you don't just throw this note away..." Lay
paused, looking around the room for the waitress. She was nowhere to be seen. He felt bad that she thought
he was angry at her. He stayed still without talking to her whilst he was remembering, it must have looked like
he was ignoring her. He looked back to the note and continued to read.
"Your food was getting cold so I decided to bring you another bowl, on me! Please forgive me?" Lay crumpled
the note and put it in his pocket, sighing distractedly. He wished he knew where she was so he could explain
that he wasn't angry, but then he didn't want to tell her the truth either. There were enough people who thought
he was crazy. Lay opened the lid and took some food out without even looking at it. He was still distracted by
his memory and the note.
The second the food hit his lips, a smile grew over them. He didn't need a flashback this time, the memory was
instant. Lay had eaten this meal so many times he was surprised he didn't recognise the smell straight away.
Lay looked over to the kitchen to see if he could spot the chef, but there was no luck. He had a hunch.
There was only one person he knew could make Kimchi Spaghetti exactly how he liked it,
And that was D.O.
