Chapter 2

Black Pearl

~Re-uploaded; Edited~

"What do you mean you don't have any food?" Kris had only just woken up, his stomach aching with hunger, and already he had to sharpen his voice towards one specific, painfully irritating teen.

Jongin laughed nervously, and Kris had to resist the strong urge to punch him in the face. How was he supposed to get through the day without breakfast, and why had Jongin even brought them here if there wasn’t any food? It was seriously getting ridiculous.

The senior heaved an irritated sigh and ran a hand through his messy hair. When he spoke, it was through his teeth. "You could easily steal some, so why not? I’m starving thanks to you."

"Hey, I don't use my ability like that!" Jongin frowned and glared at Kris, who exhaled again.

"Well are you going to let me go get some?" He then asked, resulting in a vigorous head shaking from the other.

"We can't risk you exploding in the streets like you did yesterday."

Kris frowned, though he knew Jongin was right. How else were they supposed to eat, though? Kris couldn’t be seen in public and Jongin still wasn’t fond of leaving him on his own when he could possibly escape. And since stealing was now out of the question, any trip that Jongin could have made would take much longer. Given the popularity of media, on top of that, it would mean no food for at least a week, which was also out of the question.

Kris was about ready to demand a break, when a knock on the front door caught their attention. The couches they’d slept on sat in the first room of the house, and their eyes immediately met at the sound resonating from the wood entrance only a few feet away. Kris had no clue who it could be. He had already asked Jongin if the house was his, and he said it belonged to his distant relatives, though they only used the large house once or twice a year. A visitor was definitely something to be concerned about given that fact, especially after the night they had.

Jongin slowly got up and walked to the large doors, looking into the peep hole with much caution, even though whoever stood on the other side wouldn’t be able to see him. Kris watched curiously as he then opened the door, revealing a slightly shorter male with light brown hair. His big eyes looked past Jongin almost immediately to land on Kris.

"Y-You're real... Right?" The first words the boy spoke had Kris' eyes going wide. And on top of his sudden inquiry, the unknown male ran straight past Jongin to grab onto Kris’ sleeve. There was no escaping for him now, and he stared down at the boy with unshielded astonishment as he went on. "Please tell me! Are there more of us?"

Us? Kris thought, baffled given the context behind the teen's sudden question. Is he like Jongin and I?

"You can tell me." The boy continued, his entire soul put into the pleading words. "I won't tell anyone! I can show you my power, too!"

"So you’re one of us." Jongin mused, strolling back over with a smile. He was surprisingly calm, and it took a minute for Kris to realize that he was, too. On the outside, anyway. "Show us what you got."

A grin spread on the boy's face when Jongin acknowledged him, but then it was replaced with a look of concentration. He lifted his arms out in front of him, his fingers spread wide as he faced the couch Jongin had previously been sitting on. Moments later, the couch lifted off the ground, hovering three feet in the air. The boy lowered the couch back onto the wood floor while Kris just watched in amazement. A grin moved back into the boy's face and Jongin mirrored it, holding out his hand. "I'm Jongin."

Luhan couldn't help but smile as he shook hands with the dark haired male that stood before him. He had found what he was looking for. "My name is Luhan!"

"And you can call me Kris." The taller of the three was smiling softly as he extended his hand out. Luhan shook it lightly, then he quickly gave a small bow to each of them in turn.

"I'm sorry for barging in so suddenly. I honestly didn't think I'd find you here." Kris and Jongin exchanging equally puzzled expressions when Luhan gazed back at them.

"Well you found us, but how'd you know to even look here?" Jongin asked. Luhan didn't really know that answer himself, as much as he wanted to answer, so he gave the only meager explanation that he had available.

"Um... It was in my dream...?"

"A dream?" Kris echoed, and it was then that Luhan realized how weird it sounded. Still, he nodded to confirm and went on.

"I'm not exactly sure, but I had this nagging feeling that I needed to come here." He smiled as he spoke. "After I saw you on TV, I had to find you. I guess it just happened far quicker than I thought it would."

"Why'd you come looking for us, in the first place?" Jongin asked next, seemingly curious.

"You’re just like me." Luhan explained, his initial response soft. "I didn't think anyone else would know how I've ever felt, but now that you're here, I have so many questions."

"Well ask away." Jongin said, motioning to the couches in the large foyer. Luhan gladly took a seat with Jongin across from him, but Kris didn't budge from his spot.

