Chapter Three: Suspicious Behavior
FatedWe continued talking for several minutes untill, slowly, the other boys made their ways over to us. Once they all arrived we stood up and Xiumin began introducing me to them all and teaching me their names.
“This is Kris. He’s our duizhang.” The boy he pointed to bowed quickly. He was very tall and seemed quite serious at the moment. “Next is Luhan, then that is Tao.” The first was a bright and happy looking boy. He smiled brightly and bowed. The other was quite tall like the leader and had a striking appearance at first. He seemed quite fierce. Xiumin leaned into me and spoke quietly. “He is our cute maknae. He seems scary at first, but he’s really totally sweet and adorable.” I giggled and looked at him. Under the dark eyes I was able to see what he meant. He didn’t really seem so scary as mush as just nervous. He smiled timidly as he bowed quickly. Hiding behind him in the shadows was the final boy. Lay, was it? The Yi Xing look-a-like. “Lay! Why are you standing back there like that? Come meet Nina!” Xiumin ran over and grabbed his arm and pulled him over. “He can be quite shy. Nina, this is Lay.” Xiumin smiled as he held onto his arm. Lay bowed awkwardly. I bowed back. Once he stood back up he began rubbing the back of his neck again. He was nervous. I tilted my head. He really does look like that guy.
“Lay,” I spoke in Chinese now, “You wouldn’t happen to have a brother would you?” I asked.
“Wo ma? Mei you. (Me? No.)” He shook his head. I frowned. This was truly strange. From the other end of the line, I heard a muffled laugh, followed by a few coughs. I looked over at Kris. For some reason the serious leader had found that funny. I tilted my head.
“Sorry.” He cleared his throat and looked away, still grinning. Lay shot him a look. Seriously, what is wrong with these boys? I just looked at them strangely and continued introducing myself.
A few of them left soon to continue preparing. I hung around and spoke with the rest. Luhan and I got along very well. I discovered that he was from Beijing and I had just spent a lot of time there not too long ago and really enjoyed it there. We talked about lots of places and he told me about growing up there. He was really sweet. We talked for awhile before he noticed one of s standing all alone.
“Yi Xi- I mean, Lay! Come talk with us!” I looked up in shock. What had he called him? I asked him as Lay was walking over. “Oh! Yi Xing. That’s Lay’s real name.” He smiled sheepishly at me. I blinked furiously, absolutely freaked out now. Lay slowly approached us. He looked at me timidly and I just stared back.
“Yi Xing?” His eyes widened and he nodded slowly, looking at Luhan. I swallowed. So this really is him? I was silent for a moment.
“Luhan!” Kris yelled over. Luhan smiled in apology and ran off to join him. This left ‘Yi Xing’ and I all alone. We were awkward for a moment. I chewed the inside of my cheek and he rubbed his neck out of nervousness. He finally spoke,
“…We’re you… confused?” He asked slowly, choosing the right words. He smiled sweetly. I looked at him.
“I still am…” I finally mumbled. He laughed.
“You asked earlier if I had a brother earlier because I reminded you of someone you met on the street earlier, right?” I nodded. “That was me. You were right. I could tell you were watching me earlier, completely confused.” He chuckled, “But you can imagine my surprise when a girl on the street asks me for directions to the same station that I would be going to later. And you didn’t seem to know me either. It was quite surprising for me.” He grinned.
“So, that was you. You… you’re the one that gave me his number?” He blushed,
“Yeah…” He rubbed his neck. I smiled.
“You know, you ran off before I could even give you mine.” I blushed slightly and so did he.
“A-Ahh. I did, didn’t I?” He chuckled. “Sorry. I was acctually a bit… worried so I didn’t really realize…” I tilted my head in confusion. “Well, it’s a bit dangerous for me to hand out numbers to strangers… Since I’m a singer and all… But I’m glad I did.” He looked back at me sweetly. I blushed and smiled back.
“Lay! Come on! We have to go!” Kris yelled over to him. I thought I saw Lay, or Yi Xing, give him a look. He turned back to me.
“Alright. I have to go. I’ll see you later. Oh, and good luck translating.” He smiled sweetly before running off to join the others.
“Bye Nina! See you soon! Translate for us well, okay?” Xiumin yelled over to me in Korean. I waved back.
“Ne~” They all turned to leave.
