Set-up

Senior year

“Hey Hanni, I have some good news for you!” Gummi said as she plopped her textbooks on the desk in their dorm. Hanni was roaming the Internet on her computer, she turned her head to look at Gummi “hm?” she said, not expecting this news to be anything that great.

“Shinwoo is single!” Gummi revealed, well really she was just taking back the lie she had told Hanni previously that day.

“Oh my gosh, really?!” Hanni sang happily, getting out of her seat and grabbing one of Gummi’s hands.

Gummi giggled at how excited Hanni looked and it made her feel even worse about lying to her before. “Yeah, I asked my friend Choa… since they’re close friends… she said he’s single and that she’ll set up a dinner date. Choa will bring her sister and I’ll get Gongchan to accompany Shinwoo so there’s at least one other guy there” Gummi explained.

“That sounds perfect!” Hanni nodded. “Great, I’m going to go tell Gongchan” Gummi said, but then remembered that Minsun was supposed to see Gongchan later today and decided to force Minsun to tell him then. She smiled evilly as she picked up her phone to dial Minsun’s number.

“Ya, Minsun-ah, go tell Gongchan that we’re going to eat dinner together on Friday and tell him he HAS to bring Shinwoo with him” Gummi said.

“What? Why do I have to tell him? Can’t you?” Minsun whined.

“Aren’t you meeting him at the fountain tonight or some ? Just tell him then” Gummi urged.

“I wasn’t going to actually go to that!” Minsun clarified.

“Well too bad, just go to tell him about dinner. You better tell him, I’m busy” Gummi pressed.

“Busy doing what? It’s only the 2nd day of classes! What, are you piled with syllabuses or something?” Minsun yelled, rolling her eyes.

“I’m just…BUSY. Bye!” Gummi said before she hung up.

“Ugh! That little!” Minsun cursed as she closed her phone. She looked around her, realizing where she was sitting and how pathetic she was. “Oops, how did I even get here?” she was sitting on the ledge of the very fountain Gongchan told her to meet him at. “I will not let him win this easily” she mumbled and soon stood up, but was quickly pushed back down by two hands that were placed on each side of her shoulder.

She looked up, completely unamused by who it was “aish, I’m not here because you told me to be!” Minsun said, shaking his hands off of her as she got up again. “Really? Then why are you here?” Gongchan questioned, shooting her another one of those killer smiles she “hated” oh so much.

Minsun scoffed “Can’t a girl sit by a fountain just for her own peace of mind? What, did your parents buy this fountain or something?” Minsun defended.

Gongchan smiled at how defensive she was getting “Minsun, just admit it, you like me” Gongchan said with a chuckle.

His words only led Minsun to scoff at him again “Like you? I guess if like is when you want to throw someone down a well, then yeah, I like you” Minsun replied, making Gongchan laugh.

Minsun’s face then got serious “look Gongchan…” Minsun said, taking a step closer to him, at this point there noses were close to touching, Minsun shot him a devious smile “sometimes I think about how great it would be if we had worked out, you know, holding hands, being in each others arms, kissing and all-” Gongchan shivered at Minsuns words, only making her more excited to finish her sentence, “but then I wonder… can you really fulfill my needs? I don’t know… see you later Gonghcan” Minsun said, tapping him on the shoulder and shooting him another smile before walking past him. Gongchan exhaled deeply once she was behind him, he turned around in frustration “you can’t just…do that!” Gongchan cried, Minsun giggled at his statement and then turned around “Oh right, I’ll see you on Friday night for dinner, make sure Shinwoo is on board or else I’m not coming. Don’t ask any questions either” Minsun said before turning back around.

“What the heck is up with that girl…I always knew she was a player, but not to this level!”  Gongchan thought, but he couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle and feel giddy inside about how close Minsun’s face was to his.

“I totally frustrated him, like totally! I bet he was going crazy inside!” Minsun laughed as Choa looked at her in worry. “Someone’s having a little too much fun,” Choa said as she dried her newly washed hair with a towel. “He started it!” Minsun defended. “Yeah, I guess he deserves it” Choa laughed.

“So, did you tell him about Friday?” Choa asked. “Yeah, I remembered last minute. I’m 10000% sure he’s coming and that he’ll bring Shinwoo with him…but I just don’t get why we have to do it this way…why are we keeping this a secret from Shinwoo again?” Minsun asked in confusion.

“Because… Shinwoo would totally not be up for this” Choa let out, once she did she realized that maybe she should have thought about whether she was going about this the right way.

