To Live is an Awfully Big Adventure

"What did you buy now?" My Grandfather yelled as we opened the door.

"Me!" My Grandpa looked up from his chair that was in the door’s line of sight and laughed as he got up and hugged me.

"Baby Dain! What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you all and talk." The phone rang and he picked up the phone, listening before glancing at me.

"Yeah, we called her over." I mouthed thank you and my Grandma gave me a look.

I kissed her on the cheek and helped her put the groceries up.

"Honey, you can’t just up and leave home, not telling anyone where you are going."

"Why? Because I'll be messed with since I’m mixed?!" I said and broke down into a crying mess getting so worked up that I fainted.

There were fingers going through my hair and I made a noise as the movement didn’t stop. I felt the person chuckle and I smiled a little and turned my face to the person.

"You gave your grandparents quite a scare." I opened my eyes and tried to jerk away from the train ahjussi but he held me down.

"Please don't hurt me, I'm Korean! I swear! Please don't hurt me!" I said hysterically and crying because how did this guy from the train get in here.

He just wrapped his arms around me.

"No one is going to hurt you, I promise! Calm down Dain." I sniffled and covered my face.

"Are you a stalker? Byuntae??" I asked and he laughed at me.

"You’re very good looking for a byuntae." He looked shocked and blushed.

"What's your name?"

"Bang Yongguk, nice to meet you."

"Is it nice?" I asked and sat up and he released me.

I looked around and realized I was in my grandparents’ spare room. I put my head in my hands and glanced at Yongguk who looked at me and smiled.

"Do you know my grandparents?"

"I do, I usually help your Grandmother with her groceries but you got to her before I did."

"You travel on a train to help my grandmother?" He nodded and I got a better look at him.

"Why?"

"She's helped me out when I was a child and was my neighbor at one point."

"You still help her although you've moved? Wow, you're kind." He smiled, looking down and blushed.

There was a knock and we both looked up and it was my grandparents. I covered my face and they cooed at me.

"Honey you know it's not good to hold things inside." I cringed and looked down.

"I shouldn't have come, I'm sorry." I said standing up as walking passed them.

"Honey, you can't run away from expressing your feelings." I turned and gave them a genuine smile.

"I'm fine, I'll come by again later. I love you." I said and took off from the house and got to the bus station in record time.

I kept my head down while I rode the train upset with myself for feeling the way I did, leaving my grandparents house abruptly and sneaking from home. When I got home I took a shower and tried to sleep off my bad feelings.

The next morning I woke up still feeling gloomy so went running the park that was close to our house to take my mind off of everything. After coming back and getting dressed, Nat called me saying that the crew wanted to practice at the studio. On my way there I kept my head down and only took my hood off when I got into our usual studio. The girls immediately stopped what they were doing once they got a look at my face and crowded around me.

"Why is yo-have you been crying?" I pulled away from her and set up everything.

"I went out for a run right after I woke up."

"Oh!" They all said but I knew my cousin could see right through me.

We were just getting into our rhythm when the group of boys we had come to be cordial with, came in.

"Ladies!" I looked over and immediately moved to the back trying to make myself invisible.

"How are you ladies today?"

"Good!"

"Hello Dain." I flinched but I bowed to them and made it seem like I was busy looking for something.

From the corner of my eye I could see some of the girls look at me weirdly but turned back to the guys. Eventually the guys left after failing to make conversation so we continued to practice dancing. Once we agreed to end it I left as quickly as I could because while dancing made me feel amazing, as soon as we ended our practice I didn’t feel good. I went to the nearby park and began to cry as I couldn’t get used to the blatant way people looked at me and treated me. I didn’t like the feeling of always watching behind my back so I texted my dad and he gave me the directions to his studio. I caught the bus to his studio after I changed into clean, non sweaty clothes. I got into the building after speaking with the security guard and was given directions to my dad’s personal studio room. Upon opening the door it was pretty quiet with a track playing the background.

“Appa.” I said with a small smile hugging him.

"Guys, I'll be back." He grabbed my hand and took me to his office.

"What's going on, Ari?" I tried to smile since he was using my nickname but I couldn't.

"I'm not happy here." I said looking in his eyes.

