Chapter 13: The New Clan

The Heartbreakers

“YAH JESSICA JUNG!!!” The cutesy pink house was almost devestated by Donghae’s booming voice. Jessica flinched upon hearing her mentor’s voice; Donghae had been trying to wake her up for quite awhile now and he was starting to get peeved.

She covered her face with a pillow but Donghae persistently tugged at her arm. “Wake up you lazy girl, we’ve got work to do.”

Jessica groaned upon hearing the word ‘work’; she wasn’t like Seohyun or Taeyeon who took their work as heartbreakers seriously. To her, breaking hearts of those silly mortals was the dumbest thing she had ever heard of.

But she was, after all, a member of the elite heartbreakers and that did not stand to mean nothing. Despite her lazy and sluggish nature, she was a very successful heartbreaker even by the Girls' Generation dizzily high standards. In fact, asides from the TVXQ gods, the Super Junior mentors as well as Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun, there was no other vampire that could boast better success at breaking hearts.

When Donghae finally succeeded in pulling the pillow off her face, she quickly covered herself with her blanket. Donghae sighed in frustration. He wondered how he managed to stay her trainer for this long; had it not been for her ability and potential, he'd probably have cast her off as a pupil. He finally gave up trying to wake her up.

“Fine, I’m sending in a few sacks of cucumbers, have the sweetest nightmare you never thought possible.” Donghae was about to walk out of the door when Jessica finally sat up. Donghae smirked upon hearing Sica move.

“I hate you.” Jessica hissed as Donghae turned to face her. She gave him a glare dead into his eyes but he ignored it, childishly walking to the side of her bed. He bent down on her level and looked straight to her eyes.

He ruffled her messy bed hair, “I love you too.”

Jessica gave him another venomous glare and slapped his hand away. He just chuckled at her reaction and said, “I’ll wait for you. Thirty minutes is all you have before the lovely cucumbers join you.”

Then there was a knock on the open door.

Both of them shifted their gaze towards the person by the door. “Am I interrupting anything?” Tiffany asked innocently, blinking her eyes at Donghae and Jessica.

“I’m glad you did,” Jessica smiled sweetly at Fany before shooting mocking glance towards Donghae. “What is it?” Jessica asked, turned back to Tiffany.

“That Kris guy is back. Taeyeon-unnie is not around and I need some help.” Tiffany motioned towards the doorway downstairs, “I can’t think of any excuses to keep him from probing further.”

“Give me a minute.”

Jessica stood up as she stretched her arms up. Tying her hair in a messy bun, she patted her cheeks. Donghae watched her in amusement. Even though she had a bad temper and was really lazy, she never failed to amaze him. He probably liked her more than what should be the case given their relationship. But that was probably also because they knew each other for a long time. Jessica had her ways of captivating him unwittingly, but he knew, almost as a certainty, nothing would happen for they were incapable of love.

Jessica walked passed Donghae and followed Tiffany downstairs. Donghae slipped his hands into his pockets and followed after them.

The tall figure waited outside their doorstep, viewing the majestic mountains in the far distance. Hearing footsteps approach him, he turned around and saw Tiffany with Jessica.

“I heard you’re looking for our youngest sister again,” Jessica said as they stopped by the doorway. Kris stiffened. He knew Jessica was not the friendliest amongst the Girls’ Generation ladies.

“I am.” Kris said, shifting his gaze towards Tiffany. “But today I am respectfully asking you where she is. And I am hoping for an honest answer.” Tiffany swallowed, having lied to him yesterday.

Jessica’s eyes softened. She thought Kris would still be naive in asking for Seohyun’s presence again but this time, she felt a different vibe from him.

“We cannot tell you,” Jessica said. “Not because we think you’ll cause some harm to her but we are not at liberty to tell you.”

Kris clenched his fists on his side. Suddenly, a hand squeezed his shoulder. He glanced sideways, “I can tell you where she is.” Tiffany and Jessica’s eyes widen in shock. How could anyone know of Seohyun’s whereabouts other than themselves?

