Chapter 24: Retaliation

Sura sat in the car with Luhan in silence for a few minutes. She twiddled her thumbs, waiting patiently for him to calm down.

He was still frustrated with himself. He could tell she was patiently waiting for him to stop breathing heavily. He couldn’t even bring himself to look at her face. He was staring at the road, even though the car wasn’t moving.

“A-Are you sick?” He finally asked.

She seemed relieved to hear her voice. She chuckled nervously. “No, of course not!”

He could hear something was off about the way she spoke and couldn’t help but think she was lying. “You’re always going to the hospital. If you’re sick, you need to tell me, because I–”

“I’m really not sick. I promise,” she swore. “Because you what?” She asked quickly, realizing she had interrupted him.

“I… I don’t want to feel extra guilty about breaking up with you if you’re ill or something…” He lied. He had almost blurted out that he liked her. He could see the disappointment on her face and couldn’t help but quickly add, “I don’t hate you, you know.”

A small smile crept up on her face. “I know you don’t,” she replied. “You like me,” she said boldly.

He froze. She had clearly seen through his act. He had never been very good at pretending.

“... And I like you too,” she confessed.

He nervously pressed his lips tightly. He felt her hand rub his supportively. He swallowed, trying to contain his urge to embrace her. Instead, he firmly grabbed her shoulders. “It… It doesn’t matter. We can’t be together.” He looked at her in the eyes earnestly. This was much better than lying to her and pretending to not give a damn about her.