He seemed genuinely shocked and went to hug me but I cringed because if he hugged me I’d definitely cry and he saw this.

"Mommy doesn't know?" I shook my head and he sighed.

"Okay, I'll call Aunt Cara and have everything set up by Tuesday." My Aunt Cara was my mom’s sister who lived back in the States.

"What are you going to tell mom?"

"Honey, yo-I'll figure something out, okay?" I nodded and he went in his drawer and pulled out some candy and a cute puppy eared headband.

"How about you sit in on my session?"

"Okay." I said and followed him into the studio where a bunch of guys were playing around.

My dad laughed at them and they looked back.

"Guys this is my daughter I hope you don't mind her sitting in." I bowed and they were frozen.

"Yah!" "Hello! Sorry!" I laughed and sat down in a chair and crossed my legs.

"Okay! Here are-" I looked up as stuff fell on the ground.

My eyes looked up at the person who dropped them and it was Bang Yongguk, the byuntae ahjusshi

"Never seen a pretty girl, before?" One of the guys said sneering.

"Not when I have to see your ugly mug all the time." I laughed and failing to stifle my giggles with my hand over my mouth.

My dad shook his head and Yongguk picked up the drinks and said hello. "Yongguk this is my daughter." "Daughter?" "Yeah, Dain." I bowed and played with my phone. The guys went back to work but I felt eyes on me, specifically the byuntae ahjusshi. I glanced at the others and tilted my head.

"Who are you guys?" They stopped talking to each other and looked at me.

"B.A.P"

"B.A.P?"

"Best Absolute Perfect." I looked over at my dad and he laughed.

"That's a lot to live up to."

"We've been handling it so far."

"You should come to our concert next Thursday!"

"She won't be able to make it."

"What! Why?"

"I'm going back home." I said looking at all if them except for Bang.

"Really? Toon hyung are you leaving, too?"

"No, just Dain."

"Why are you going home, Dain-ssi?" I looked at my dad befoe answering.

"I feel uncomfortable here, you know because of-" I said motioning to myself.

"What that you look a bit exotic?"

"Yah!"

"No, that I don't fit in here. Would I look exotic to some people?" I asked seriously.

"To some yes you would but you're beautiful, why would people mess with you and make you uncomfortable?"

"I'm different." "

Are you?" I looked at my dad but he had turned around pointedly not getting into the conversation which frustrated me a little bit.

"I am! South Korea has a warped view of black people and it makes me uncomfortable."

"Were you not born in this country?"

"I was."

"You don't think your own country will accept you."

"No." I said with hesitation.

The guys looked taken aback.

"The view of blacks is bad so why would I be treated any better?"

"HAVE people treated you differently?"

"Not directly but it isn't until a matter if time that they do."

"Sounds like you're waiting for someone to treat you differently so it will justify what you think about your own country." I looked over Bang Yongguk and took in his appearance.

"I'm sure you're one of those types who wished they were born again as a black man, right? You think you'd be accepted as a black man, Bang? Your country wouldn't accept you and neither would America but I'm more adapted to the views of America. So before you try to bemuse why I sit feel comfortable in the stereotypical view if African Americans you need to think before you speak." I said standing up and walking to the door.

"Dad I'll be home packing. This was an interesting meeting B.A.P." I said and leaving and went home.

Two Months Later

I imagine that in the voice from Spongebob LOL

When I came back from the States I felt more of myself. My aunt helped me over depression which I was having from moving to another country so quickly, being uprooted from my life that was so routine). While I was in the States I was able to enroll back in the school I was in and continued with my dance crew. I talked to my parents every couple of days but by the second month I was becoming busy. When my aunt felt like I was ready to go back I was anxious but confident that I would have a better attitude going to Korea.

When I arrived at the airport my parents and grandparents were there to welcome me back although it was very late at night I was grateful that my grandparents came because they were worried about me. My parents had talked to the school I had enrolled in while I was there for the first month and they took care of any discrepancies since I left at such a short notice so that when I was settled back in I would be caught up. I stayed home for a couple of days to sleep of the jetlag before I went out to find my cousin as we had talked to each other almost every day. I forgot how to gt to the dance studio so I asked my mom before I left the house. Iw as suppose to be there before they came from school but ended up 20 minutes late from getting lost! Somehow I walked he opposite way and after I asked a woman on the street I ran to the studio.

