Missing you

Same, but Different
“We’re late!” Ray’s screaming wakes me up at 7AM in the morning. He barged into the room and shook Soo up but the noise had disrupted my sleep too.

“Late for what…” I manage to mumble.

“School!” Woong pokes his sleepy head into the room squinting at us.

“Damn it, guys,” Soo cusses. “We’re in a different department, remember?”

“They woke me up too…” Seob pouts in complaint. Ray blinks a couple of times before realisation hits him.

“Oh right.”

“Since we’re all up,” Woong says. “Let’s go for breakfast!”

And for breakfast we went. Among the clothes I keep at Soo’s house, I pick out a simple knit dress that matches my coat.

“Won’t you be cold in that?” Woong eyes my outfit, his gaze falling upon my slightly above knee length dress.

“No.” I slip into a borrowed pair of white sneakers. “Where to for breakfast?”

“Anywhere that sells hangover soup,” Ray butts in and I shake my head at him in disapproval.

“You didn’t even drink that much,” I tell him. “And are those Seob’s clothes?” I shake my head once more at the too-small outfit.

At the car park downstairs, Woong steps up to take the driver’s seat but I stop him.

“Not on a hangover headache,” I tell him before grabbing the keys from him.

“You have a license?” Ray asks doubtfully and I roll my eyes at him.

“We even celebrated it together what are you talking about!” Seob smacks him in the back.  Ray frowns and flies into the back seat. The siblings climb in after Ray and Woong takes the front passenger seat. Igniting the engine, I pull out of the lot swiftly with the guys in awe of my driving skill.

“Auntie!” I call as we step into the restaurant I came to with Rap Mon just yesterday.

“You’re here early,” Auntie smiles, leading us to my usual table.

“Hello Auntie,” Soo greets. With her as exception, it is my friends’ first time here.

“What’s there to eat?” Woong asks, looking around.

“Hangover soup…” I scan the table.

“Three sets,” Soo continues after me. “Tofu soup for me. Byeol?”

“Omurice, thank you Auntie!” I finish the order.

“You two come here often?” Seob asks, the question directed more at his sister than at us in general. Soo shrugs.

“I only come when she brings me,” she tells him. “You guys should be grateful. Byeol doesn’t bring just anyone here, you know?”

“Why? What’s so special about this place?”

“It’s like my second home,” I say, my gaze fixed on the couple coming in at the entrance.

“Trust me, hyung, this place is really daebak!” Rap Mon excitedly drags Jin in, sitting down at a random table. He looks around but still hasn’t noticed me and I don’t think my friends would have cared until Soo waves a hand in front of me.

“What are you staring at?” She follows my line of sight and, “Byeol, you…”

I bury my face in my hands.

“Aren’t you the boy who came in with Byeol yesterday?” I hear Auntie ask.

“Oh, isn’t that BTS?” Seob’s eyes widen at sight of the idols.

“Byeol is here with a bunch of friends,” Auntie tells Rap Mon.

“She’s here?” Peeping through my fingers, I see Rap Mon stand. He looks towards my direction immediately and waves. I awkwardly smile back.

“Good morning,” I greet him and send a little smile at the older guy behind.

“Why are you sitting over there,” Soo interrupts. “Come join us!” I kick her from under the table but instead of making space between herself and Seob beside her, Soo pushes her brother to fit the idols in between us. Grabbing chairs from the next table, Rap Mon and Jin sit down.

“What did you guys order?” Jin asks, his smile as bright as ever.

“Hangover soup,” Seob answers shyly. He’s been low-key obsessing over the boy group ever since that night I had a duet with Jungkook.

“Hangover soup…?” Jin looks over at Rap Mon, who in turn is staring so blatantly at me. Woong clears his throat.

“What are idols like you doing in a place like this?” He asks, sarcasm thick in his voice.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask, slightly annoyed. What did he mean, ‘a place like this’?

“Byeol brought me here for dinner last evening,” Rap Mon says, looking straight at Woong. The tension suddenly brought up is no joke.

“You think I can film Eat Jin here?” Jin asks me, and I shrug.

“You two should order too,” I speak up finally.

“What’s on the menu today?” Rap Mon asks, looking around for Auntie.

“Just order whatever you’re feeling,” I tell him.

“Special treatment only because you’re with Byeol,” Auntie tells him as she returns with the hangover soups.

“But yesterday… Oh.” Rap Mon knowingly flashes his dimply smile at me and I blush involuntarily. “You remembered.”

This time, Soo clears .

“Do you have cold noodles, too?” Jin asks Auntie with those puppy eyes and Auntie nods.

“What about you, young man?” Auntie asks Rap Mon.

“I’ll have whatever Byeol’s having.”

“Omurice? In the morning?” I ask without processing the question first. Upon realisation I face palm myself mentally.

“Omurice? In the morning?” Rap Mon redirects my question back at me. “Fine with me.” And with that, Auntie disappears back into the kitchen, coming back out a while later with the rest of the orders. The hangover soup people have already started digging in.

“Oh, daebak!” Jin praises Auntie’s cooking non-stop. As we eat, Soo keeps shooting eye lasers at me.

“What?” I ask, catching the attention of the others at the table. Soo shakes her head with a sneaky smile. Stretching out my leg to kick her, I accidently hit the man beside me instead.

“Ouch,” Rap Mon rubs his leg where I struck him.

“Sorry!” I hurry to apologise, internally blaming him for having long legs. I throw a look at Soo.

“It’s okay,” he says, his smile never faltering.

“I’m really sorry,” I apologise again, reaching over under the table again and this time striking the intended target.

“Hey!” Soo cries out and turns toward Seob for help but the kid is too focused on his food to notice his distressed noona.

“Kids, image maintenance please,” Ray steps up as the oldest.

“Shut up,” Soo and I say in unison, earning us a small laughter from the idols.

“What’s so funny?” I mumble before turning back to my rice. My mind starts to float as I eat silently.

“A penny for your thoughts?” Rap Mon’s voice disrupts my train of thoughts. As a habit, I hold up an open palm to collect the penny. The table falls silent with my friends staring at me. Snapping awake, I awkwardly pull back my hand. I slap myself mentally for the nth time today. That gesture was something I had shared only with Namjoon.

“Weren’t we supposed to be coming for dinner?” I ask him in an attempt to change the subject. Rap Mon smiles despite the exchange of looks among my friends and Jin.

“We still are,” he confirms.

“Then what are you doing here?”

“Why can’t I be here?”

I stare at Rap Mon, lost for words. He smiles. I continue eating.

“I came because I had a feeling I would be able to see you here,” Rap Mon says suddenly, stunning everyone at the table.

“What…?” For a moment, I forget how to speak.

“Because I missed you.”
