Maknae's Limits

Two in a Million

“You’re having both a baby boy and a baby girl.” Doctor Jung smiled to the ex-idol, Samantha grinning while rubbing the boy’s shoulders.

Key let out a happy short laugh, smiling widely. “A-are you sure?”

“Pretty sure. See this here? She has her little hand on her stomach but you can see it, it’s a female. And the other is quite visible, a boy.” Doctor Jung pointed to some certain areas on the screen.

Key nodded, but truth to be told he couldn’t see . Those black and white alien-like silhouettes were too confusing for him to understand but he trusted the doctor. He couldn’t help but feel his chest burst in happiness, a delicious warm feeling running all over his body.

“Oh honey, don’t cry.” Samantha chuckled, petting Key’s hair affectionately.

Key wiped his eyes, biting on his lower lip, fighting the urge to burst out crying.

The nurse laughed, petting his head and squeezing his shoulders in support and Key knew he was too hormonal to fight his tears, and pressed his face against the woman’s stomach, sobbing.

The nurse chuckled and lowered herself a bit to the boy’s level and hugged him back. “I’m happy for you, little brat.”

Key said nothing, he kept crying on the woman’s large arms, feeling too happy for words.

A baby boy and girl…

This was too good to be true..! He knew how Jonghyun loved little girls; he would always squeeze their cheeks and pet their hair, grinning like an idiot…and now it became true. That dinosaur was having a girl like he always wanted with a baby boy as a bonus.

Key laughed, tears escaping his eyes, leaving wet trails on his cheeks. His twins…

His little twins…

He loved them.

“Yaaah! That interview was stupid! Why do they even come with those dumb questions?!” JungHee complained, throwing his black leather jacket on the couch as he entered the apartment after a long tiring day.

Jonghyun stared at the other’s jacket on the couch and remembered how Key hated when people left their things spread all over the apartment. Sighing, the singer grabbed the jacket and took it to the rapper’s room.

“Dumb or not, we need to answer them all.” Onew told him, his leader side taking charge.  “It’s our job.”

JungHee pouted and sat down on the couch, resting his feet on the small table in front of him. “They should shut up about Key though. Key this, Key that…! Can’t they get it that he left?!”

“Don’t speak a word about Key.” Taemin said in a small warning voice as he came from the kitchen.

“Oh? What’s up with you? Don’t think I never noticed your constant glaring. It’s not my fault your friend left, you know?”JungHee glanced at the younger boy.

The maknae pressed his teeth on each other in an annoyed manner and was about to talk when Onew cut him off in a warning tone. “Taemin…”

“I’m sorry hyung, but I have my limits too..!” The younger protested.

Junghee snorted and crossed his arms against his chest. “No, no, let the kid talk. I’m curious about what he has to say.”

Kid?!

Taemin walked to the rapper and pointed him an accusing finger, feeling his blood boil inside his veins. “I’m sick of you. You are careless about the band’s image! You miss practices and you’re always late…! We fought a lot, we worked hard for this band you know?!”

“The band’s image? I’m not going to stop smoking because of you.”JungHee stood up, facing Taemin with a frown.

Minho walked behind Taemin, giving the new member a warning look. The other rapper looked furious now and he couldn’t help but feel protective of Taemin, so he stood by his side, ready to shield him from any harsh actions the other could eventually try.

“I’m not telling you to stop, just keep it away from the media! And from our living room! I hate that smell!” Taemin lowered his voice a little, trying to remain calm. He hated fights himself…he wasn’t going to start one.

“What? The little princess can’t take a smoke?” JungHee laughed in amusement, pulling out a cigarette from his pocket.

You know what?

it.

PUNCH

“TAEMIN!” Minho and Onew shouted in surprise as the boy threw a punch at the rapper, who fell on the couch where he had previously sited on.

Jonghyun came running from his room, eyeing the band in confusion.

Junghee looked shocked, palming his nose, a trail of blood running down to his lip and Minho was grabbing Taemin by the waist, pulling him away from the hurt rapper. The younger was fuming, squirming to free himself from Minho’s strong grip.

Wait…no.

Taemin had actually hit someone?

Was that even possible?!

