Same, but Different“It’s not a coincidence,” Rap Mon repeats.
“What are you talking about?”
“Three years ago…”
“Ready?” Soo stands by on her keyboard. Taking a deep breath, I start the song.
“I’ve been living with a shadow overhead
I’ve been sleeping with a cloud above my bed
I’ve been lonely for so long
Trapped in the past I just can’t seem to move on.”
Namjoon follows up with the next verse,
“I’ve been hiding all my hopes and dreams away
Just in case I ever need them again someday
I’ve been setting aside time
To clear a little space in the corners of my mind.”
Together,
“All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can’t make it through without a way back into love
And if I open my heart again
I guess I’m hoping you’ll be there for me in the end.”
As the song ends, the crowd cheers and yet another successful busker event comes to an end.
That was the busker event where Namjoon got scouted. He had rejected the offer then, saying something about not wanting to leave the band.
“What about that?” I ask, still clueless as to the link between this and what we were talking about.
“You were there when that guy came to our company, weren’t you?” Rap Mon probes. I struggle to think back.
“I guess…?” Namjoon had dragged me along with him. The plan was to get the company to sign on all of us as a band, but it fell through because the company was only interested in Namjoon. They didn’t even allow me to go into the office with him, those bastards. Curious, I started wandering around on my own
“I am tired of this place, I hope people change
I need time to replace what I gave away
And my hopes they are high, I must keep them small
Though I try to resist I still want it all.”
Someone is singing. His voice is deep but yet holds a lot of emotions. I trace the voice to its source and see a boy sitting in one of the little studios. The door is open ajar, and music flows out.
“I see swimming pools and living rooms and aeroplanes
I see a little house on the hill and children’s names
I see quiet nights poured over ice and Tanqueray
But everything is shattering and it’s my mistake.”
Knowing the song, I sing softly.
“Only fools fall for you, only fools
Only fools do what I do, only fools fall.”
Suddenly, the music stops and the boy inside swivels around in his chair. I take a surprised step back.
“Who are you?” He asks. “Are you a new trainee here?”
“Byeol-ah, where are you?” Namjoon calls for me. Apologising to the boy, I run back to Namjoon.
“And you remember my name from that?” I ask in disbelieve. And haven’t I changed quite a bit since then?
“I’ll always remember your voice,” Rap Mon says, smiling at me. “It’s too beautiful to forget.”
I blush at his words. “Thank you.”
“Lee Byeol!” Soo shouts from the front door, bringing me back to the reality that my friends have kept me waiting for too long. With the guys behind her, she saunters towards me.
“Good morning,” I greet sarcastically.
“Sorry, Byeol. Had some issues to settle with tonight’s club,” Woong explains. Then as if for the first time since stepping in, they notice Rap Mon.
“Hello,” Soo bows, question marks shooting out from her eyes. Standing up, Rap Mon returns the greeting before excusing himself.
“What was that about?” Ray asks when he’s gone. The guys and Soo take their seats around me.
“Just order already,” I change the subject. “I almost starved to death waiting for you.”
