Who are you?

Memories

Chapter eight:

“Yoseob ah! Take off that silly hat of yours! It’s so childish! You’re going to be meeting Lucica soon! That’s just going to turn her off!” My mom scolded me.

I sighed and removed the hat gently. I wore it wherever I went. It was so comfortable, and so warm. For a strange reason, whenever I wore it, I would feel…happy. Really happy.

Suddenly, the door opened and a girl walked in.

“Annyeonghasaeo! I’m Lucica! Nice to meet you.” She bowed at us.

She was really glamorous, her long brown hair tumbling down her slim figure. She had put on many expensive-looking jewelry, and had caked on lots of makeup. Although there was no doubt that she was pretty, she didn’t attract me at all.

“Annyeonghasaeo, Lucica dear,” My mom beamed. “I’m Mrs. Yang, and this is your fiancé, Yang Yoseob.” She nudged me, silently commanding me to greet Lucica.

I sighed. “Annyeonghasaeo, I’m Yoseob. Nice to meet you.”

Lucica smiled, turning to my mother. “You are his mother? I thought you were his sister!”

Oh great. A classic bootlick. I rolled my eyes. Obviously, my mom bought her story.

“Oh, sweetie!” My mom laughed. “You’re too kind! Such good manners, too! Come, sit next to Yoseob! He really needs to learn more from you!”

For the whole meal, I was annoyed by everything Lucica did. She spent the whole time bragging to my mom about how rich she was, how talented she was and how many awards she had won. It found it incredibly arrogant and incredibly annoying. To make things worse, my mom couldn’t stop gushing as she showed off. Seriously? If she thinks that showing off could impress me, she was way off track.

When the food arrived, she refused to take a single bite out of it, claiming that it was “fattening” and would “bloat her”. I rolled my eyes. I couldn’t stand girls who were like that. Why were that always so obsessed over these sort of things? I’d like to see a girl eating her heart out, without caring about the “number of calories” she was consuming.

Lastly, when the bill came, Lucica offered to pay for the meal, even after my mother insisted that she would do so. Although my mom thought that was “incredibly polite and kind”, I thought she was just simply showing off how rich she was and looking down on us.

After the meal, my mom made me send Lucica home.

“Yoseob oppa,” she giggled in her annoyingly high-pitched voice.

Oppa? We barely even knew each other and she was calling me her OPPA?

“Thanks for sending me back home! You’re such a sweetheart!”

I rolled my eyes again. She sickened me.

“Anyway,” she said, giving me a kiss on the check. “See ya, hubby!” She winked and left.

EWWWWWW. Her kiss was disgusting. It was all sloppy and …. Ewwwwww. And her wink, it was incredibly cheesy and it gave me the goosebumps.

That girl was unbelievable.

I would rather die than marry this kind of spoilt, arrogant, stuck-up, annoying brat.

After sending Lucica back home, I didn’t want to go back home. So I walked around the neighbourhood abit.

Wait.

What was that delicious aroma?

Where was it coming from?

Why does it smell so familiar?

I headed towards the direction of the smell. It was coming from the food street nearby.

There was a petite, adorable girl selling kimchi fried rice.

Kimchi fried rice? I never remembered trying that before, but it smelled heavenly.

I HAD to try it.

“Excuse me,” I said to the girl. “One bowl of kimchi fried rice please.”

“That’ll be 2 dollars!” The girl said as she turned around.

When I looked into her huge, brown eyes, that warm, happy feeling came back to me again.

When I looked at her, I felt this connection. Had I met her before?

She gasped, dropping the bowl of kimchi rice onto the floor.

IU’S POV:

OH MY GOD.

It was Kikwang oppa! I couldn’t believe it! I thought I had lost him forever.

I couldn’t describe how happy I was to see him.

“Kikwang oppa?” I gave him a huge hug. “You’re back! I thought I lost you forever! I thought I would never see you again! You pabo! Why did you leave without saying a word? Did you know how worried I was? Don’t ever do something like that again!”

Kikwang oppa shifted uncomfortably out of my hug. What was wrong?

I looked at him, confused.

“Look…” he mumbled awkwardly. “I think you got me mixed up with another guy…I don’t know who you are…”

WHAT?

I looked at him carefully. He looked exactly like Kikwang oppa – the same mushroom hair, the same huge eyes, and the same teddy bear hat I bought for him when we first went out together.

Then I laughed. He was obviously playing with me.

I whacked him. “Yah! Kikwang oppa! Don’t play with me here! Don’t you know how worried I was?”
He looked really confused. “I’m not kidding, miss…I really really don’t know who you are…sorry…” He turned to leave.

“Wait!” I called out desperately. “Don’t you remember me? I’m Ji Eun!”

He shook his head.

“Ji Eun! Remember? Last week, we went to the beach? And you would sell kimchi fried rice with me? You went to buy kimchi for me, and then you got lost?”

He still had a blank look.

“I’m sure it’s you!” I was desperate now. “You…you look exactly the same! You’re even wearing that teddy bear hat I bought for you!” I pointed at my bunny hat.

“You see? Don’t you remember? We got these together?”

“Miss, I really don’t know who you are. I’m not Kikwang oppa, I’m Yang Yoseob. I’ve never heard of the name Ji Eun before. And as for this teddy bear hat, I don’t remember you buying it for me. It was just there. I’m sorry, I’m leaving now…” he said, paying me 2 dollars and leaving with a bowl of kimchi fried rice.

I couldn’t believe it.

He didn’t remember me?

But…I was sure that was Kikwang oppa! 100% sure!

How?

What happened to him?

Why couldn’t he remember anything that had happened in the past month?

What to do?

Yoseob’s POV:

That was…weird.

Although I was positive I didn’t know her, I felt this connection when I looked at her.

Was it possible that I really did know her?

But then, why was she calling me Kikwang oppa? I was 100% sure my name was Yoseob, not Kikwang.

And what did she mean when she said she bought me the hat? I couldn’t recall anything about that hat. All I knew was that when I woke up, and the hat was there.

This was so confusing.

I took a bite out of the kimchi fried rice I had bought.

It tasted delicious, yet strangely familiar.

That’s weird…I’ve never tried kimchi fried rice before, why did I feel that I’ve been eating it for my whole life?

And its taste…it tasted like something.

It tasted like home.

Something had happened, something important. I couldn’t seem to remember it.

But I was determined to find out.