Minsun shook her head at her sister “hold up, so you know Shinwoo won’t like this idea but we’re still going to go through with it?” Minsun asked, “how the hell is that going to make you two friends again? If anything he’s gonna hate you once he finds out!” Minsun said, making a point.

Choa bit her lip “well, he just won’t find out then…” Choa stated nervously. Minsun just shook her head at her sister before she laid her head on the pillow and fell asleep.

The next day was the start of the homecoming dance club meet ups. All ten of them had mixed feelings about it. There were people like Gongchan, Gummi and Baro who were excited to see what would happen, there were also people like Soyul, Ellin, Shinwoo and Choa who were nervous as hell to have to interact with the people they had so many unfinished issues with, and then there were people like Sandeul, Minsun and Jinyoung who just down right didn’t want to go.

Regardless of how any of them felt, they knew that they had to show up if they didn’t want to face even worse consequences, and as expected, all of them did show up, but annoyed expressions were plastered on everyone’s faces, well except for Gongchan’s. Even though Gummi and Baro didn’t mind this punishment, they didn’t want to show it on the outside for some reason.

“Oh my gosh! We have such a big turn up this year! Well, 10 more students than last year at least” someone that looked to be the club leader said.

“I wonder why” Jinyoung mumbled under his breath, making Baro laugh under his as well.

Minsun was cringing in her seat; she just couldn’t handle how peppy the club leader was acting. It was just too cute, in the worst way. “I’m going to vomit, I cannot do a whole semester of this, I can’t, someone save me please” Minsun whispered to Choa and Gummi. “Just bear with it, I’m sure she’s only this overboard at first and then she’ll chill a bit” Gummi reassured, “she better or else I swear I will go insane” Minsun cried.

“Okay, well we’re going to split up the work in groups of five, every group will be responsible for something” the club leader began to list out the roles and who would be doing them “Next is the group responsible for posters; Jinyoung, Gongchan, Minsun, Sandeul, and…”

“Please don’t say a my name, please don’t say my name” Ellin said under her breath with crossed fingers.

“Ellin”

“” Ellin cursed. She turned her head to look at Soyul, pouting “hang in there Ellin-ah” Soyul tried to comfort.

“The next group in charge of decorations are; Shinwoo, Soyul, Gummi, Baro and Choa” the club leader smiled as the five of them gave her death glares, especially Choa.

“I guess we’re going to have to be the parents of this group” Gummi nudged to Baro “tell me about it, Not only Choa with Shinwoo but Soyul as well? It’s as if this girl wants the home coming dance to be an utter disaster” Baro said as he shook his head. “Come to think of it these groupings are very suspicious, how could this all be a coincidence, why are the ten of us together? I swear that vice principle is up to this, he’s so extra,” Gummi groaned as she brushed her fingers through her bobbed hair.

Shinwoo stared at Choa as she continued to just give the club leader death glares. A few moments later Choa noticed eyes on her face and turned towards Shinwoos direction, finally locking eyes with his. His face immediately turned the other way “aish, this is going to be so awkward” Choa sighed under her breath. “This is why this Hanni set up has to work” Choa thought.

There wasn’t any actual work that day, the group leader spent the whole hour explaining how things would work and the deadlines they had to meet. After an hour, that felt like two, ended, Choa immediately got up and was going to talk with Gummi about the set up; that was until Gongchan grabbed her hand and pulled her away from everyone else.

“Ya, what are you doing? I don’t want to make my own twin sister jealous” Choa joked.

Gongchan let out a laugh but his face soon after became serious “Choa, you guys have to cut this plan, what are you even thinking!” Gongchan said in a quiet voice so that Shinwoo wouldn’t hear, but that didn’t stop Shinwoo from suspiciously looking at the two.

“How the hell do you even know it’s a set up? Did my sister tell you? That idiot!” Choa groaned.

“No, she didn’t. She was too busy teasing me to let me in on those details. I heard from Baro who heard from Gummi. She told him over coffee yesterday apparently” Gongchan explained.

“Wait what? Gummi and Baro had coffee together yesterday?” Choa said, completely forgetting what the point of the conversation was.

“That’s not important now, what’s important is that you don’t go through with this, Shinwoo is going to feel hurt, just don’t” Gongchan urged.

“Just stay out of it, I’m going to be taking the blame, so you just make sure you show up with Shinwoo, okay?” Choa insisted.

