Chapter five:

“Wake up~ It’s time to go out to play~”

I felt someone nudge me gently as I woke up the next day.

When I opened my eyes, I saw Kikwang oppa looking down at me, smiling.

I yawned. “Good morning, oppa! What time is it?”

“8am!”

“Aishh…you could have let me sleep in longer~ I’m going back to sleep!” I hit him.

“But…it’s our day off! There’s so many things I want to do you with Ji Eun!” He whined. “And there’s so little time! Wake up! Wake up!” He started shaking me.

I groaned. “Fine…fine…I knew I shouldn’t have suggested an outing.”

After getting up, we started preparing our picnic.

“Let’s see…” I looked at the ingredients. “What should we make?”

“Kimchi fried rice!” He said, his lips.

“Yah! Aren’t you sick of it? We eat it practically every day!” I looked at the ingredients. “I know! We could make bentos!”

“Bentos? What are they?” He asked, wrinkling his nose in confusion.

“They’re sticky rice with ingredients, silly! Hmm…and we could make sushi, and miso soup, and we could have cookies for dessert…”

Soon, we started preparing the food. I prepared the rice and egg rolls while Kikwang oppa arranged them into the bento boxes.

“Look,  Ji Eun!” He said, showing the boxes to me proudly. “This one is for me, and this one is for you!”

I burst of laughing. He made the bentos look like us. For his bento meal, he had arranged the sticky rice into a square, and put seaweed neatly around the rice to represent his adorable mushroom hair. He used two egg rolls as his eyes and kimchi as his wide smile. He did the same for my bento meal, except he put more seaweed for mine and made my face circular. He even put two carrots on the bento to represent my rosy cheeks!

They were so cute!

“You forgot this!” I squished extra sticky rice onto his bento meal. “To represent your chubby face!”

“Yah! I’m not fat, you are!” He pouted and did the same for my bento meal. We were laughing uncontrollably.

By noon, we finished making the food. We packed them and left the house, excited for our outing.

“Here we are,” I said, laying the picnic mat onto the soft grass. “Seoul garden!”

 “I’m hungry, Ji Eun! Me want food! Me want eat!” He complained.

“Okay okay!” I laid out the food. “Sheesh!”

I couldn’t stop laughing as I ate my bento meal. It was amazing how much it resembled me!

After the meal, we strolled along the park.

“It’s so pleasant here!” Kikwang oppa smiled, enjoying the breeze on his face. “And so comfortable!” He started rolling up and down on the grass.

“How old are you, oppa?” I laughed. “If you continue doing that I may have to pretend I don’t know you~”

“Yah! Don’t you dare!” He said and dragged me down with him, tickling me non-stop. “Say you know me! Say you know me!” He whined.

“No! No!” I squealed. “Okay, okay fine! I know you! Happy?” I gasped for breath while Kikwang oppa was smiling smugly.

We spent some time taking turns to roll down the steep, grassy hill nearby. I never believed I would actually do it, and I couldn’t believe how much fun it was. It was so exhilarating.

“Wheeee!” Kikwang squealed as he rolled down the hill for the hundredth time.

I was laughing so hard I didn’t realize that he rolled over the edge of the hill and landed…

Into the same river where my brother drowned in.

“Kikwang!” I screamed and ran over to the edge of the hill.

What to do? What to do? What if he couldn’t swim? I couldn’t let the same thing happen to him!

I looked around. There was no one nearby. What to do?

There was only one thing I could do. Something that I regretted not doing six years ago.

I jumped into the river.
