Chapter 13

Idols' Conflict

*Bomin’s POV*

“… We or rather I hope that you freshman and transfer students will enjoy your stay and learning in Buchan Private Boarding School…”

I sat there, bored out of my ing mind. Even getting a few winks of sleep during the Principal’s speech. As much as I think how great a guy he is, I couldn’t help but nap in between the speech because I haven’t been sleeping that much. Well… you guys know why.

“On one notice, may the following people see me after Assembly:
Shin Soohyun, Kim Kyungjae, Kim Jaeseop, Lee Kiseop, Woo Sunghyun, Shin Dongho, Lee Junyoung, Kim Minseok, Luhan, Wu Yifan, Kim Joonmyeon, Zhang Yixing, Byun Baekhyun, Park Chanyeol, Do Kyungsoo, Huang Zitao, Kim Jongin, Oh Sehun, Kim Himchan, Bang Yongguk, Kim Daehyun, Moon Jongup, Kim Youngjae, Choi Junhong, Shin Jessica, Yang Bomin and Yang Bowan.”

My head perked up at the sound of my name.

“Whew! That was one long list!” This was where some students who weren’t dozing off awkwardly laughed at the Principal’s attempt at humour. After everybody calmed down, he continued, “Please meet me after Assembly for an urgent matter. Oh, and do me and yourselves a favour; wake each other up. Smack the dozer or punch them. I don’t care, at least it isn’t me.”

I felt a little bit more irked than usual because of how he said everybody’s full name and particularly how he called us only.

Did we do something wrong?

Were we too loud in the dorm?

I ing knew it. I knew sooner or later people would complain about us.

Maybe we shouldn’t have taken that many caffeine shots last night which is also why I couldn’t sleep. You know… Hyperactivity is a huge problem for me. By the way, whose ing idea was it? Bringing energy drinks to school? I mean, come on. Da hell’s wrong with you?

“You are all dismissed now.” At the Principal’s cue, every student apart from us stood up messily and filed through the many doors in the Assembly hall to go to their respective classrooms. Sara, Vicki, Jia, Dayoung and Mihyun gave the Principal long and thoughtful stares before saying ‘bye’ and ‘good luck’ to us while I and a few people tried to wake the other guys up.

“Gee, what did we do last night?” Chanyeol came up to me, scratching his head at the question.

“I don’t know. Too high to remember anything.” Apparently Chanyeol was too.

The thought was definitely worth scratching your head.

He shook his head at my words. “Let’s just wake the others up.” He and his stupid long legs walked to Baekhyun whom I can hear is snoring lightly on Lay’s shoulder.

Seeing how Baekhyun couldn’t wake up with Chanyeol’s violent shoves to the shoulder, I whisper something into his ear and did so for Bowan, Jessica, Kris, Youngjae, Daehyun, Dongho, Luhan, Kevin and Zelo.

“You guys ready?” I asked them, placing my hands over the back of the chairs that were occupied by the sleeping bodies of Suho and Tao.

“Ready.”

If this doesn’t work, I will toss the dead bodies of these people in the mountains…. Or wake them up in a different way.

“Three. Two. One. Go!” I gripped the chairs tightly in my hands and with loads of strength, titled it forward, causing the two to topple onto the ground and waking them up instantly when their faces kissed the ground.

Somehow Suho ended on top of Tao. They both scrambled to get off of each other. A few scratches and punches later, I was telling them to wake the others up.

I looked back at the Principal who is watching us with an amused expression behind us. “Sorry this is taking us a long time, sir.”

He waved my words away. “No, no, no. It’s fine. I can excuse you guys for class.” He walked up the stage where the microphone was waiting for him.

“Hey, Bomin.” I smiled as I heard Jun’s voice behind me and turned to face him.

“Hey. How’s it been, Jun?”

“Bomin.” I beamed once again at my brother who had a stoic expression.

“Do you know what we did last night?” I asked Bowan, lightly nudging him in the ribs. “All I remember is that we had caffeine shots. A lot of them.”

“I actually remember what happened but I don’t want to say it to anybody. The memory is just too horrid.” His voice shook as well as his body. Maybe it is as horrible as it seems so I didn’t press into his mind further to find details but it didn’t mean that I gave up yet.

“Aw, c’mon. I really wanna know.” I wrapped my arms around his waist as I tried to be intimate with my brother.

He shook his head and pushed me off his body. “No.”

“Jun~ Help me.” I clung onto his arm for extra measure; I even pulled out my world champion aegyo voice to convince him.

“Sorry.” He laughed as he tried pulled away but I only clung tighter because of the rage swirling inside me. Jun cringed at the pain on his arm while my brother looked at me amusedly.

He laughed at me.

HE ING LAUGHED AT ME.

HE―

“Sorry to interrupt your conversation but you were all kept back for a reason of course.” The Principal’s voice filtered loudly through the microphone, successfully gaining everyone’s attention.

“Now, some of you may be wondering why I called you and particularly you group of friends. Well, good news for you! You are all put in the same class. That’s why you didn’t receive a timetable during Assembly.”

Kevin raised his hand. “Sir, why are we put in a separate class?”

“Your bosses requested that us for you to be placed in a separate class. Let’s just say that they didn’t want you to mingle with the ‘Sasaengs’.” The Principal even made quotation at the side of his head. “I’m pretty sure there isn’t a soul in this school who even knows you.”

“Thanks.”