“We don’t need information from them,” Lay said as his eyes flashed green. “Perhaps we can ask her in person why she’s staying in the city.”

Kris stepped back away from the doorstep, “I beg your pardon. I will take my leave now. Sorry again for interrupting you in whatever you were doing.” He bowed respectfully before walking away with Lay.

Tiffany and Jessica were astounded. They looked at each other but before one of them could break the silence, Donghae shouted from the stairway. “Hey, you have fifteen minutes before those cucumbers arrive.”

The sweet scent kept running inside Seohyun’s head as she served the endless stream of customers from the coffee shop. She wasn’t thinking about the scent of coffee. It was human blood that kept her distracted.

It had been days since she had the rich crimson liquid tainting her lips a seductive red, savouring it as it coursed through ; ever since she started serving her punishment, she had been unable to consume blood from anywhere. Even though there was no blood visibly in sight, she could smell the sweet scent of human blood being pumped through the bodies of her customers.

Her thoughts were brushed off when Yoseob called for help in serving a customer. She hurried to get the coffee and placed them on a tray.

She walked towards the table, placing the piping hot cup of latte on it. “Enjoy your coffee sir,” she muttered. But before she could walk away from the table, a familiar voice spoke.

“So the scent of coffee no longer bothers you then,” the man started. Her eyes widened upon realizing to whom the voice belonged to.

The next thing she knew, she was no longer in the cosy environment of the coffee house.

“Y-YAY! Can’t you see that I’m working?” Seohyun whined as Kris dragged her down the street by her wrist.  His warmth sent shivers down her spine. Kris was always warmer compared to the other vampires but Seohyun had gotten used to it; in fact she had found that she like how his touch felt.

They stopped by an empty alley near the coffee shop.

“Right now you are not.” Kris looked around them and shrugged his shoulders. “And unless you tell me why you’re working there, you are not going anywhere. Not to mention the fact that you are doing so much despite the number of guys present there.”

“Wait a minute.” Seohyun rubbed her wrist that Kris held tightly earlier. “What are you getting at?” Kris casually looked away. “I appreciate your concern but I do not need it. Thanks for coming by. I won’t be seeing you around.” But before she could walk away, Kris stopped her by her arm and spun her around.

His eyes flashed silver, “I don’t trust those guys. What makes you trust them?”

Seohyun’s eyes gleamed in a crimson-gold hue, “Again, I appreciate your concern but I don’t need your opinion.” She took Kris’ hand off her arm. They stared at each other before Seohyun shook her head. “You just wasted your time coming all the way down. Have fun drinking your coffee.”

But Kris grabbed her arm once again. Clearly irritated, Seohyun’s eyes started to gleam in a brilliant gold hue now; it was no longer the imperfect crimson-gold shade she used to possess. She had been growing ever the stronger; and by provoking her, the change in her strength was now evident.  Kris was suddenly pinned up against the brick wall behind him with Seohyun’s arm firmly on his neck. “I will ask you for the first and the last time to leave now!” Seohyun suddenly burst out.

Kris’ silver gaze softened to its normal state. For a reason he couldn’t comprehend, her words pierced him.“I’m sorry.” Kris mumbled.

Seohyun’s grip on him loosened. He took her fist and removed her arm off his neck. “There is a part of me that wanting to complement how great you were. But the other wants to ask you why you had to hide from me, asking your sisters to conceal your whereabouts.”

Seohyun’s eyes turned to its normal colour, “I was not hiding from you. It was my own decision to stay at the city, to take myself away from my usual lifestyle.”

Kris did not believe her words, but before he could utter another word, someone cut him off.

“Seohyun, Junhyung and Hyunseung need some help,” He said, pointing back towards the coffee house. Seohyun glanced at Kris before leaving him.

Kris looked at the guy who called Seohyun. It was the manager of the coffee shop, the one watching Seohyun work. He smirked and approached to him. “I presume you are the manager of the cafe.”