“Choa, listen”

“No, you listen. Did you ever think that maybe things will end up well? That maybe this is what Shinwoo needs? That maybe he’ll end up liking her and forgetting about me?” Choa raged.

“No Choa, I didn’t think that. You know why? It’s because he’s in love with you, and that’s not going to just change if you throw a pretty girl in front of him” Gongchan said angrily, he was extremely annoyed so he just walked away from her.

Aish, Gong. Chan. sik.

“What was that all about?” Gummi asked as her and Minsun approached her.

Choa looked up at Gummi, shooting her an annoyed stare. She crossed her arms in front of her “Why the hell were you on a coffee date with Baro?” Choa said, loud enough for Baro and everyone else to hear. “Ya, you little” Gummi cried, covering Choa’s mouth

“Eh? Baro? You went on a coffee date with Baro?” Minsun asked, once again loud enough for everyone to hear. Baro let out a laugh before approaching the girls “Can’t I drink coffee with your friend, or is that not aloud? I was planning on asking her out at the end of the week” Baro smirked.

“What!?” Choa and Minsun exclaimed, making Baro laugh.

“He’s joking” Gummi calmed, punching Baro’s arm soon afterword’s. “We were just drinking coffee, jeez girls, we aren’t in high school anymore. Two adults can go out for coffee without it being a big deal” Gummi cleared.

Jinyoung was stunned by this sight. He couldn’t believe how openly friendly Baro was now being to his enemies. Jinyoung’s fists clenched in rage, he felt like he had been stabbed in the back once again. He kicked his chair, resulting in an extremely loud noise that led to Baro and the girls turning around.

Jinyoung just gave Baro a cold glare before turning around to leave the room.

“What a baby” Ellin said under her breath. “Let’s go Soyul” Ellin sighed, grabbing Soyul’s hand and leading her out the door.

“Aren’t you going to chase after him?” Gummi asked, a little worried. She really didn’t want a repeat of senior year but that’s what seemed to be happening and it was stressing her out. “No, I’m not. He’s close to waking up, I can feel it. Everyday he has to try harder to convince himself that he’s in the right, he’s going to burst soon, we just have to sit and wait now” Baro revealed.

Gummi looked at him unconvinced “and if he doesn’t?” she brought herself to ask.

“Then I’m done with him” he replied, without a second thought.

The end of the week finally arrived and Choa and Minsun were very seriously getting ready for the dinner gathering, a little too seriously. “Okay so which outfit says “I know you like me but you’re never gonna have me” Minsun said holding up two hangers with outfits on them. Choa couldn’t help but laugh at her sister “the left one…I guess. The right one says “I know you like me and I know I like you too but I’m just going to elongate the chase” and that’s totally not you” Choa said sarcastically.

Minsun shot her sister an unamused stare “And what are you going to wear, huh? The “I’m going to set you up with a random girl to get rid of my feelings for you even though I’m totally in love with you” outfit?” Minsun said, rolling her eyes at her.

“Ya! I am not in love with him!” Choa yelled, Gummi soon after entering their room “Choa, we have no time for lies right now, it’s 5 minutes till 8, and we should be the first ones there!” Gummi pestered.

“Oh my gosh, I have the worst friends!” Choa cried, Minsun and Gummi laughing at her sudden breakdown.

“Damn Minsun, you really had to go for that “I just killed my husband to inherit his fortune” look?” Gummi said as she looked at Minsun’s smoky eye make-up and all black one piece. “What? Are the wings of my eyeliner too sharp?” Minsun said as she laughed at Gummi’s joke. “No, you look great. The “I just killed my husband” look is my favorite anyways” Gummi chuckled.

Gummi then turned her head to look in Choa direction “Oh, and I see we have miss “I’m a grandma from the 90’s” coming to make us all look underdressed” Gummi sighed, shaking her head in dissatisfaction at the knitted sweater Choa was wearing.  “There is NO way I’m letting you wear that” Gummi refused.

Choa laughed at Gummi’s commentary “look, I’m supposed to look ugly, I don’t even think I should go to this thing” Choa sighed, making Minsun and Gummi laugh in disbelief “you’re the one who set this whole thing up!” they both yelled in unison. “Oh right” Choa said, awkwardly laughing.

“Choa, you don’t have to worry about dressing ugly, Hanni is hot as hell, you couldn’t out dress her even if you tried” Gummi said, patting her friend on the shoulder, trying to reassure her “was that supposed to comfort me because it didn’t” Choa grumbled, Shaking Gummi’s hand off of her.

