Chapter 5: Start the Mission

The Heartbreakers

“You’re…” Kyuhyun stared at the pile of clothes Seohyun folded only to see two shirts folded. “not bad… not at all. Two folded shirts in thirty minutes. Fantastic!” Kyuhyun mockingly clapped his hands as he walked over towards his trainee.

“This .” Seohyun grunted.

“No, you .” Kyuhyun teasingly smirked at Seohyun witnessing her fight over her weakness. Seohyun glared at him instead. “Well, of course! Vampires , don’t we?” Kyuhyun laughed at his own silliness.

“Can we proceed to the next, please? This is a waste of time!” Seohyun growled.

“Alright, geez. Relax.” Kyuhyun said as he started digging again in the bunch of Kris’ clothes. “Kris loves jackets. So much.” He started throwing the jackets to the chair beside the table and soon it became a pile as well. Seohyun’s jaw almost dropped that Kris’ clothes were mostly composed of jackets. That pile of jacket counted even with the shirts!

“I’m missing a date for here! Could you please be faster?” Seohyun tapped his shiny ankle-boot heels on the floor.

“I already cancelled your two dates in the morning.” Kyuhyun confidently said.

“What?!”

“Save the thanks later. I called them earlier and told them I was your boyfriend and they should stop seeing you.” Kyuhyun answered and finally took a pair of pants and smiled as if it was a great success.

“So for the whole morning I’ll be stuck with you here?—wait! You’re not asking me to smell that, are you?” Seohyun said stepping back a little gazing at the pants Kyuhyun was holding.

“Save your erted thoughts. Here. Catch.” Kyuhyun took a leather wallet from one of the pants’ back pockets. “Return that to the laundry shop before Kris goes to pick his clothes.”

“So you stole them from the laundry shop…” Seohyun slowly nodded as she flipped the wallet open and scanned uninterestingly the bills of money.

“Anything in there?” Kyuhyun asked peeking at the wallet.

“Nothing interesting.” Seohyun answered as she started picking the different cards inside the wallet. “Ooh. His brothers.” She looked at the wallet-sized photo. “They all look so young, I wonder how many years have they spent in their eternal lives…” She said while looking at each of his brother’s faces. She surmised that Kris must be close to his brothers. Each of the boys looked pretty handsome, they have fair faces and indeed all attractive. She thought that maybe making a mortal fall for them must be the easiest job they could do.

“Even Soo Man-shi didn’t know about their existence. Plus we haven’t met them in hell, have we?” Kyuhyun said. “Maybe they were newly-born vampires before we stepped out of Lucifer’s bloody place called hell.”

Seohyun nodded in agreement. She stopped at Kris’ sight on the photo she was holding. As usual, his serious face showed. It’s always a mystery for her why a vampire like him rarely smiled. An eternal life and incredible strength were bestowed to vampires like them, who wouldn’t find it easy to even use a number of muscles to smile a little?

She caught herself staring at it for a while so she blinked twice and placed back the photo inside the wallet.

“Get going, their training should be finished by now too. He shouldn’t reach the laundry shop before you.” Kyuhyun said shooing her out of the room. “I’ll see you tomorrow for training. Physical one. Prepare tonight, okay?” He finally said before pushing Seohyun out of the room.

“If I should return this, what will I do for the rest of the morning that you’ve marked my dates done?!” Seohyun asked. If there wouldn’t be missions, she’d likely spend her hours training with his mentor. She always believed that there will always be rooms for improvement.

“You’ll figure out one.” Kyuhyun winked, “Now if you happen to see Krystal, tell her to proceed here for our training.”

“Krystal’s away, she’s breaking hearts in school.” Seohyun said while she put the wallet inside her jacket's pocket.

“Oh, my mistake. I meant Chanyeol.” Kyuhyun mentally slapped himself.

“But… the clothes inside. Shouldn’t I bring those back to the laundry too?” Seohyun asked. “Chanyeol would see those.”

“No, let’s save this for future purposes. Go now so I can hide them.” Kyuhyun said and closed the door but it opened again, “Tell him to proceed to the main hall instead. We’ll have some physical training instead.” Then he closed the door again. Seohyun just sighed at her mentor.

She walked to the laundry shop. But from a distance, she saw Kris just left the training complex as well so she ran fast towards the laundry.

The lady in charge smiled at her. She clutched at Kris’ wallet inside her pocket.

“I’ll go get yours, Ma’am.” The lady said as they exchanged smiles. Seohyun checked on her name on the list and signed across her name. In a few seconds, the little door bells sounded as someone entered the shop. Seohyun looked at the newcomer and wasn’t surprised to see it was Kris. They looked at each other but Seohyun looked away first, clenching tighter on the wallet inside her pocket.

The lady came back and welcomed Kris but she turned to Seohyun. “The girls are still folding them, could you wait for a while?” Seohyun politely nodded and smiled at her. “Yes, sir?” The lady turned to Kris.

“Claiming my clothes.” Kris said in his husky voice. The lady took the list from you.

“Name, please?”