"What about breakfast?" The simple question confused Luhan, but with Jongin’s response, he assumed it was a conversation that they’d already had.

"I told you, I don’t have anything at the moment." Jongin said, sighing. "I'm hungry, too, you know."

"I have something you can eat." Luhan spoke up, then remembering that he’d left his suitcase at the front door. He quickly ran to retrieve his belongings before sitting back down, where he noticed that the two taller males were staring at his suitcase.

"Did you bring everything you own with you?" Kris asked, sarcasm threaded into his words.

Luhan couldn’t suppress a smile as he returned to his seat. "Not everything. I didn't think I'd be going back home for a while, that’s all."

"Well, if you want, you can stay here for a while." Jongin told him. "We'd enjoy the company."

"We?" Kris repeated, his expression one of bewilderment. "How long do you expect me to stay here?"

"At least until you can get that fire of yours under control." Jongin answered honestly, and the following look that crossed Kris’ face was a mix of irritation and relief.

"You’re lucky I live alone, anyways."

Jongin attention returned to Luhan, who was just quietly watching them converse. It was slightly amusing, watching them, but now they were returning to the subject at hand. "About that food you were talking about..."

Luhan’s smile grew, and he threw them each an apple from the meager supply that he’d brought. "It's not much, but it'll last until we get more. I only planned on providing for myself, sorry." Kris quietly accepted the food as he took his original seat on a third couch, and Jongin cleared his throat, gaining Luhan's attention once more.

"You said you had questions to ask?"

Luhan nodded, thinking about what he should ask first. All morning he’d been running over all sorts of subjects, and each one came with a million versions of the same basic questions. So that’s where he decided to begin.

"Do you know if there are more of us?" Jongin and Kris's looked at each other as if for an answer, then they both shook their heads.

"I was surprised enough seeing Kris, and then you showed up."

        "Same here."

Luhan nodded slowly with pursed lips, then he continued. "Do you have any idea why we're... special?" Neither said anything, so Luhan was left with no choice other than to take their silence as a 'no'. He sighed as he leaned back to stare at the ceiling. Two of his big questions already went unanswered. "Are we even human?"

"I've been wondering the same things." Jongin said. "Thinking about who and what I am, and if I should even be alive."

"That last one's pretty depressing." Kris said jokingly, making Luhan smile.

"Well I hope we magically meet someone else soon." He said. "Maybe they'd know something."

As if on cue, there was a succession of short, staccato knocks on the front door. Jongin practically sprinted over to the entrance and opened it after only a split-second glance through the tiny peep hole. A shorter boy with wide eyes stood in the doorway, looking slightly shocked once the door was flung open. "U-Um..."

        "Are you looking for someone?"

The male looked even more shocked at Jongin's question, if it were possibly, and Luhan could barely hear him when he spoke.

"Would you laugh if I said I'm looking for someone with superpowers?" Luhan almost jumped up out of excitement when he heard that, hoping this new boy also had powers of his own. He watched as Jongin pulled the teen into the house, guiding him over to the couches before he opened his mouth again.

"We won't laugh as long as you keep your own lips sealed." Jongin’s words were punctuated with a wink, and it seemed that the boy understood the implication. He gave a small nod as he took a seat, with Jongin sitting at his side.

"So are you special, too?" Luhan asked, eager for his answer. The boy hesitated, then nodded again, causing Luhan to bounce up and down in his seat with uncontained excitement. "Awesome!"

"Calm down, Luhan. You could've at least introduced yourself before asking questions." Kris said, giving Luhan a stern look. Luhan immediately stopped and avoided Kris' gaze by looking at Jongin, who had begun introducing them all to the teenager.

"Pleased to meet you. I'm Kyungsoo." The boy said once their names had been shared. He blinked his large, solemn eyes, and Luhan found himself to be momentarily mesmerized by them.

"So, what are you able to do?" Luhan asked, much calmer than before, but still b with curiosity. "Can you show us?"

Kyungsoo looked uncertain at his question, and he eventually shook his head. "I'd rather not show you. It's a little dangerous..."

"That's perfectly fine. Besides, it may be a little difficult to explain certain injuries to a doctor." Jongin laughed, putting a small smile on Kyungsoo's face despite the hooded feel to his eyes.

