Through the crack of the door
Unlocked Doors
Now every door on the dorms required a door safety chain and an additional padlock apart from the doorknobs lock. Security was doubled and cameras were poised everywhere.
It had been a week since Sulli left.
The empty room felt haunted and strange when her parents came to pick up her stuff. It was like she was dead to the world. But Luna knew she was more than dead.
Luna came to her room after her classes that day. She wasn’t in the mood to hang out with anyone. It was so strange and hard to adjust to Sulli's abscence. She still looked back to see if she was following. She sometimes walked by her door to find her. She sometimes said ‘me and Sulli’ when she meant herself. Then she would remember she was gone.
It was already dark and Luna sat on her bed, combing her still wet hair when she heard a soft knock on the door. It was so light that she thought it might just have been the wind at first. But there it was a second time, then a third. Someone was definitely knocking at her door.
Luna stood. “Who’s there?”
There was no sound. She waited for some noise but nothing happened.
Luna decided to resume her nightly activities when she heard a soft sound, almost like a sing-song. It called her. “Luna…”
She waited for it and it came about half a minute later.
“Luna…”
She knew that voice anywhere but the color was different, it had a ring of frightening innocence and it sounded like a remix of every scary yet sweet voice she had heard in horror movies.
“Luna...”
“Sulli?”
Luna walked a few steps toward the door. She heard nothing, no steps, no breathing, no movement. She slowly unlocked the door but left the chain on so only a crack of the door would be open. She looked outside. There was only the soundless and tranquil night.
“Hey!” said Sulli scaring Luna as she appeared in less than a second before her. Through the crack of the door she could only see one of her eyes and her little grin. She looked pale, ghostly and terribly beautiful.
