Chapter fifteen:

[ONE MONTH LATER…]

IU’s POV:

It had been a month since I left for Incheon.

A month since I left Yoseob.

Until now, I still could not get him off my mind.

He was in my mind every second of every day.

He was even in my dreams, refusing to go away.

I tried to forget him. I really did.

I couldn’t

How I missed that smile.

How I missed that laugh.

That aegyo.

That voice.

That face.

UGH. Snap out of it, Lee Ji Eun!

He’s gone.

YOU were the one who left him

YOU broke HIS heart

YOU will never EVER see HIM again.

In Incheon, I was still selling kimchi fried rice as the food street.

I was still living all alone.

I refused to let myself fall in love with anyone else.

If I couldn’t have Yoseob, I would not go for anyone.

I wonder how Yoseob is doing

I walked past a newspaper stand, and saw Yoseob’s face on it.

Oh my god.

“Ahjussi, one copy of the newspaper please!”

The old man handed me a copy of the newspaper.

Yoseob was on the headlines.

I read on.

Oh.

He was getting married with Lucica tomorrow.

The two companies were merging, and making more money than ever.

I should be happy for him, I really should.

He’d be better off with Lucica than me.

I wonder if he has been thinking of me

What if he really likes Lucica?

Ji Eun! That’s a good thing!

No, it’s not! How could he get married so quickly?

How could he forget about me so quickly?

I sighed, throwing the newspaper in the rubbish bin.

He’s getting married already, Ji Eun! NOW can you finally give up?

I knew the answer to that question.

Yoseob’s POV:

It had been a month since Ji Eun had left me.

I still couldn’t forget her, no matter how hard I tried.

Yoseob! I scolded myself. You’re getting married tomorrow, and you’re still thinking about her?

But…I wonder how she’s going in Incheon.

Is she okay? Does she force herself to work everyday?

Oh no! What if she wears herself out again, just like that last time?

What if she’s sick? She has no one to take care of her!

What if she falls down into the river again? Who will save her?

Aishh…stop thinking about her Yoseob, and smile for the camera!

I was at a photography studio with Lucica, and we were posing for the millionth wedding shot.

In this shot, I had to give her a piggyback ride.

-FLASHBACK-

“Come on,” I crouched in front of her. “Get on my back”

She hesitated. “It’s okay!” She protested. “I can walk!”

I rolled my eyes playfully. “Yeah right. Now get on!”

She got onto my back. I pretended not to be able to lift her up.
“Ughhh…” I groaned. “You’re so heavy…”

She must have thought I was serious, because she hopped off my back frantically, landing on the floor with a ‘thud’.

“You pabo! I was kidding!” I helped her up and gave her a piggyback ride.

She wrapped her arms around my neck and rested her chin on my shoulder.

-END OF FLASHBACK-

I sighed. It wasn’t the same. When I was giving Ji Eun a piggyback ride, it felt so comfortable. She was so soft. It felt perfect.

But now, piggybacking Lucica felt like piggybacking a hard rock.

It was extremely uncomfortable.

And awkward.

After finally finishing the photo shoot, we went back home. As usual, I did not say a word to her.

When I got back home, I saw Lucica’s parents chatting with my parents. They were discussing about me and Lucica again.

“I can’t believe you two lovebirds are getting married tomorrow!” My mother gushed.

Lovebirds? Please.

“I can’t wait, Yoseob oppa! Tomorrow, you’ll finally be mine!” Lucica wrapped her arms around me.

I forced a smile. “Yeah…can’t wait.”

I was heading to my room to rest when I suddenly heard Lucica calling her father.

“Appa! I need to talk to you. In private.” She pulled her father up to the guest room.

I shouldn’t have been eavesdropping, but I was desperate to find out what they were talking about.

So I followed them, and stood outside the guest room, with my ear pressed against the door.

“Appa! Yoseob still doesn’t seem to be enthusiastic about the wedding! Don’t tell me he’s still seeing THAT GIRL?” Lucica was complaining.

“There’s no way.” Her father said dryly. “Because she’s not in Seoul.”

Wait. How did Lucica’s father know about this?

Lucica was apparently surprised too, because she gasped.

“How do you know?”

“Simple. One month ago, when you told me about that girl, I went to pay her a visit. At first, I offered her a hundred thousand dollars to give up Yoseob for good, but she refused. Then I threatened to destroy Yoseob’s family and make them bankrupt if she didn’t agree to leave.” He laughed. “That did the trick. It was much easier than I thought. I didn’t even need to pay her anything! So you can just relax and get married happily tomorrow, my dear Lucica, because Lee Ji Eun is far, far away. Nothing, and no one can ruin this wedding for you!”

“You’re the best, appa!”

I couldn’t believe it.

All those words she said to me, at the train station, they were just an excuse for her to leave.

She said those words to protect me.

She left me to prevent Lucica’s family from ruining my family.

Aishhh...that idiot!

Why did she do that?

I couldn’t care less if we got bankrupt!

I couldn’t care less about money.

SHE was the most important thing to me. I didn’t care about money.

How could she think that by leaving, she was doing me a favour?

Why didn’t she tell me?

“I won’t bother you anymore. You and live your life. We have nothing else to say to each other then.”

I groaned. How could I have said such harsh words to her, when all she was trying to do was to protect me? She must have been so hurt.

What if she found out I was getting married? How would she feel?
Aishh…there was no time to waste!

I’m so sorry, Ji Eun.

I’m coming to get you.