“I’M TIRED! I won’t let you ruin us!” The younger shouted, gnashing his teeth.

“Ruin you?! Have you ever thought that I’m here to fix you?!” The rapper stood up and Onew pulled him away from the raging maknae. “Stupid brat! Look what you’ve done to my nose!”

Taemin gasped. “Fix us?! We were great! He had Key, he-”

“And where is he now?! Perhaps SM thought it was for the best to bring some masculinity to this band and kicked the out!”JungHee snapped, leaving everyone paralyzed in shock.

“ENOUGH!” Jonghyun yelled on top of his lungs, his face now in an angry shade of red. “That’s enough!”

When JungHee jumped to the lead singer’s shout he knew he had went too far.

Onew looked around, Jonghyun had a dangerous murderer look in his eyes, Minho was glaring as well and Taemin looked like he was about to jump the rapper and scratch his face to the bone.

“Please leave.” Onew pointed to the corridor.

JungHee kept holding his broken nose, and gasped.“What? I just-”

“Leave! Please.” Onew half-shouted, looking into the rappers eyes, a serious expression never leaving his features. This boy had caused too much trouble for his own good…

“Seriously…”JungHee murmured, leaving the living room with large steps, slamming the door of his room quite loudly.

The four boys remained silent for a while, looking at the floor, lost in their own thoughts. After a minute Taemin looked up at the leader. “I…I’m sorry hyung…I couldn’t help it…”

“I don’t want fighting between us, you know that.” Onew murmured, scratching his head in a nervous habit.

“I know…I’m sorry…” The maknae bowed his head in shame.

Onew sighed and put a hand on Taemin’s shoulder, squeezing it. He gave him a small smile. “Don’t worry about it…I was getting angry myself as well.”

Taemin smiled back and brought his hand to cover his content grin. “It felt good…”

Onew let out a laugh and pulled Taemin to the kitchen, talking quietly.

Minho looked at Jonghyun worriedly and approached the quiet singer. “Hyung, are you okay?”

“I need to go out.” Jonghyun murmured, grabbing his jacket again and slamming the door after him.

The rapper sighed loudly, sinking his fingers on his hair, groaning.

Kibum had left them two big problems, one of them called Park JungHee and the other called Kim Jonghyun…

Sekyung couldn’t believe her luck.

This had to be destiny.

She had gotten out of work late because of her latest movie and was driving back home when her eyes caught a certain someone walking alone in the dark in the park.

It was a cold night and she was dressing only a sleeveless dress but she had to say hi.

This was her chance.

Pulling over, the actress made her best innocent face and followed the person that had stolen her heart and hid it somewhere out of her reach.

Trying not to look too excited, the girl tapped the boy’s shoulder and smiled. “Hey.”

Surprised, Jonghyun turned around looking at the girl with huge eyes. “Oh, hi. I didn’t hear you approaching.”

“I’d be surprised if you did, people say I walk like a cat.” She giggled, cocking her head to the side.

He gave her a small smile and looked around awkwardly, digging his hands inside his pockets.

Sekyung pouted. Why wasn’t he talking?

Why wasn’t he noticing her? She had a beautiful dress tonight..! With shoes matching the dress’s color!

“A-are you here all alone?” She smiled, trying to catch his eyes behind his bangs that were falling on his face. Why couldn’t he just cut his hair? It was too long…

“Yeah. Just…escaping the tension and clearing my mind a bit.” Jonghyun shrugged, smiling weakly.

“Is something wrong?” Sekyung asked, rubbing his arm, trying to show him how affectionate she could be. She needed to show him her good points…

Jonghyun chuckled nervously, squeezing his hands inside his pockets. He really didn’t feel like talking now… “Eh…I …it’s…complicated.”

“Band problems? I heard that you got a new member.” Sekyung commented, batting her lashes at the singer. She was cute, she was interesting, she was y, so why wasn’t he flirting with her yet? He couldn’t seriously still think of that gay boy right?

“The new member isn’t what we had in mind I guess.” He nodded.

The girl bit her lip. “Is he that bad?”

