Chapter 15

What Are You? [Inspired By EXO's Wolf]

Luhan blinked  his eyes a few times, adjusting to his surroundings before realizing where he was. He was still outside, lying on the cold, rough ground. His head was pounding and his stomach felt a stabbing pain. He let out a painful cough, blood spurting into his hands and between his fingers. Luhan felt around his pockets and took out his phone. He had  been out cold for about a few hours. Now it was still only 8pm, and Luhan stumbled to get on his feet, forgetting about the groceries that he was going to pick up from the market.

Luhan's fingers and legs were shaking, his body weak from the impact. He didn't recall what really happened, only a man coming up to him, and getting striked in the stomach and head. He remembered his head crashing against the ground but everything afterwards was just pitch black. Luhan coughed again, letting out another round of blood, and suggested that he wasn't in the state of going home. Instead he headed in the other direction, towards the nearest hospital. Trying to gain as little attention as possible, Luhan tried his best not to make his limping so noticable, and brushed his hair with his fingers to the site to cover the dried gash on his forehead.

Thankfully, not many paid him any attention and were too busy heading to where ever they were going. The sign of the hospital was slowly getting larger, he could see it just a block away. The front of the hospital was crowded by a group of trailing people that were following a patient who had just been lifted out of the ambulence and towards the emergency room. To avoid the pushing and crying crowd, Luhan decided to turn on the corner and take the side entrance.

As he was inching to the side door, Luhan caught a glimpse of a group of people crowded in a patients room. He squinted and realized that it was D.O. You and the rest of his 'friends' were surrounding him, laughing, cracking jokes. D.O seems to have healed a lot, and would probably be discharged in a while. You were sitting at the side of D.O's bed, telling him about the things that were going on at school and everything that he missed. You had just been back from staying after school and wanted to pay D.O a visit.

Luhan watched you and the others for a good five minutes, watching how close you've bonded with his friends and how he suddenly felt so distant from his own friends. He shook his head to get his mind off of it, instead thinking twice about going to the hospital and ended up going  home. It's not like I wont heal in a few days anyways, he thought.

Luhan trudged all the way home pulling out the first aid kit to tend to his wounds. Washing his scrapes out stung, and Luhan let out a yelp every time he touched it. He put ointment on it and bandaged the cut, hoping that it would be gone soon. I cant tell anyone about what happened today, it'll only stir memories of the pain I caused. Luhan turned the shower faucet as hot as it could go and pulled his shirt up over his head. He gaped at the sight of the purple and blue bruises all over his chest.

There was a large bruise along the side of his stomach. The memory flashed in his mind. The sight and feeling of the metal bar striking him in the stomach, causing him to double over in pain. Luhan gently at the bruise, flinching at the amont of pain. He was surprised that there hadn't been blood, even though his skin looked like it was about to give out to the pulsing blood.

Luhan stepped into the steaming shower and began scrubbing his body all over, careful not to work to roughly on his wounds. He closed his eyes and let the water spill over his head and down his face, embracing the nice warm feeling that he hasn't felt in a while. He stood in the shower for a good ten minutes, letting the soap rinse off on its own.

Luhan stepped out of the shower, drying himself off, pulling his clothes on and wrapped the towel around his head. He stood by his bed, glancing over at the photo frrame. Kris. Why are you gone when I need you the most? Luhan sat on his bed, remembering the look on your face. How happy you were when you were with D.O and everyone else. He couldn't help but feel jealous. Jealous at the fact that he couldn't face you in person. Not yet. It was still too soon, and Luhan was still afraid that you would give him the same terrified look that you had on your face after the incident.

You looked like a puppy that was trying to run away from an angry master, backing up slowly and carefully before turning and making a break for it. Luhan pulled the pillow over his face, angrily shouting as loud as he could, knowing that even if he was screaming on the top of his lungs, no one would hear him past all the muffling.

The next morning Luhan woke up with the birds outside loudly chirping. It was a sunny morning, but despite how nice it was outside, Luhan still felt disgusting. The full effects of last night had developed and his body ached all over. He could barely move, if even stand up. Even so, there was no point in getting up, since he wasn't going to go back to school and face anybody. They probably haven't forgiven him and showing up in this condition would attract attention.

If someone was going to stop the masked men from bothering Luhan and his friends anymore, he would be the one to handle it on his own. Luhan didn't want any of his friends to get in the way of this with the risk of hurting someone else again. He had to make sure you weren't there either. Luhan was worried about seeing you frightened again, he didn't want to see you like that, looking at him like he was some foreign creature.

In class, you stared yet again at the emptiness next to you. You've lost count of the days that Luhan hasn't been at school  and figured that he wasn't going to come back any time soon. You weren't particularly mad at Luhan anymore, he was mature and you knew that he could handle everything on his own. And the glowing red eyes that you saw. Well, it could've just been a hallulcination or something, and there was nothing wrong with Luhan. Either way, you missed him too much and wished he would just come back to class.

