ArcanumChapter Twenty Nine
~ Closed ~
The border dividing Bufera and Nebbia was as simple as it could get — a stone wall more than a hundred feet up. There were a few Nebbian guards outside the wall, manning the gates that are meters apart from each other. It was all according to the agreement made by the present Kings’ forebears. No people of Lamina should be found on Encian land without permission and vice versa.
Honestly, Kai felt that the whole thing was a bit unfair seeing that the Nebbian guards are technically always on Buferan land, but people aren’t complaining so he kept his opinions to himself. He wasn’t there by the border to criticize the decisions of those who are long dead anyway. He was there to get some news about what’s happening on the other side of the wall… and maybe see if he could finally go back home without a certain general after him. His sisters must be so worried by now.
It wouldn’t be wise to approach the guards, even though they’re the best source of news. He has to find someone else that won’t be suspicious of him. He looked around the area. There was understandably less people near the border, but there has to be someone.
Someone cleared his throat behind him. “Excuse me, but could you please step away from my doorway?”
Kai jumped, then reddened a bit. “Sorry,” he said as he moved himself.
The man stepped out of the house that Kai had subconsciously put himself in front of. “You look lost. Do you need some help?”
He paused for a moment, before deciding that he might as well ask this person. “I was just wondering, are there any news from the other side of the wall?”
“Ah,” the man finished locking up his house and faced him. “We haven’t heard anything these past days. They changed the guards. The new ones are less friendly and more strict. It’s still the same though. Nebbia is in lock down.”
“What?” Kai said in shock.
“Actually, from what I’ve learned, the whole of Encis is closed off from any Laminian.” The man told him. “Is that all you need?”
He nodded. “Thank you,”
The man left, saying something about visiting someone in Volta. Kai just stood there,