“He never thinks before talking, you know? He can hurt people really bad because of it.” Jonghyun remembered the boy’s harsh words to Taemin. Yes he was bad, he was nothing compared to Kibum. Kibum was…irreplaceable.

The girl faked interest and smiled. Time to test her luck. “I see…do you want a coffee?”

“Oh no, I didn’t bring my wallet with me..!” Jonghyun’s eyes widened, waving his arms negatively.

“I’ll pay! Let’s go!” She insisted, trying to grab his arm. Why was he so difficult? Any boy would say yes!

Jonghyun bowed a bit in a silent apology and took her hand off his arm. “Seriously, I’m sorry, I can’t have a girl paying for me, that’s wrong. Besides, I was just about to return home.” He smiled weakly.

Sekyung looked at the singer in disappointment and rubbed her skinny arms, trying to warm them. Wasn’t he going to give her his jacket?

The girl smiled again and rubbed her arms once more. He just kept looking.

He really wasn’t noticing that she was cold..?

The actress then smiled and decided to let it go. Maybe he was off tonight. Tired maybe. “Oh…can I see you a next time then?”

Jonghyun’s eyes widened again. No, he wasn’t ready for this. Was she asking him out on a date?

No, there was no way; his heart was too hurt to let someone try to enter it again. “Sekyung…you know I-”

“It’s a friendly invitation. Just for a coffee. Is something wrong with that?” The actress made a confused face, pouting her lips.

“…I guess not.” He murmured, remembering how Key used to pout too. He never pouted to plead for something though, he would only pout when he was either bored or bothered with something, it was the cutest thing ever…

“Okay then. I’ll talk to you soon then. Oh, want a ride?” Sekyung smiled again, pointing to her car, not too far away.

“It’s okay, I like to walk.” Jonghyun shook his head, already turning to leave.

Sekyung pouted even more. “Hum…ok. Goodnight then.”

Entering her car, Sekyung watched as the boy walked slowly down the street, hugging the jacket against his body to fight the cold.

What did just happen?

He was ignoring her. Simple as that, he was ignoring her!

He didn’t praise her looks, he didn’t offer his jacket, he didn’t accept a coffee nor her ride!

What the hell?

Did she do something wrong?

Key had been gone for a good time now; he wasn’t depressing over him, was he? She had set the perfect trap! It was impossible for him to feel sorry for the boy since he had ‘cheated on him’. It had to be something else…

Maybe he was indeed tired…

She sighed, pouting her lips.

He wasn’t going to escape though…

Key had made some friends in the past month.

Samantha, Doctor’s Jung’s nurse was actually a fun person to have around and she would call him sometimes to check on him, Sally Smith felt like his grandmother already and wasn’t ashamed of acting like it, scolding him when she thought he was doing something wrong, and Doctor Jung wasn’t so bad, the man loved to laugh and always looked at the bright side of everything.

“You’ll need clothes and furniture for the babies, did you thought of names yet?” Sally asked in her sweet, wise, tender voice while her hands kept doing their magic on the cake batter.

They were in the kitchen of Sally’s house and Key had his infamous pink apron on, with the bold letters ‘Domestic Terrorist’ on it. The old woman had laughed when she saw it for the first time and Key wondered if she had rented the house just because she was lonely.

Sally had no monetary difficulties; her bakery was quite famous in the area and was always full of people so it had to be it. She needed someone to talk to, someone to be with her and share memories with her.

He was probably the only asian person in Woodstock, but Sally didn’t mind that at all, she never gave him funny looks when he stepped on her door, asking to know about the rent.

Key looked at the old woman and smiled. ”I haven’t thought about it yet…I don’t know if I should give them Korean or American names..”

“I say you should keep your tradition, I’m sure you’re not going to stay here forever.” The woman threw him a knowing smile, adding another ingredient to her cake.

“Why do you say that?” Key asked, careful to spell his words correctly. He never thought that he would use English so much in his life.

“You get bored easily; this is not the right place for you Kibum. You're a city boy.” The woman chuckled. “Besides, you have your family waiting for you, don’t you?”

Key stayed silent for a moment, making Sally give him a curious look. “My parents…are always busy. They never gave me too much attention.”

“Oh? Do you love them?” She suddenly asked, putting the cake into the old looking oven.

