Chapter Eighteen
He Wouldn'tJungkook had already seen the baby once, his first ultrasound hadn’t been that long ago and he was positive nothing much would have changed. The second ultrasound would be much like his first, the technician would point out the white blob on the screen to him, he’d squint and eventually work out which end was the head, he would find it kind of amazing that the blob he was looking at would one day be a real life baby, they’d print him out another picture, he’d go home. And not only did he know what to expect but he would have Jin with him this time too. There was no way his second appointment was going to leave him feeling as shell shocked as his first.
Or at least that’s what he’d thought. It wasn’t quite working out that way. Just like last time he’d tried not to squirm as the gel was applied to his stomach, just like last time he’d taken a deep breath as the technician had pressed down harder than he was sure was necessary. But unlike last time, when he turned to look at the screen he didn’t need anyone to tell him what he was looking at.
“Hyung…” he breathed, turning to look at Jin with wide eyes, “… do you see that?”
“I do.” Jin assured him, looking slightly dazed. “I can’t believe how clear the picture is.”
Jungkook couldn’t either. He wasn’t looking at a kidney bean shaped blob this time, what he was looking at was quite clearly a baby he realised as he turned back to the screen. He could see an arm, a foot, a nose. His baby had a nose now. When had that happened? “It looks like a baby.” he found himself saying, staring in amazement at the image on the screen. How could she be so tiny but look so much like a real person already?
“That’s because it is a baby.” Jin told him and then he was turning to the technician. “Does everything look okay?” He asked.
“I don’t see anything to worry about.” The technician assured him. “As you can see she has the right amount of arms and legs,” she said with a smile pointing them out on the screen.
As the technician pointed out a leg to him Jungkook watched as the baby stretched out then curled back in on itself. His eyes drifted to his abdomen and then back to the screen. He really didn’t look any different. His stomach was still flat, there was no roundness there, no beginnings of a bump, not yet. But his baby, his baby was in there… he or she was moving around. She was tiny, just a couple of inches long he heard the technician say as she showed them the baby’s back bone and told them she was measuring the right size for twelve weeks. She was tiny but she was so clearly a baby, one that could move and kick, stretch out her arms… she was doing that now and if he wasn’t watching her on the screen he’d never know it. It was all so surreal.
“From what I can see everything seems to be as it should be…” the technician was saying now, “…I don’t see any cause for c