“You know what, I will wear something nice, in fact, I’m going to wear Minsuns “I killed my husband and my secret lover in one night” outfit!” Choa joked as she picked up the 2nd outfit Minsun wasn’t going to wear. “That’s more like it!” Gummi exclaimed, clapping in excitement. The last time Choa dressed up was at their 8th grade dance.

“Hanni, these are my two closest friends; Choa and Minsun” Gummi introduced as they stood in front of a table at one of the universities restaurant’s and pub’s. “Oh, they’re the twins” Hanni smiled, “it’s nice to meet you” she greeted.

“You too” the twins greeted back with a smile before the four of them sat down. Choa and Minsun sat across Gummi and Hanni. They wanted to make sure Shinwoo would sit next to Hanni so they left a free seat beside her. “When Gongchan comes in you have to make sure he sits beside you” Choa alerted her sister. “Yeah, yeah, like I even have to try, he’s going to sit beside me all by himself” Minsun said confidently, making Hanni laugh “I like you” she complimented.

This Hanni girl is really charming, this set up might actually work. Choa thought hopefully, but for some reason she felt extremely nervous. Her heart beat quickly as she waited for Gongchan and Shinwoo to walk through the restaurants doors.

“Here they come” Gummi alerted, nudging Hanni as she gazed out the window where she saw Gongchan walking in the distance.

“Is Shinwoo there too?” Choa asked nervously as she remembered her and Gongchan’s heated argument.

“Hmm…I don’t know” Gummi said, as she continued to gaze out the window “oh wait, yeah he is” Gummi smiled, making Choa exhale a deep sigh of relief.

“I told you he’d bring Shinwoo” Minsun said to her sister.

Once Gongchan and Shinwoo approached the girls’ table, they got up to greet them. Gongchan’s eyes opened wide when he saw Minsun, his heart sunk a little at her sight; he had never seen her dressed up like this. He couldn’t deny his attraction for her now; Minsun shot him another one of her devious smiles. “She’s purposely trying to make me go crazy” he thought.

Shinwoo on the other hand couldn’t take his eyes off of Choa, but was soon taken back into reality when Gummi called his name “Shinwoo, Gongchan, this is my roommate Hanni. She’s a freshman too” Gummi introduced, Shinwoo and Gongchan bowed after her introduction “Hanni this is Gongchan, and Shinwoo. Hanni smiled and bowed.

Gongchan shot the three girl’s death glares, especially Choa. He was about to sit beside Hanni to piss the girl’s off until Minsun pulled his arm and forced him beside her. “Just cooperate, alright?” Minsun urged. “No, I can’t believe you girls are doing this when you know Shinwoo still likes your sister!” Gongchan whispered back to her. “I said cooperate! Jeez it’s just dinner calm down!” Minsun pressed.

“What do I get out of it?” Gongchan asked, surprising Minsun by his sudden question.

Minsun thought for a bit “I’ll do whatever you want for a day. Okay?” Minsun offered, regretting those words once they came out.

“Anything?” Gongchan asked, with a smile. “Within reason and logic, yeah” Minsun replied. “Fine, but you better keep this promise” Gongchan said, finally meeting her halfway.

The dinner went pretty smoothly after that. Hanni and Shinwoo talked for most of the time, although it was Hanni who had to instigate almost every conversation since Shinwoo kept getting distracted by Choa. Whenever Choa would laugh, or even when she was chowing down her noodles, he couldn’t help but smile at her, which eventually made her feel extremely uncomfortable. She couldn’t deny it, she still got butterflies in her stomach when Shinwoo gazed at her the way he did, but it made her uncomfortable since Hanni liked him and probably noticed Shinwoo’s feelings for Choa; it made her feel awful and also made her feel a little annoyed by Shinwoo’s behavior. “Can’t you see a girl is trying to get to know you? Why aren’t you paying as much attention to her as she is to you!” Choa thought.

It had gotten late so they all decided to call it a night and leave. They said their goodbyes and the boys and girl’s split ways since the girl’s wanted to use the restroom before they left and didn’t want the boys to wait for them.

Soon later they walked out of the restaurant and headed to their dorm building. Well, until someone interrupted them “I need to talk to you” someone said as Choa felt a hand being placed on her wrist.

Choa and the girls were a little taken a back once they saw who it was.

It was Shinwoo, and he didn’t look happy.
