11. Unwelcome
Delicately DangerousHe let her sleep in a while longer than usual, he wanted her to relax until they would go around for the day. He knew how it made her anxious, but he wanted to prove to his dad that he was more than capable. That Eunhee was worthy to be there, it was her right to not have to hide.
Jinyoung knocked on her door after the extra 20 minutes and he found that she was already half awake.
"Good morning, Eunhee." He told her, tossing a pillow at her.
"Aren't I late?" She asked him, catching it before it hit her face, "Why didn't you wake me sooner?" She sat up and looked around and noticed that it was too late for her to get into the school gates at this point.
"You didn't seem like you actually wanted to go to school today." Jinyoung said, looking at her with frown. "I know you came home early yesterday too.” He said pointedly at her.
Eunhee frowned back to him, “Yeah, something happened. Just stupid girl stuff though.” She said, trying to dismiss it so he wouldn’t ask. She didn’t want to have to explain to him about Daeryong and how the whole thing worked.
“Oh I see, well today, you can just stay home and I’m free today. All day.” Jinyoung said happily, “We can walk around and go out today.” They walked out to the breakfast table and Eunhee had gotten dressed and ready for the day.
“You have anything in particular that you want to do?” He asked her. “We could sit in the class?” He offered as he scooped food into his mouth. He made sure to talk in between bites as he was taught etiquette.
Eunhee, on the other hand, simply ate continuously. She didn’t have any need for lessons like that, but she wasn’t so unbecoming that she didn’t know how society expected her to behave. “We could do that.” She agreed, “They don’t teach elements in the human school after all.”
Jinyoung smiled at her, “Okay, well, then. Hurry up, we should get going.” He made sure to clean off his plate and Eunhee did the same, he took her empty plate and let her to last minute changes, if she wanted, to her outfit.
She went into the room and looked at herself in the mirror. What was she doing? Daeryong was going to make a deal about her missing class. She just knew it, he’d ask her about it.
She wouldn’t tell him. She wouldn’t want to, either. He would just say that those girls didn’t matter and she just needed to go on a date with him.
That was another thing, with Jia around egging her on, a part of her actually wanted to go on that damn date. Jia was probably going to keep bothering her about it anyway, the whole time she was at Jia’s house, all she did was make snide comments about him.
It pissed Eunhee off so much but she knew that Jia was right, she did want to go on a date with him, she did want to give him a chance. The problem was she was afraid to do so, no one had accepted her since her mom died and here was this human acting like he would.
The same thing was probably what started the chain reaction and caused her to end up in this kind of situation in the first place. She sighed, pulling over a nice pastel pink dress, she curled her hair and did some nice makeup.
The Fae were going to be brutal today, but she could at least look pretty while they were being cold to her. Jinyoung always said to “kill them with kindness” but Eunhee just preferred to be indifferent.
“Hey, are you ready yet?” Jinyoung asked her, knocking on her door.
She finished the last curl in her hair and turned around, “Yeah, just finished.” She turned and took his hand that he held out to her.
“Let’s go.” He smiled widely at her, Eunhee couldn’t help but feel guilty when he did that. She had never felt that way about it before so she couldn’t explain why she felt a pang of guilt now.
“So the school is over there, but can we make a big round to get there?” He asked her, the other Fae were staring at them as they wandered about hand in hand.
“Okay, whatever you want.” Eunhee said, hyper aware of everyone’s eyes on her. It was like she was some freak or something here. They all stared, they all watched her intently, like she had something on her face or some marking of her heritage.
It was worse than the human school because at the human school, they stared for a stupid reason. These people were judging her for what she was, her true identity, they knew what she was and still kept their distance from her anyway.
She was closer in kind to them than she was to humans, at least they could wield the magic. She snapped her fingers at her side several times, lighting a small flame just to keep her nervous energy at bay. It would make it difficult if she were to keep it all in, she knew how her emotions went.
People kept staring, Jinyoung tried to fill the awkwardness by talking but Eunhee couldn’t really focus on his words. She answered appropriately, taking in consideration of what he was talking about but she couldn’t do more than that.
She saw children staring at her as they approached the school. She had been told in the past that she smelled different, that they knew immediately when she was around. The teacher had been going over how to produce fire and control it.
It was one of her favorite elements, the teacher didn’t stop teaching the lesson and for that, Eunhee was grateful. The children listened carefully and tried to create fire for themselves, it distracted them from staring at her.
“You always liked children.” Jinyoung said as she, too, snapped her fingers to create fire.
“They don’t know why they’re judging me, so they stop as soon as they’re distracted, they’re pure.” Eunhee replied.
“You know that I want you here right?” Jinyoung said, he always reminded her of that fact. Despite everyone else, his opinion was the only one that should matter since he wanted her there.
But that was never enough for Eunhee, she never felt like it was enough. “I know, Jinyoung. But what about everyone else? They have their own opinions.” She said, noticing a redhead being the first one to get a flame in her hand.
“They don’t know why they’re judging, it’s like you said, old habits are hard to break.” He told her.
“Yeah, but it shouldn’t even be like that in the first place. We are magical creatures, and we should treat each other equally.” She replied, flicking her wrist to put the fire out. “I’m tired, let’s go home.” She said, walking away from the school and back towards the house.
Jinyoung sighed as he followed after her, she always got upset with the Fae, but he knew he would want her there. He wanted to see her there, she was important to him, very important to him.
Especially with the news he received yesterday. She needed to be protected, he needed to protect her. She was in danger, but she didn’t even feel welcome in his home. She always said she didn’t feel welcome anywhere.
He had to fix that if he wanted her, she needed to feel like she belonged with him.