Tao frowned at the back of your head, noticing how you kept staring at Luhan's empty desk, and shook his head in sadness. Even though they were mad at Luhan, they didn't expect him to just disappear like that. For all he knew, Luhan could be in danger, and not at home, where everyone thought he was. Luhan was his friend, and even though bad things happen, they always learn to forgive each other and move on.

Kai on the other hand was less forgiving. He had stopped coming to school for a while too, coming to class on and off whenever he felt like it so the teacher didn't think he just disappeared into thin air. He was in a small alley near school, kicking the trash can and watching it tip over and spill out all its contents. An old drink from inside the trash can spilled out and all over Kai's shoes causing him to curse in frustration.

He had just visited D.O in the hospital, and every time he see's his face, he couldn't help but be mad at Luhan all over again. If he could be so careless about something like this, what would happen if a situation like this arose a second or third time? Kai didn't want anyone else to get hurt because of Luhan. His strength was immense and there was no telling what would happen next if he wasn't controlled. Unlike the rest of his friends, Kai wasn't ready to forgive Luhan.

For the next few days, Luhan continued what he was doing, sleeping at home all day and not going out. His bruises faded slightly but they still hurt a lot. His stomach was still in pain from getting hit and it wasnt getting any better. Each day though, he ended up steaking around to the back of the hospital, keeping an eye on D.O to make sure that he was okay. He seemed pretty fine, but every single day he went to visit, he saw you there too. You didn't look upset that Luhan was gone even though you felt it deep inside. Every day you would be there, sometimes with different people, but always one of Luhan's friends. You had grown so close to them that you spend almost all your time with them, since Luhan was gone.

Luhan couldn't help but feel his chest tighten at the jealousy. He knew that she didn't like them that way but it still made Luhan super jealous when it could've been him there, instead of Tao or Chanyeol, or whoever was there. Luhan snuck carefully between the bushes, making sure not to make any sudden movements that would make you notice him and he watched from a distance, every day. After staying for a good thirty minutes, you left D.O so that he could go to bed and Luhan mimicked your actions, leaving the hospital grounds before anyone would catch him.

To be honest, Luhan really missed your warm embraces, and even when you were standing or sitting next to him, it made him have a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Now that you were gone, Luhan lived cold, lonely, pointless nights. He wanted to do anything to get you back to him.

The next day Luhan went back to the hospital like a daily routine. This time, instead of showing up with one or two others, Luhan saw that you came with the rest of them - well minus Kai. This time though, he didn't hide behind the bushes and stood outside in the open. You were having a conversation with D.O as your eyes darted up and spotted Luhan outside. Your breathe was caught in your throat for a second. Is that really Luhan? You haven't seen him for about two weeks and you thought that he had died or gotten in trouble.

Luhan's eyes met yours and at that moment, he froze, eyes round as marbles and he turned to run away before she could catch up to you. Just then, somewhere in his body, Luhan felt a tug and his stomach started hurting all over again. He stumbled to the side of the wall, hiding himself in hopes that you would walk by and not notice him.

You didn't get up right away, knowing that if you stormed out at the moment, someone would've follwoed you to see what was going on. You held on tight and stayed for another five minutes, wrapping up the conversation. As everyone got up to leave, your feet were glued to the ground for a second, looking back out the window and realizing that Luhan was gone. You nodded at D.O and said goodbye once again before leaving with everyone else who was waiting for you at the door. You said your goodbyes to them as well as you headed in the opposite direction.

You stopped at the brick wall and sensed a presence nearby. Scanning the area you saw nothing, but then your head craned to the left, and there you saw a tired Luhan leaning against the wall. You creeped up slowly, careful not to startle him.

"Luhan.." you reached out with shaking figures. He looked up at you and he freaked out as if he saw a ghost. Luhan quickly turned away, hiding his scab and limped away from you as smoothly as he could while clutching as his aching stomach. Unfortunately for him, you caught on and knew that he was hurt. You didn't want to scare Luhan or yell at him so you just quietly followed where ever Luhan went, hoping that a while later he would stop and look at you so you could talk.

You followed Luhan for a good ten minutes with no luck of him stopping. Luhan's knees started to get weak and Luhan realized that he hadn't eaten yet. He was exhausted but kept persisting. You followed Luhan all over, through the alleys and up the stairs, hoping that you would be able to have a word with him. Out of no where, Luhan stumbled and crashed onto his knees. He doubled over while you stood in shock, running over to make sure that he was okay.

You held your hand on Luhan's head but didn't feel a fever or anything. You shook Luhan to get him to wake up but he wouldn't stir. Luhan slumped as the world dimmed from his eyes.
