Chapter 12

Just Say It Already

Audition

Aaron sat by himself, thinking. Finally he picked up his phone and dialed a number. "Hello?" A girl answered. "Hello?" Aaron was nervous. "Hi, I am looking for a person named Jiaxuan." The girl replied, "That’s me." "Ummm, I was asked to call and set up an audition." Aaron said. Jiaxuan answered, "Oh, are you the guy from the park yesterday?" Aaron said, "Yeah. My name’s Aaron."
Jiaxuan replied, "Okay, well are you free right now? There’s nothing going on. You could come and play for the judge."

Aaron thought for a moment, and decided since he was going to go through with it, he might as well get it over with. "Okay. What’s the address?" Jiaxuan replied, "1742 Bruanwick St." Aaron answered, "Okay, I’ll be there in an hour." "Okay, so do you have a solo prepared?" Jiaxuan asked. Aaron replied with a smile, "I have one in mind." Jiaxuan replied with a happy tone in her voice, "Okay, then that’s all. See you later!" "Okay, goodbye." Aaron hangs up.

"Should I do this? What should I do if I get in? I would have to go abroad and leave Gui Gui. But if I don’t at least try, then I will feel like I have missed my opportunity. I’ll do it." Aaron thought. With that decided, he got his flute, sheet music, and left. When he arrived, he went inside, and saw the girl from yesterday.
Jiaxuan answered, smiling, "Hi again. The judge is in there. Good luck!" With that, he was shown into a room and met the judge. The judge was a middle aged man who had glasses. He had black hair, and was smiling. "Hello." Aaron replied politely, "Hello sir." "Is your name Aaron Yan?" the judge asked. Aaron replied nervously, "Yes." "Okay, will you play a scale?" the judge asked.

Aaron decided to play a C scale, because it was his best scale. He played it, and he thought that he did quite well.
The judge didn't say anything, just wrote something down. "Aaron, now play your solo." He instructed. Aaron played the song that he had played in the park. After he had finished, he was breathing hard. The judge was writing something on his paper. Aaron got nervous. "Did I not pass? Was it bad or something?" The judge didn’t speak, just kept writing. Aaron plucked up his courage and asked, "Sir, did I pass? Or can I go?" The judge looked up, and was silent for a little bit. Finally he spoke.

"You possess great potential. I believe that you would prosper from going to our school." Aaron was shocked. "I made it?" The judge smiled. "Yes, congratulations." Aaron smiled, and then realized what it meant that he made it. "Can I think about it for a little bit?" "Why, do you have a financial problem?" the judge asked. Aaron replied, "No, I just have a person that I can’t leave here." The judge paused for a moment, before replying. "I will give you some time to think about it. If you need something that would allow you to come, please tell me." Aaron replied with relief, "I will. Thank you so much." The judge smiled. "No problem." Aaron left the office, thinking about his problem.

Aaron decided to tell Gui Gui about his dilemma because he didn’t want her to get the wrong idea before he made his decision. So he sent a text to Gui Gui.

Gui, can I come over to your house? I want to talk to you about something?
- Aaron

He immediately got a reply.

JOF COURSE! When did you start asking? See you in a minute!
- Gui ❤

Aaron read this, and felt sad. He didn’t want to tell her, but he felt that if he didn’t, and she found out, she would hate him forever. So he got up, and walked to Gui Gui’s house. *Ding Dong* Gui Gui opened the door, and immediately hugged Aaron. He, of course, hugged her back.
"Hey! Come in! What’s up?" Gui Gui asked. Aaron came in, and when they sat down on the couch, then he told her the news. Aaron started. "Gui, yesterday I was in the park, playing my flute." Gui Gui smiled. "Ooohhh. I love hearing you play. It’s so beautiful." Aaron continued. "Anyways, so after I was playing, a talent scout came up to me and told me that I should go audition for Juilliard. So I went. They liked me a lot, and told me that I made it." Gui Gui said, "That’s...wonderful."

Her voice was sad, and she looked down.
Aaron noticed this, and felt sad that she felt sad. Gui Gui asked, "Have you decided to go yet?" Aaron answered, "No, I’m still thinking about it." Gui Gui only said, "Oh." Her voice had turned smaller and smaller. Aaron impulsively hugged her. "Gui Gui, I won’t leave without talking to you first, okay?" Aaron promised.

Gui Gui didn’t say anything, just nodded against Aaron. When he looked down, he felt that she was crying. When he put his hand under her chin and looked at her face, there were tears all over her face. He gently wiped them off with his hands. Aaron asked gently, "Gui, don’t cry anymore, please?" He pulled her back into a hug, holding her tightly. He felt her arms tighten around him in response.
