Why did you come?

Memories

Chapter twenty-two:

Yoseob’s POV:

I hung up the phone.

What to do? What to do?

Should I call the police?

But they had warned me not to.

I couldn’t risk Ji Eun’s life just like that!

I couldn’t risk losing her over and over again, this time for good.

I mentally heard her screams of pain in my mind again.

There was no time to waste.

My phone beeped.

It was from an unknown number.

Come to the warehouse at the far end of Seoul park.

Come alone.

If you dare to call the police, or bring anyone along…

I immediately got into my car and drove to Seoul park.

IU’s POV:

I felt the men throw another punch at me, this time hitting me directly in the stomach.

I groaned again, biting my lip, trying to hold my tears back in.

“Do you think he’ll really come alone, boss?”

The leader grinned. “Yes. I warned him about the consequences if he didn’t come alone.”

They looked at me, smirking.

“Can I punch him first?” Another asked eagerly.

“No!” I shrieked. “Don’t you dare touch him!”

I received a tight slap on my cheek. It stung so badly.

They were about to slap me again, when the door swung open.

“Ji Eun!” A very familiar voice called out.

No!

No no no no no!

Why did you come?

Why?

“Yang Yoseob!” I shrieked. “Run away NOW! Get out of here! Go! I told you not to come here! LEAVE! NOW!”

The door shut.

Yoseob ignored me. He ran towards me.

“Yoseob! WATCH OUT!” I screamed.

One of the men was behind Yoseob, swinging a baseball bat and aiming for the back of his head.

But I was too late.

The man swung the baseball bat, causing Yoseob to land face down on the floor.

“NO!”

I struggled in my chair, as hard as I could, but I couldn’t free myself.

Yoseob limply tried to stand up, only to be knocked back to the ground again.

“Yang Yoseob.” The leader chuckled and walked towards him. He tread on Yoseob’s fingers and laid all his weight on them, obviously enjoying seeing Yoseob grimace in pain.

“STOP! YOU’RE HURTING HIM!”

“Wh…who are…are you?” Yoseob asked weakly.

“Don’t you remember me, Yoseob? I’m your Uncle Lee! You know, YOUR FATHER’S BEST FRIEND?”

“Uncle Lee?” Yoseob looked up, surprised.

“Oh, NOW you remember me!” Mr. Lee grinned. Then his face hardened. “Then you should be able to remember what your family DID TO ME, HUH? Well, Yang Yoseob. Today, you are going to suffer for your family’s wrongdoings! They betrayed me, and now I want revenge. GET HIM, GUYS!”

Then, all at once, the six men started to pounce onto Yoseob. They pulled him up, and threw hard punches right at his face.

“STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP HITTING HIM PLEASE!” I was crying, struggling as hard as I could. I could feel the ropes binding my wrists to the chair loosening.

One of them then jumped up and threw himself hard onto Yoseob, landing right onto his stomach. He spat out blood.

“YOSEOB! YOSEOB! FIGHT BACK, YOU IDIOT! FIGHT BACK!”

Come on, you stupid ropes. Almost there.

Yoseob weakly stood up, trying to punch one of the men, but they just gave him a hard kick, causing him to collapse again.

“Hand me the metal pipe.” Mr. Lee smirked and walked towards Yoseob slowly.

Yoseob had given up. He was no longer struggling to get up.

His face was covered with blood, and he was clutching his stomach, groaning in pain.

One of the men handed Mr. Lee a long, heavy, metal pipe.

“Goodbye, Yang Yoseob.” Mr. Lee grinned as he lifted the metal pipe over his head, preparing to swing it down.

It hurt badly, but I continued to rub my wrists against the ropes holding them in place. I could feel fresh wounds on my wrists, but I didn’t care.

I had to do something. I couldn’t just sit here and watch the one I love die in front of my very eyes.

It all happened in slow motion.

The ropes around my hands finally broke.

I started to sprint as fast as I could towards Yoseob.

The metal pipe was coming down onto Yoseob’s head.

I didn’t think twice.

I threw myself in front of Yoseob, shielding him from his death.

The next thing I knew, I felt something cold and hard hit the back of my neck.

The pain was unbearable. I could feel my head bleed.

Thank goodness I protected Yoseob.

“Y…Yoseob…” I held his hand weakly.

That was the last thing I did before I out.

Yoseob’s POV:

This was it.

My knees were weak. I could barely breathe, let alone stand up.

I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the impact.

Goodbye, Ji Eun.

I just want to let you know, that meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to me.

If I was given more time, I would have done so much more for you.

I’m sorry for leaving you so early.

I’m sorry for not even giving you a wedding.

I’m sorry.

Did I ever tell you that I love you?

I really do.

Thanks for everything.

Thanks for coming into my life.

Thanks for making me laugh so much

Thanks for making me feel loved

Thanks for making me feel less alone

Thanks for making me feel like someone actually cared for me

Thanks for making life meaningful for me

Thank you, Ji Eun.

The pipe was coming down.

I heard the loud impact of the pipe crashing down.

I didn’t feel anything at all.

Strange.

“Y…Yoseob…” I heard a weak voice call out beside me, and a soft hand wrap around mine.

Wait.

I opened my eyes.

Then I gasped.

Ji Eun was lying beside me, her hand around mine.

A metal pipe was beside her, and it was stained with blood.

I turned to look at her head.

It was bleeding. Horribly.

Her face was ghostly pale and she had passed out.

She took the blow for me.

“Ji Eun!” I shook her desperately, trying to wake her up. “JI EUN!”

But she eyes remained shut. She was motionless.

“Wake up! Wake up! Do you hear me Ji Eun? Wake up!”

“Enough of this!” Mr. Lee shouted angrily. “Finish them both off!”

I hugged Ji Eun protectively. I would not allow them to lay a finger on her.

Suddenly, I heard noises outside the warehouse.

“Do you hear that, boss?”

“Shhh! Quiet!” Mr. Lee looked at me. “You’re lucky today. We’ll come back to finish you off tomorrow. Enjoy your last few hours together.”

They left the warehouse, and slammed the door shut, locking it.
