Chapter 18
ForevermoreSeungcheol thinks Jeonghan is different. He’s distant, either staring at nothing in particular or constantly sighing.
Seungcheol can’t sleep knowing that this is happening to him and Jeonghan. Again. So he goes out with the intention of walking around, but he doesn’t expect Jeonghan to be outside as well. He’s staring into the night sky even though there aren’t any stars today. His shoulders rise up and down with each breath, his hair ruffling gently each time the wind blows. He’s...breathtaking.
Then Seungcheol realises something on the phone screen next to him. He squints to read it. Seungcheol doesn’t understand. The screen shows a calendar, marking off dates since 3 months ago. Then, a week from today, there’s a cross on it. Is there something special? It’s not his birthday, nor is it Jeonghan’s birthday, so what could it mean? It seems as if Jeonghan hasn’t noticed him standing there yet, but then again Seungcheol didn’t expect him to. Seungcheol sits himself down next to Jeonghan, staring at the night sky. Only now, Seungcheol realises that there’s a single star shining.
“The star. It’s strong. Even without any other stars in the sky it still shines its brightest.” Jeonghan says, a crooked smile spreading across his face.
He’s envious. Envious that he can’t be like the star. That he’s not strong enough to be alone. He’s scared. Scared of losing, scared of loving, scared of himself. Because he doesn’t know what will happen when his time is up. Because he doesn’t know what will happen when he leaves Seungcheol.
“Like you.” Seungcheol breathes out.
“I wish.” Jeonghan laughs, but there’s no humour in his laughter.
“You are.”
“You don’t-“ Jeonghan cuts himself off, shaking his head. “Never mind.”
“I don’t what?” Jeonghan sighs. Seungcheol probably won’t leave this alone, he knows it. Maybe it’s about time I tell him. After all, he’s going to know sooner or later.
“You don’t know.” He says quietly.
“I don’t know what?” Jeonghan shakes his head, but answers anyways.
“You don’t know that my time is almost up.” He lets out a short breath.
“What?”
“I’m dying, Seungcheol.” Jeonghan whispers, almost too soft to hear. He says it with a straight face, but his words are shaky, and his eyes glisten under the moonlight.
“I-“ Seungcheol is speechless.
“I’m dying.” He repeats, a little louder. “I only have a week left to live.” He blinks, the tears falling.
“H-How long have you known?” Seungcheol is desperate. He can’t let this happen. Not when things were just starting to turn for the better.
“3 months. Does it even make a difference? I’ll die sooner or later. We all will.” Jeonghan smiles. A smile that is void of any warmth or comfort. A smile that is just there for show. A smile that might be the last smile he ever smiles.
Seungcheol opens his mouth but closes it again. He’s angry. Angry at Jeonghan for keeping this so well from him for 3 months. Angry that he can’t do anything about it. Angry at himself for being useless.
“ you and your pretty little lies, Yoon Jeonghan.” He gets up and stalks away without turning back.
Maybe I shouldn’t have told him. But it’s better now, isn’t it? It’s going to be over soon. Just wait.
It’ll be over soon.
