The Pit of Desperation

Blaze

As if guilty Tao's eyes lingered over the floor while everyone else awaited his answer. At last he lifted his head up to stare back at him.

In Donghae's memory, he recalled Tao searching through the internet about pregnancy.

Did he...had he really...

"It's not mine." Tao replied.

Again, shocked, Donghae felt his mind spin. He didn't think he'd ever been so dismayed before.

What the hell was going on?!

If it wasn’t Tao, who then?!

Tao's eyes seemed to linger around as if puzzled with discontent before turning back to stare at Kris. Everyone, along with Donghae, followed Tao's gaze to interrogate him with their eyes. Kris' eyes looked hollow, disconcerted and dumbfounded by what he'd just heard, but his eyes didn't settle on Donghae or the others' muddled expressions. Instead, his gaze remained fixated on the doctor.

Donghae felt Kris push him aside as he stepped up, "W..what did you say?"

"Are you her husband?"

Donghae felt his eyes engrave themselves into Kris' side profile, imaginatively dismantling his features. He really didn't like how things were turning out.

"Uh...yea, yes." He lifelessly nodded.

Pressing his lips together he went on, "Your wife is in a dangerous state. I'm sorry, but we have no choice, but to remove the fetus."

Kris lips immediately drooped apart, deadpanned by the news. "Can't you...can't you save it? The baby?"

"I'm sorry," the doctor apologized again.

Slightly pushing Kris away, Donghae took over the conversation, "All right, we get it. Just go back in there and save her."

Once the doors closed again, Tao slumped back down into the seat with his head hung lower than before. Donghae felt a glare escape his eyes when he glanced at Kris and repressing a sigh, turned to stare at the doors.

Chorong was receiving IV treatment for dehydration and to help stabilize her blood count. Finally out of her bloody clothes, she was now in her own private room in one of those hospital gowns. She'd actually never had the chance to wear one before and thought it actually felt nice. The kind nurse had also given her a sandwich and some water to drink, in order to help replenish her energy.

Ever since arriving at the hospital, she'd been alone in the ER receiving treatment for her injuries. The rest were awaiting news about Namjoo's surgery. She, too, felt very sorry about it. If only she'd been a little stronger she could have done something to prevent it, but she hadn't. Chorong thought to visit Namjoo as soon as she was out, but she also felt embarrassed. Maybe she wasn't entitled to go see her in the ward. Even as a friend, she hadn't been able to do anything for her.

The knock at the door made her look up and at first she hoped it was Suho visiting her. She still couldn't forget how he'd pressed his shirt against the cut at the back of her head where blood had been oozing out. It reminded her why she liked him so.

Suho was selfless with a big heart, always looking out for others before himself even if it was hard on him. Chorong didn't think she'd ever met anyone so brave before. He was also a source of strength for someone so useless like her. And she looked up to him too.

"Hey," it was Lay.

Pulling on a smile, Chorong further sat up on the bed, "Is everything ok?"

He nodded, sitting at the edge of the bed. "Namjoo's finally out of surgery. The others are with her."

Letting out a sigh of relief she remarked, "That's good news. Did they say when she'll wake up?"

"Not sure." He replied.

Lay looked drained. Dark bags were now apparent under his eyes, but his eyes also read of something else. He looked despondent and there was no smile there even though there had been good news.

"Is something wrong?" Chorong pressed on.

He remained quiet as if sorting his thoughts. Then lifting up his eyes to look at her explained, "It looks like we ended up losing someone."

She frowned, "What do you mean?"

According to her memory, everyone of them had made it out alive.

Pressing his lips together hesitantly he finally said, "Namjoo lost her baby."

Chorong swore her jaw reached the floor. The last thing she'd expected to hear was something like this.

With a hand up to her lips in disbelief she could barely manage to utter anything. Now she felt even more guilty for not being able to do anything when Namjoo had solely risked her life to come out there for them. One of the worst things a parent could ever experience was losing a child.