"I got lost!" I said taking my hood off revealing my SnapBack that said Commes de Down.

The girls all yelled and ended up jumping on me which made me fall backwards laughing. After our huge dog pile they got off of me and I stood up but tripped and giggled and just splayed out.

"I'm pitiful." I said doing a tumble into standing up said taking the hoodie off and almost falling.

"You're still clumsy as hell." I busted out laughing and taking off my hat o let my hair fall down my back.

"So what's been going on?!?!" I said stretching.

"We've come up with a lot of things."

"Really?" I said putting my things up.

"Yeah! Sit up front and watch." I went to the front of the room and sat against the mirrors as the music began and the girls began dancing.

To say I was in awe woud be in an understatement as they had gotten so much better since I left.  Once they finished I stood up quickly and clapped but fell back on the mirror. The girls laughed at me loudly and I covered my face.

"You're like a little puppy! Full of energy and falling over itself!" I did a cute pose and shook my which had the girls hit at me.

"That was really good though!" I said hip checking my cousin.

We were in the middle of talking when the doors opened fast. We turned and the girls made noises, turning back around.

"Wha-"

"Ladies!!! Nice to see you!!!" The girls rolled their eyes at the guys and I laughed at them.

"Why are y'all being mean?"

"And who do we have here?" I finally faced them all the way and they looked shocked.

"You're back!" I frowned and tilted my head to the side.

"Excuse me? Do I know you?" They looked taken aback and I turned to the girls who were smug.

I looked between them and nodded.

"Okay, well I'm Dain. What's up-I mean hello." I said doing a little wave before I bowed which the girls found hilarious. .

"So who are you?"

"You don't know us?" I frowned as I looked then over trying to recognize their faces before I facd the one in front of met.

"Am I suppose to?"

"I guess not! Rae, these are local boys who come here to practice." My friend said smirking.

"Oh okay! Well hello." I said bowing. The guys were still standing there and looked at the girls.

"This is the company you keep?"

"Yah!" They said as jumped on me and I fell to the ground, squirming trying to get from under them until I crawled away but my leg was grabbed.

"Let me go!" I said twisting my leg and getting up just to be tackled again to the ground.

My arms were pinned above my head and I was tickled. I started begging them to stop and shouting which turned into laughs and then tears from laughing so hard.

"I'm going to pee on myself!!!" I said and they let me up.

I crouched in on myself and caught my breath before I looked back at them and glared.

"You girls play rough." I laughed twisting my hair in a ball and walked over to my phone where it was ringing.

"Hello?"

"Rae!"

"Appa-"

"Uncle!!!!!" I put him on speaker as the girls talked to him and I tied my shoe.

"Rae."

"Yes?"

"Can you come by today?"

"When right now?"

"Yeah, go home to change and they come to my place."

"Okay."

"Love you, baby."

"Love you, too." I said doing as he said.

I got home, showered, and changed into some shorts, a Celtic's jersey, and some Jordan's with a bandana on my head. I caught the bus and got off at my dad's studio. I passed some people and went it the office where the receptionist hugged me.

"Look at you beautiful! Don't leave again!" I laughed and hugged her back.

"I understand!" I said walking to his office.

He wasn't in there so I went into his studio where music was blasting. I walked in and saw guys dancing and my dad at the record table dancing. I walked further in the guys stopped and I tapped my dad's head. He turned and jumped as hugged me.

"What's going on?" I said loudly.

"Ah! I need you to go give something to your Grandpa!"

"What?" I asked cupping my ear.

"Grandpa! Appa's Appa!" I busted out laughing and nodded.

I bobbed my head to the music as I waited for him to give me what my Grandpa needed. The song went off and I messed with my ears to try to clear the noise that I could still hear.

"I thought I was going deaf for a while." The guys laughed and I jumped because I forgot they were there.

"Here you go."