“Kris. Kris Wu.” He uttered. Seohyun looked away feeling guilty that Kris’ clothes are gone and Kyuhyun probably made a way for his name to be erased from the list.

“Could you please check your name on it? I couldn’t seem to see it.” The lady handed the list to Kris. Kris looked at each names written on it.

“I’m sorry your clothes might take a while…” The lady spoke to Seohyun again.

“It’s okay.” Seohyun  softly smiled at her then an idea popped in her head. “You don’t need to fold them, I can do it myself.”

“But… Ma’am.”

“No, it’s okay. I insist.” Seohyun smiled making sure Kris was aware of their conversation.

Kris reached the end of the list and he couldn’t believe his name wasn’t written on it.

“There must be some mistake. I could tell which my clothes are.” Kris said as he handed the list back to the lady.

“Come with me inside then.” She said then turned to Seohyun again, “I’ll go get your clothes. Please sit for a while.” She pointed at the chairs near the door.

Kris put down his bag on one of the chairs as he followed the lady inside the laundry rooms. This was the perfect time for Seohyun to sneak Kris’ wallet inside his bag.

And so she did just before Kris came out empty handed with the lady carrying her bag of clothes.

Kris let out a frustrated sigh as he took his bag and hung it on his shoulder.

“What happened? Didn’t you see yours?” Seohyun asked innocently.

“I don’t know. I just brought them here yesterday, I’m sure I did.” He said as the two of them walked out of the laundry shop together.

“Maybe one of your brothers got them already? Sometimes my sisters do that to play pranks on me.” Seohyun said trying to comfort the disappointed vampire beside her. You passed by Chanyeol and remembered what Kyuhyun asked of you. “Oh, Chanyeol-shi!” She greeted, “our seonsaeng is asking you to proceed to the training complex’s main hall. He’s waiting for you there.” Chanyeol nodded and looked at Kris before shifting his gaze back to you.

“Arasseoyo.” He slightly bowed in respect.

“Won’t you ask him?” Seohyun softly asked Kris. Kris looked up at Chanyeol before he can walk away from them completely.

“Hey, Yeol.” Kris called. “Have you seen my clothes? Did anyone got them this morning?”

Chanyeol thought for a moment, “I haven’t seen any clothes at home. Didn’t we bring them all yesterday to the laundry shop? We haven’t claimed ours yet.” Then he looked at Kris, “Why?”

Kris shook his head and sighed, “Nothing.” Then Chanyeol turned to his back and continued walking.

Seohyun cursed Kyuhun inside her head a million times. Stealing someone’s clothes is just the stupidest idea of training her this morning. “Do you have anything to do this morning?” She asked Kris.

Kris thought that maybe he can visit the mall in the city and shop for new clothes. “I already ditched my date and she didn’t call me. I think it’s already off.” Kris said.

“Good, then maybe I can accompany you shop for new clothes. What do you say?” Seohyun gleamed and her simple smile somehow brightened the mood of the stiff vampire beside her.

Kris thought about it but agreed with the idea. As much as he wanted to shop alone, Seohyun’s a stepping stone to earn the trust of TVXQ to avoid them doubting the Exo’s presence in SM Town. So he nodded in agreement. “Aren’t you busy?”

“Kyuhyun called my dates this morning and told them he was my boyfriend.” She chuckled, “I’m free this morning.” She said as they walked towards the direction of Girls’ Generation’s house to return her clothes first inside her room. Regretting she tried to impress Kris that she can fold the bunch of clothes by herself.

As Seohyun was inside their house, Kris declined her offer for him to go inside to wait for her. Kris was standing on the balcony of the pink crib with his arms crossed on his chest as he was leaning on the railings. His mind wondered on how the interior of the cute pink house must have looked but he remembered he was the one who refused to enter. His lost thoughts were interrupted when he heard the nearby bushes wangling. It produced irritating sounds to his ear and disturbed his peaceful thoughts. He uncrossed his arms and looked at the forest that was a few meters away from the Girls’ Generation’s house. The sound suddenly stopped. Kris thought it might be some animal playing around.

But just before he could look back at the pink crib, the animal playing behind the nearby forest made sound again against the bushes. Kris grew furious—sensing something dangerous. He wanted to draw himself closer to the bushes, but he looked back at the house just in front of him, it’ll be better to stay in his place than to walk a few yards away. He thought his imaginations were working too much. It was a relief that Seohyun finished fixing herself and got out of fancy door of their house.

“I’m sorry I took longer than I should have.” Seohyun said flipping her long straight hair behind her shoulders. She changed into a black skinny denim pants and a leather jacket zipped up to her neckline from her sunny dress this morning.

“Ooh, costume change.” Kris muttered.

“Yeah, I have to meet one of my victims later this afternoon.” Seohyun explained, searching her bag for something.

“What are you looking for?” Kris’ attention shifted quickly from the bushes to Seohyun’s relentless search for something inside her bag.

“Some motorcycle keys. I borrowed it from Sooyoung. I know it’s just….” Seohyun finally sighed, “here.” She raised the keys and wiggled it allowing it to produce sound. “Okay, let’s go.” She put it back inside her bag making sure she’ll find it quickly later.