In the very back of her mind she saw Namjoo falling flat to the ground, the blood immediately soaking the grass red.

She could barely think of anything else to say, but could only imagine how awful Namjoo might feel when she awoke, realizing part of her was gone forever.

"Are you ok?" Lay broke into her thoughts.

Looking back at him surprised she felt her lids flutter, "Oh...yea."

"Did you eat? I could get you something." He kindly offered.

"I'm not hungry." And she didn’t think she could ever feel hungry again after hearing the disdainful news. "I'm fine. So you should go and get some rest. You look really tired."

"I should, huh?" He tiredly smiled.

Lay, too, put so much effort into everything.

"Call me if you need anything," he offered. "I'll come back to see you later."

Nodding, she watched him get up and walk out. Even if she was waiting, she didn't think Suho would show up when his team mate had just barely made it out alive from surgery.

~_____~

Victoria was worried for Donghae, apologetic about Namjoo and sorry for the rest of the team. Even as she stood there watching from behind as Donghae sat by the bed, she could feel he was distressed by every occurrence today. He was plagued by a concern that grew greater throughout the day.

From the very beginning, it had always been Namjoo and Suho this and that, his very favorite assistants. Without talking, she knew he was upset. Not just about her surgery or not knowing about her pregnancy, but about just everything. Victoria really wanted to comfort him, but he wouldn't want to receive this moment. So all she could do, was just stand there behind him.

Four hours had passed while she was in surgery and two hours had passed since she was out. It was barely dark outside, but at least they were all back in Seoul. She'd went over speed limit in order to get to the hospital as soon as the speedy helicopter flew Chorong and Namjoo along with Donghae in. The moment she found the surgery entrance, Donghae was nervously pacing while biting his thumb out of anxiety.

"Donghae," Suho spoke up. "Namjoo's probably still worn over by the anesthesia. It'll probably be a while until she wakes up. Why don't you get something to eat? I'll stay and keep watch."

"No, I'm fine." Donghae replied. "You two go out and get some rest. I want to stay a while longer."

"Donghae..." Suho tried.

"I'll be fine. I'm not very hungry anyway, so go and come back." he told.

Donghae even sounded tired. They were all tired. They'd survived a schedule of 48 hours squeezed into a limit of 24 hours.

"All right." Suho gave in. "I'll be back in a bit."

Suho nodded toward her before heading out the door quietly. Victoria couldn't help, but scan her eyes over Donghae feeling even more worried about his well-being. Finally turning she followed Suho out.

"Why don't you go back first?" Suho asked when she stepped out. "We're all about done here."

Victoria's eyes trailed toward the closed door. She actually didn't want to leave yet. A part of her wanted to wait until Donghae was ready to leave as well, so they could go together.

"I think I'll just stay here," Victoria told. "There's a cafeteria downstairs. I'll probably grab a few bites and wait for Donghae."

Suho smiled cheerily, the same way he always did in front of Donghae, "You read my mind. I wasn't about to leave either."

Out of Donghae's original team of three, Suho was always the brightest.

Actually, Tao hadn't wanted tell the truth about Kris being the father of the baby. But Namjoo was hurt and he could still feel her hands trembling within his palm. The very moment she began grasping for her stomach at once had shot sharp pains at his heart. He didn't think he'd been so scarred before. He'd never forget it, how she'd cried and tried to ask if the baby would be ok. Those few words crushed his heart and he realized, she'd wanted to keep it after all.

And he hated it how she'd lost the baby because she'd wanted to save its father.

Tao hated it so much he could feel the anger still surging through his veins. All because of that guy...it was all because of him she was suffering so much.

Still seated in the hallway he stared at the ground until he heard footsteps approaching. Those shoes he recognized. Slowly lifting his head up he stared at uninjured Kris, despising how he'd escaped without a mere scratch on him while Namjoo was lying on the bed with a hole in her stomach.

He had never despised someone to such extent before.