About a month later I was back I the routine of things and felt new comfortable than I ever had in Korea.  I was back in school, I was dancing frequently and sort more time at my dad's studio than ever before. I stopped by one day after school in my uniform to bring him some food. I looked like a normal Korean girl but we had a party in class last period and my face had cute stickers on them. I spoke to the receptionist who completely gushed at how I looked. I knocked on my dad's door and walked in to a bunch of guys watching something. I came in all the way and widened my eyes in horror as it was one if my dance videos with a guy dance group.

"Omo! Daddy!!!!" I yelled stamping my footmaking him laugh and calling me cute.

I looked at the guy in there and pointed at him.

"What's wrong with him?" They just stared at me and I turned to my dad and stopped the video which paused perfectly on one of my faces.

"Dad what are you doing?"

"Isn't your skirt a little short, Rae?"

"By Korea's standards no! You can't show people videos that I'm in it's weird!" I said stamping my foot down.

I heard low words of me being cute and put my head down.

"Did you have something at school?"

"Why?"

"You have all these things on you." He said poking a heart sticker by my eye and I laughed.

"Take your food so I can go."

"I want to introduce you to this group!" I glanced at the group and bowed a bit and said hello.

"This is B.A.P."

"Hello nice to meet you, is he being nice?"

"Yes." They all said and I smiled and nodded.

"Okay, everything is all good!" I turned around and this guy stopped talking and his eyes widened.

"Uh, hello." I said bowing.

"You're back!"

"Excuse me? Do I know you?" His face looked funny and I laughed and tried to cover it up but couldn't.

"You're like the second person to say that to me, do we know each other?"

"Hyung?"

"My daughter is the type out of sight out of mind so if you did meet 2 months ago-"

"Then I don't remember things like that. Sorry, were we friends?"

"No." I nodded and felt awkward.

"Well okay then. See you later at home daddy." I said walking passed the guy.

I looked back at him one last time and left. Later that night the girls took my to norebang to elebrate my return. As we were leaving a man in a suit came up to us and handed me a card. When I got home I went to the cork board in the kitchen and saw the same card so I deicided to call and see what all the fuss was about.

A week later my mom drove me to the YG Entertainment company building so I could tryout! All I wanted to do was dance so if trying out for them would get me some recognition then I was okay with it. When I lead through the building I began to get nervous as there were SO many people there that I felt myself close up. A girl must have saw the array of expressions on my face and came over to comfort me. I usually am more aware of the people around me but I latched onto this girl like a life line. We got in line together after receiving our name tags and we talked all the way until, Suri unnie, the girl who comforted me like a big sister, went to audition. Before long it was my turn and I walked in feeling my nerves rise but they left when the people sitting at a table smiled at me. I bowed and introduced myself and began singing this old trot song my grandparents liked and danced with my all and bowed again before leaving. Suri hugged me as soon as I walked out.

"Unnie I was so nervous!"

"But you did great!"

"You did better, though!" I said hugging her tighter.

"Come on, I'll treat you to ice cream."

"Really? Thank you!" I said hugging her again as I got my cross body bag.

We walked out the building fussing over my nametag and I groaned.

"This is so stupid." I said and tried to help Suri.

"Dain-ah, keep your little grabby fingers out the way!" I cracked up laughing as she got it off of me.

"Are you from Korea?"

"Yes! I was born here and didn't leave until I was almost 8. My family and I lived in America until 3years ago but I spent two months back in the Sates  before coming back a few weeks ago."

"Well I'm glad you came back! I have a cute little donsaeng now!!"

It all came to head a week later when my home got a call from a YG secretary. My mom sent me the text while I was in school so once my school day was over my cousin went with to be dropped off at the YG building. As I entered I was so distracted that I almost walked into a wall. I went to the third floor giving my name to the receptionist and was led into a room with people in it. I thanked her and turned to the full room.

"Dain-ah!" I looked around and saw Suri!

"Unnie-yah!" I said running to her and hugging her tight.

"You will become a trainee!"

"You, too, unnie-yah!" I said hugging her tighter.

She kept me by her side as she introduced me to the other girls she had met and we were talking pretty comfortably when workers came in and gave us a run through and gave us a run down on what was expected of trainees.

And this was my new beginning.  .  .