Key looked up, surprised by the question, but nodded. “…I do. They’re my parents after all, I can’t hate them.” He said in a small, low voice.

“Then I’m sure they love you too. It’s impossible not to love someone like you.” The old woman smiled and gave him a baking tray. “Here, you can stir that now. Don’t forget to add the chocolate chips.”

Key nodded and grabbed his spoon, mixing the ingredients inside the tray. “I miss Korea but…my life is so confusing right now. I have to keep the twins a secret from the rest of the world so I can’t just appear in Korea, I’d be spotted right away.”

“Fame is indeed worse than dog ticks! It’s difficult yes, but what about their father? The other one I mean.” Sally blinked in confusion with her own words and then waved her arms dramatically in the air, shaking her head. “Oh, forget it, I’m just going to call you the mommy, this is too confusing and I’m too old for this!”

Key couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the woman.

Sally Smith was an adorable old lady, she was just like his grandmother, he had missing this so much…this felt like family.

Key’s laugher died down and he took a deep breath. “About Jonghyun…you know what happened, I already explained it. He’s going to have a hard time believing me so I’m sending him proof. Doctor Jung gave me what I need already.”

“Proof?” The woman asked while reading her heavy, old recipe books.

“The results of my exams, all that documentation and the ultra-sound too.” Key explained, trying to focus on the cake. “Here, I think it’s good. Should I add more chips?”

“Let’s see…” Sally looked inside Key’s tray and smiled. “No, that’s good honey, it’s enough. And do you think he will believe it? Those papers I mean?”

“I don’t know.” Key answered honestly, sighing sadly. He knew his situation was too unreal for someone to believe in. If his belly didn’t start to grow, he wouldn’t have believed it himself.

Sally started to chuckle to herself and Key gave her a curious look, smiling. “What are you thinking about?”

“Well…If anyone said to me that I’d have a pregnant boy living in my house and baking cakes and cookies with me, I’d laugh so hard that my heart wouldn’t take it and I’d die right there.”  She chuckled, making Key let out one of his infamous loud laughs on her left. “So you better give him some big evidences. It’s really hard to believe.”

Key smiled sadly. “I know, that’s why I’m scared.”

The old woman sighed loudly and cleaned her hands on her apron, pulling Key for a hug. “Don’t be. You need to look up and kick the bad feelings away.”

“You’re a lovely lady, do you know that?” Key smiled, feeling happiness rise inside him again. This woman could do wonders.

“Oh! And I’m pretty charming too! I can be old but my mind is not! So don’t stress like an old lady!” Sally let go of him and pointed her finger to his nose, poking it.

Key laughed again. This person was unbelievable indeed.

She had so much energy for her old age! He can only admire her even more.

“Why don’t we go shopping next Sunday?”

Key’s ears twitched at the magic word, making him forget about his own thoughts. “Eh? Shopping?”

“Your eyes brightened right now Kibum.” The woman gave him a sly smile.

“I’m sorry, I love malls, I admit.” Key bowed in shame. He knew that people didn’t bow in America, but old habits die hard.

The woman smiled in satisfaction and went to check the oven. “Then we shall visit them, we have baby clothes to buy, baby furniture, baby everything to buy!”

Key blinked stupidly for a moment.

He had rented only one room…and that room wasn’t big enough for two babies to sleep in.

“But…where am I going to…?”

“Oh don’t worry about it honey! I have too many useless rooms in this old house that you can use!” The woman grinned, pulling his cheek, teasing him. “We just need to repair the windows, paint the walls and voilà!”

Key bit his lip. He didn’t want to old woman to spend money with him… “Are you sure I can use another room? Do you want me to pay fo-”

“Oh no, no, no! You don’t need to pay for another room sweetie! I miss having kids around, this will be a pleasure!” Sally laughed, her wrinkled face blighting to the very thought of children.

“I don’t know how I can repay you…” Key said sincerely, murmuring the words.

The woman pinched his cheeks again. “Just smile. You have a lovely smile!”

Key grinned and put his hands on his hips, playfully. “Are you hitting on me?!”

The old woman laughed. “Ahah, you wish young boy!”