"My abilities revolve around strength." Kyungsoo explained. “There’s not much to it other than that, but there’s a few different things I could do if I get creative enough.”

"Wow..." The amazement showed clearly in Luhan's voice, and he couldn't stop a grin from forming on his face. "You must be really tough then."

Kyungsoo shrugged, his smile fading. "More like hazardous..."

The sudden drop in atmosphere had Luhan biting his lip. He hadn’t expected Kyungsoo’s opinion to differ so openly, and Jongin was quick to try and lift the mood.

"Well you haven't done anything as bad as Kris, so don't let that thought bug you!" The taller male glared at Jongin, then he gave in with a sigh.

"That is kind of true..." Luhan laughed alongside Jongin, then a random thought came to him out of nowhere.

"Hey, how old are you guys?"

"I'm seventeen and in my senior year of High school." Kris answered.

"I'm a sophomore, fifteen years old." Kyungsoo said next. .

"I'm also a senior, though I'm eighteen." Luhan told them with a grin, poking his tongue out in a playful manner. He looked expectantly at Jongin, who had yet to say a word on the subject. "Jongin?"

"I'm uh... A freshman... Fourteen..." Luhan couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

"You thought you were older than us, didn't you!?" He held his stomach and tried to muffle his laugh with his hand when a caught expression swept over Jongin’s features. "I'm sorry! Just because your taller doesn't mean you're older." Pink dusted across Jongin's face.

"No I didn't!" He denied stubbornly, as if it wasn’t already made obvious that it was true. "Anyways, are you going to stay here, Kyungsoo?"

        "Stay?"

"Jongin's letting me and Kris stay here with him!" Luhan jumped in happily, completely over his previous laughter in a matter of seconds.

"Kris needs help controlling his power, and Luhan also wants to help find out who we are." Jongin explained. "You can stay, too. We might be safer if we stick together."

"If you don't mind, then I would like to stay."

Luhan grinned, excited at the idea of becoming Kyungsoo's friend. He’d only just met the three teens, but already he felt a connection with them. Jongin seemed to feel the same as he stood, showing a toothy smile.

        "Let the tour begin!"

Luhan sat with his three new friends in front of Jongin’s TV, a box of pizza on his lap. After getting a tour of Jongin's house, which they were told was once a tiny inn, they chose bedrooms. Jongin practically begged Kyungsoo to share a room with him, even though there were a total of six rooms on the top floor, two of which went to Luhan and Kris. The short boy didn’t complain, however, and they continued the day with relaxation. They talked for a long time, had a little fun with their powers, minus Kris and Kyungsoo, then decided on ordering pizza for dinner.

Now they sat in the living room, Jongin and Kris sharing a couch with Luhan on the floor between them, while Kyungsoo sat in a cushioned chair to one side. The TV was on the news channel, but no one bothered changing it as they busied themselves with dinner. It was a good thing, too, otherwise they would've missed something big.

The mood of the whole room dropped drastically as a picture of Kris and Jongin appeared on the TV screen. They were on the news again, but why? The whole thing should’ve been over with in terms of current news, and because of that, each teen gave their utmost attention to the screen before them.

"-and after the incident that occurred yesterday, we have come to relay a message: The people you witnessed are not human. They can and will cause serious damage to our people if they are not turned in. Help protect our people, country, and possibly the world by turning in anyone you may know with such inhuman abilities. Call the following number if you have any knowledge of, or suspicions, about the mutants that have hidden themselves among us-"

Luhan's pizza fell from his hand, landing among the few pieces still in the box. His appetite was completely lost, and now fear was beginning to creep through him. He couldn't turn away from the screen and nausea swarmed in the pit of his stomach. They spoke as though they were wild animals that needed to be hunted down, but worse. They never did anything wrong, as far as Luhan knew. The others were probably just as confused and scared. Now, just showing their faces could be dangerous, and they had no real reason as to why.

Luhan turned to look at the others for some sort of response, but he only noticed the horrified look on Kris' face.

        "It's all my fault..."

Hope you guys enjoyed the second chapter! I meant to post it on Wednesday, but that didn't really work out...

I'll say now that I don't know anything about honorifics, so they won't be used in this fanfic. I'm sorry if that angers any of you.

Thanks for the subscriptions and upvotes after only one chapter! I'm happy to see that people are actually enjoying my fanfic. ^-^