They started walking on the pathwalk towards the forest which is the only way towards the city. That’s why only vampires have access to the SM Town—it’s hidden behind the enormous forest.

“What’s the motorcycle for?” Kris boringly asked.

“I have a date named Himchan. He works in a car repair shop. And that’s pretty much our story. We met when I brought a damaged race car.” Seohyun chuckled at the thought of it—how many times did she have to disguise as different persons just to break hearts.

“So for tonight, you’re a car racer, that’s cool.” Kris said. They finally reached the end of the path walk. “How about we race to the city?”

Seohyun smirked. “To the Central Mall.”

“One.” Kris started the count.

“Two.” Seohyun followed.

“Three!” They said at the same time as they vanished in the forest making the trees sway with how fast they were running.

It happened for only a few seconds.

Kris appeared in a narrow street near the Central Mall. He smiled to himself thinking how fast he was as if he’s a vampire. He mentally praised himself adapting a vampire’s behavior well. When he reached the mall, there were too many people. He wondered where could you be… or when you will arrive.

He looked around him, he saw no signs of you. He didn’t mind it so he went to the nearest men clothing shop that he could see from where he was standing. He walked towards it and entered. There were only few people inside.

He scanned the shirts hanged on one of the numerous stands in the clothing shop. He was trying to find his style.

“How about this one?” A familiar voice said. A hand was extended from his right holding a denim jacket with a black shirt inside. “Or maybe not.” She put it back on the racks. Kris was amused. He stared for a while at the female vampire that kept on browsing through the men’s clothes. Seohyun then caught him looking at her, she smiled in return. “What took you so long?” Then she focused back on the men’s clothes.

He laughed quietly at himself. How stupid was he? He didn’t know Seohyun was one of the few people inside the shop when he entered.

“You’re incredibly fast. I thought you were just behind me.” Kris followed Seohyun towards another set of clothes.

“I almost tripped on my way.” Seohyun playfully winked at Kris and raised a hanger of shirt. “How about this?”

Kris just took the hanger from Seohyun and followed her as she continued picking clothes. He liked her taste of fashion so he didn’t argue. “Seriously, you’re… so fast.”

“Yuri-unnie is faster than me.” Seohyun admitted. “There’s a trick. Or a technique if you must take it.”

“Technique?”

“Don’t take the same path your opponent is taking.” Seohyun said, Kris raised his eyebrows not getting her point. “If I take the land, you take the air.”

“So sometimes, you fly?”

“Not really fly, we don’t fly. We’re not angels.” Kris’ nose wrinkled at the mention of his kind. “But I take the way above the trees. Or just in the middle. Because there’s no way you can outrun a vampire if you’ll persistently run behind.” Seohyun raised another shirt and Kris just nodded and took it. “Or change directions. If one takes left, you take right.”

“So that’s why Yuri runs fastest?” Kris asked.

“She works out a lot. And guess who her mentor is.” Kris gave Seohyun a look. “Shindong.” They shared a soft chuckle. “There, go try them.” Seohyun placed another shirt in Kris’ arms and gently pushed him towards the fitting room.

They continued shopping for Kris’ new set of clothes along the mall. They went from shop to shop. They shared simple conversations on the process of finding different clothes for Kris. Both are working hard to get the same goal without knowing it.

It was lunch time and everyone in the mall was taking their lunch.

“Cool. Awful food aroma.” Seohyun wrinkled her nose with the unpleasant scent of the human food as they pass by the different restaurants and food stands.

“It’s all in the mind, I’ve tasted human food before. It’s not that bad.” Lie. Of course Kris eats human food. He’s not a vampire who drinks on the blood of living things. When he wants it, he can eat normal foods that humans eat.

“I still don’t like it.” Seohyun said ignoring the sight of the people eating.

“Come on, just try!” Kris teased. “Wait a sec.” He quickly ran to the bimbimbap stand and bought a box.

“No way.” Seohyun crossed her arms as he watched Kris bought human food. “No, no no. I am not going to eat that.” Seohyun snobbed Kris as they walked side by side again.  Kris fixed the shopping bags on his arms. Some of the shopping bags were actually carried by Seohyun herself as she offered some help.

“It’s delicious! Why don’t you try so you can act more humanly?” Kris asked.

Seohyun cringed at the smell of the rolled rice. “I am not human—“ Her eyes almost bulged out of her eye sockets as Kris swiftly shoved a slice of bimbimbap into . She felt like puking. She looked around for a place to throw up the so called delicious human food by Kris.

“People are looking around. You cannot just spit that.” Kris smiled at Seohyun’s precious facial expression as she bitterly bit the rice roll slowly. Kris took one piece and shoved it in his mouth and happily chewed the food.

Seohyun swallowed hard the little piece of food. Then snatched the bottled water from Kris. She almost finished the whole bottle. “Even water doesn’t taste good.” She closed her eyes tightly at the remaining taste of food in .

“It doesn’t taste like blood of rats.” Kris said as he ate another bite, almost laughing at the ‘pained’ expression of the strongest vampire he knows.