Doojoon stayed still, unfazed by Kris. “While I respect that you are one a customer,  I ask you not to interrupt my workers while they are working.” Kris gazed intently at Doojoon. His was well-built, but did not look human.

“What are you?” Kris asked.

That single question had Doojoon’s eyes flaring in deep hellish shade tangerine. In a blink of an eye, they found themselves fighting in the woods. “What the hell are you?!” Kris asked as he tried to match Doojoon’s punches.

Doojoon gritted his teeth, “You are very unlucky to run to me in the presence of Seohyun.”

“Thanks for that information, but you did not answer my question.” Kris’ eyes turned silver once again. He couldn’t deny the fact that Doojoon was really strong.

They continued throwing punches at each other, until Doojoon jumped away from Kris. “I know you are not human,” Kris said. “But you’re not a vampire, because you stink like a wretched being.”

Doojoon gritted his teeth. His body started transforming into another creature. Kris watched Doojoon as he struggled with his transformation. Kris’ mouth fell agape and in an instant, he had to jump to the nearest yet high branch of a tree.

“A werewolf,” he observed. “They were protectors of land creatures as well as the vampiric race.” Kris forced a smile. “Amusing,” He said before straightening up and jumped from branch to another as he disappeared in the forest.

Seohyun rolled her eyes in frustration as she noticed she was the only one left serving the customers. ‘Where the hell are the others?!’

“Hey you better tell me where the hell are the others or,” she complained to Yoseob and Dongwoon just as Jaejoong appeared behind the two.

“Or what, my dear Miss Seo?” Jaejoong asked, raising his eyebrows.

“Oh, so you have come to replace the other four who just disappeared? Well great. Because right now, I’ll be off from this stupid excuse of a job.” Seohyun removed her name tag and slammed it on the counter. Jaejoong shook his head.

Seohyun walked out of the coffee shop and disappeared onto the street.

Dongwoon shook his head, “Wow. I really can’t picture the two of you together. She’s got a really bad temper.”

Jaejoong chuckled at his remarks.

“Oh you don’t know. She could probably kill every single person she meets.” Jaejoong patted Dongwoon’s shoulder and turned to Yoseob. “Anyway, I’ll make sure she’s back here soon.”

“Of course, we are meant to protect her.” Yoseob said. “However, a mysterious guy dragged her away earlier, just in case you’re wondering where the others are.”

Jaejoong grew curious, “Mysterious guy?”

The howling of the wolves echoed through the woods, furs in different shades. They had huge bodies and would have looked outright intimidating to any mere mortal or weaker supernatural beings. The land protectors gathered to catch up with their leader. Having just turned into their wolf-forms just moments earlier, they started transforming back to their human form upon finding him all alone in the forest.

“Stupid ,” Doojoon hissed, dusting off his leather jacket. “We need to keep an eye out for that one. He clearly knows Seo Joo Hyun personally. Jaejoong would not be happy to know about this.”

“I’m sorry we are late,” Junhyung said. They started walking back to the coffee house but Jaejoong blocked their path.

“I need you to be more careful with Seohyun,” he begun, crossing his arms. “I forced her to work for the coffee shop so you could keep an eye on her. And I am not pleased that you left her serving the customers alone by herself.”

“We’re sorry,” Hyunseung said as they looked down. “We promise to protect her better the next time.”

Jaejoong nodded in acknowledgment, “You better do so because I am doing a favour to you guys as well.”

“Werewolves?!” D.O.’s eyes widened upon hearing Kris’ story. The older angel just nodded. “How is this even possible? This world is not as safe as I thought it to be.”

“I need to find out more about them.” Kris put his hands together, resting his chin on them.

“I read somewhere before that they are cursed as well.” Suho said, “They are considered land protectors but their population is limited these days. They are looking for a way to break the curse because they want to live ordinary, human lives.”

“What is that something which would break this curse?” Chanyeol asked, as he leaned against the wall the cool white wall.

“I don’t know. It only says that it’s something belonging to the royal Kim family,” Suho said.
