I give up on trying. The more I try the more I hurt others.

“Juri, you have a call from Baekhyun, he is asking for you.”

In a hoarse voice, I yelled back, “Tell him I’m not in, tell him to stop calling!”

Flipping over to the other side of my bed, I reached for the covers and hid myself in it. My head was throbbing, a terrible headache had conquered me. With 3 consecutive sleepless nights, it was no wonder that my body was tired out.

“Juri,”

I cursed internally, can everyone stop bothering me? “WHAT? If it’s Baekhyun tell him I am not in-”

“It’s a lady,” I jumped out of my bed and darted towards the living room. On the sofa sat a lady, clad in a white blouse and a simple navy blue pencil skirt.

She stretched out her arms and introduced herself, “I’m Victoria, Kyungsoo’s adoptive sister. You must be Juri, the one who is handling my brother’s case.”

My lifeless voice replies, “Yes, but I won’t be handling it anymore. I’ve decided to pass it over to the police.”

As I explained, the lady’s face turns crestfallen, “A pity, I was about to offer you a scholarship if you had accepted.”

“What…? A scholarship?” my voice awkwardly squeaks.

“But since you’re not doing this case anymore, I’ll write back to your school’s principal then. He can keep the scholarship for someone else…”

I knew a scholarship meant everything to my mum. Ever since my dad passed on, my family had been low on finances. For all my years, I have applying for scholarships and bursaries. I knew that I needed this scholarship so that it would ease my mum’s burden.

A sudden thought brings me to an abrupt halt, does this mean that I am accepting a bribe? If I continue investigating, not only will Mum be hurt but also all the people around me.

But a scholarship! With that, my worries are all erased.

Could I bring myself to betrayal just only to satisfy my worries?

“I’m the scholarship will write off your uncertainties. And I really beg of you to find my brother soon, it’s been a hard time without him. Thank you so much, Juri.”

Standing up from the sofa, I strode over to the door and opened it.

I had accepted the offer.

There was no turning back.

Not anymore.
