There was no one there
Unlocked Doors
There was a knock on her door. It wasn’t locked but at least it wasn’t wide open like the night she saw (or imagined) the ghost girl.
She waited for another sound but there was nothing.
Collecting all the courage possible she went to her closet put on a sweater over her pajamas and looked for a flashlight. When she found the flashlight, the thing just didn’t want to cooperate with her. She hit it once, twice and finally, after flickering for a while, it . She rushed to her door.
Sulli gripped the doorknob and breathed deeply. She opened the door slightly, watching the corridor. The girl stepped outside once she realized there was no one there. She thought that maybe it was a prank from any of the girls that learned about her late night visit.
She walked down the corridor, afraid that any of the nuns in watch duty would found out she was out of bed. She reached an end that divided the corridor in two. Pondering where she should head to, the flashlight began to fail again. Sulli decided it was best to just go back to her room besides there was not a soul to be seen. She turned, careful not to make any sound. But just then she saw with her peripheral vision, long black hair, a girl passing just behind her.
Her hands trembled and cold fear crawled up her back, taking over her head and brain.
“It’s cold outside,” said the ghost girl. There was a ring of concern in her voice but it was still said as a statement. It sounded so ethereal, so thrilling and scary.
Without even thinking about it she was running desperately to her room. Sulli reached her room faster than she ever imagined she was capable of. She locked her door and waited, holding the doorknob. It shifted in her hand as if the person outside was attempting to open the door. Sulli forgot how to breathe.
The jittering of the doorknob ceased. A second, two seconds… five seconds passed and there was no sound again, just dead silence.
“I’m sorry…” the voice outside whispered as if her lips had been pressed to the door.
A shiver ran through Sulli’s body. Again she waited. Then, as if by instinct and against her common sense, she unlocked her door and opened it. There was no one there.