A part of him was glad that Kris didn't look appeased either.

Their eyes locked and Tao slowly rose to his feet, fighting to retain his surging anger threatening to go loose.

"You knew," Kris' quiet voice stated defiantly.

Remaining quiet, Tao stared back. Honestly, there wasn't much he wanted to say to this person.

"You should've said something if you knew," Kris muttered, his eyes narrowing.

"You didn't deserve to know." Tao gritted his teeth before Kris lunged at him and within a flat second his back was pinned to the wall.

Kris stared back at him with bewildered, insane eyes; his hands gripping his shoulders intensely as if they were his anger.

"I have every right to know! That was my baby!"

"Your baby?" Tao repeated with disgust. "Maybe you would have deserved it if you were more aware! If you'd paid more attention to why she was so tired in the first place! If you'd watched out more for her, then you would have known! But you didn't! You didn't!"

Shoving him off, Tao sent his fist flying against Kris' face in order to give him the scratches he'd escaped without.

"All you cared about were your feelings! You didn't care about her!" Tao screamed. "So what gives you the right! What gives you the right?!"

Suddenly enraged Tao sent him flying to the ground before wrestling with him.

"I would have been better suited for her than someone stupid like you!" Tao continued screaming.

After a few swings he felt someone lock their arms around his in order to restrain him, but he was a little too strong for the person intervening.

"Tao! Quit it!" He recognized Suho's agonizing voice. "Tao!"

Flinging his elbow back into Suho's face, he listened to him shout painfully before landing on the ground behind him. Without giving up, Suho lunged back at him and this time Tao let his strength subside as he pulled him back.

Panting and heaving Tao stared at Kris, whose lips were now bleeding. And he was glad to see it.

"You should leave," Suho suggested then watched Tao and Kris stare at each other with scrutiny. Finally turning Kris started down the hallway, part of Tao laughing in victory.

Pushing him slightly, Suho asked underneath his breath, "Are you crazy?!"

"Me?" Tao asked stupefied with the question. "He deserved it!"

"Are you stupid Tao?! What the hell is wrong with you?!" Suho grabbed onto his arm. "He just lost his child! He's in no condition better than Namjoo. Think about how he feels."

"Why should I? It was his fault she went out there! That useless scumbag! It's all his fault!" Tao raised his voice and listened as it bounced off the walls. "And you're telling me to calm down?! After what he did to Namjoo and didn't even know?"

Tao literally felt his voice shake in undeniable rage. Tears literally lit his eyes up again when he thought about how horrid the experience had been for Namjoo.

"She had such a hard time," Tao's voice died down to a low volume, "and you're telling me he doesn't deserve it? Then what about you? Were you any better? Working day and night without letting her rest for a moment? Namjoo must have been so tired. You and Donghae aren't any better either. I...I'm not any better either..."

Tao's voice cracked. "You didn't see her fall. You didn't see that bullet strike her. Nor did you see her try to touch her stomach and cry for the baby." Tears slipped down his eyes, "You weren't there to see how painful it was. So don't be lecturing me about what the is wrong with me."

Shoving Suho out of the way, Tao walked off into the hallway feeling remorse and useless as ever.

He'd thought, even if he didn't really like how the child was Kris', he could have been a good father to the child. Tao would have raised the baby just fine. He would have done it and he knew he could have.

But he hated himself because he hadn't been able to hold her back from going out there. And it was his fault she was now like this.

He was the least qualified to be with Namjoo. He didn’t think he'd have the guts to see her when she woke up either.

What right did he have?

And Tao wept as he walked home alone in the dark.

~_____~

Great, Suho wasn't feeling any better than when he'd arrived at the hospital. In the end, he let Tao walk off, assuming he needed the time alone.

Yes, it was true. He should have guessed something was amiss when Namjoo suddenly got so drained from work. He should have known...but he didn't.

Trudging down the hallway he stopped beside the door leading to Chorong's room. He needed a moment to himself.