Some of us were relieved to hear that we wouldn’t be placed in classes where teachers would expect everybody to get along and become friends with strangers we wouldn’t even want to befriend in the first place. Some people on the other hand were at an outrage at the said statement.

“NO! NO! NO! I DEMAND A CLASS CHANGE!! I DO NOT WANT TO BE STUCK WITH THESE IDIOTS AGAIN!! I’VE PUT UP WITH THEM FOR TWO YEARS!! I DO―” Kris was interrupted by a cloth stuffed in his mouth by le trolling Chen and Tao dragging Kris to a secluded spot in the huge hall while Kris was screaming his head off with unimaginable foul profanities in which a child should not hear or be in the presence of to see the horrid sight of the Dragon trying to publicly execute the Panda.

I shivered while seeing this side of Kris then turned back to look at the Principal who was shaking his head at Kris’ behaviour. “So that means that we’ll be in the same class for the rest of our schooling here?”

“Well, yes, basically, yes.”

“At least we don’t have to worry about who will be in our class next year.” I heard Jessica say to the left of me.

“That’s one huge worry off our shoulders,” Kiseop said.

“Right now I need to take all of you to your classroom, built especially for you. It’s not that far away from your dorms and the main classrooms though.” The Principal started to walk off and seeing nobody making a move, I ran to catch up with him and everybody followed suit.

“Sir, May I ask why you didn’t call my other friends?”

I heard stifled gasps as we left the Assembly Room and walked down a hallway with dimly lit fancy lanterns illuminating the path. There were paintings of odd things on the dark wallpapered walls like some type of fight was occurring between two groups of people and a woman is running away from the fight with a man but her face was covered by a hood. She was holding something like a bundle that was out of sight.

JeongKi, the Principal, leaned in as if telling a secret. “You’ll have to see me in my office if you want to know the answer,” he whispered.

I looked at him with suspicious, keeping that in mind, but seeing that he wasn’t looking at me, I continued my staring at the paintings. Within that brief moment of not focusing on anything, I knew why a few people gasped from before as I let out a sound of surprise myself. Although the air in this hallway seems fresh and clear, there was a heaviness in the atmosphere like some kind of invisible force was pressing against our chests. However, JeongKi, Xiumin and Luhan don’t seem to feel the pressure at all but rather they seemed to be tensed of something else. Maybe they have bad senses. I’ll never know.

As we walked further down the hallway, I noticed more paintings of the same woman but none of them exactly showed her face. It was always covered by a hood or shrouded in darkness. It’s almost like the artist doesn’t want anybody to know who it is or maybe the artist was just too lazy to paint the face. I fully understand you, man. Drawing faces is as hard as pole vaulting around the whole planet with no legs.

I heard somebody groan which was quickly followed by a soft ‘shush’.

“Don’t worry. We’re nearly there,” Principal JeongKi answered the sounds.

We pass by a few more senseless paintings that are good to look at before he led us to a door and stopped in front of it. “Well, here’s your classroom.”

The door swung open to reveal a tall middle aged male with a soft face that would look young if not for the laugh lines around his light brown eyes and the soft wrinkles indented on his skin.

“I see, my class has finally arrived for their first lesson.”

His voice was not what I expected it to be; deep and menacing. Instead his voice was not too high pitched and not too low with gentleness inside it. His voice was somewhere between Eli and Kevin’s voices. Actually he sounds like Luhan but manlier.

“Sorry they’re late, Mr Yun.” JeongKi looked at us and replied, “We had a few difficulties this morning at Assembly.”

Mr Yun smiled brightly and waved his hands in front of him, shaking his head side to side. “It’s alright. We won’t be doing anything of importance.”

“I’ll leave them in your care. Bye, students.” The Principal walked off as we bade him farewell.

“What are you standing there for? Come inside. I have a lesson to teach.” Mr Yun ushered us in the classroom.

He clapped his hands together, gaining our attention. “Why don’t we start off with a greeting? Good morning, class.”

“Good morning, Mr Yun,” we chorused and bowed in such a sloppy way that he got us to repeat it again and again until no one was out of line.

“Now that we got that out of the way, let’s choose your seats!”

“He seems like a really nice teacher and a funny one too,” I told Bowan next to me.

“Yeah. Maybe class will actually be fun for me. Finally my wish has come true.”

“Aww. My little Bo Bo made a little wish and it came true.” I crushed him into my chest as he tried to push me away.

“I told you not to call me that! Now, let go of me!”

Everybody in the room laughed at our display of affection. Jessica laughed so hard that she was basically coughing her innards out.

“You two twins will sit together in the front middle row.” Mr Yun pointed to two seats that were in front of his desk.

Ain’t this ‘fun’ now?

I placed my bag on the table with a sigh. I’ve made up my mind. I’ll see the Principal in his office about my other friends. I’m just curious why they haven’t been put in our class.

Mr Yun pointed to the guys then pointed to their decided chairs. I couldn’t help but notice the extra desk next to the teacher’s table.

If there’s anything worse than arranged seating, it’s the seat next to the teacher.

“Alright! Now that we have our seats, let’s start the lesson with a game,” Mr Yun said as he returned to his seat in front of me.

Looks like this will definitely be the best class ever. Probably in history.

“In this game you have to find somebody who you aren’t familiar with and find out ten things about them that you don’t know.”

Still the best class even with the lame game.

I wanna talk to Jongup. Despite being with him for about a week and a half, I’ve never heard him speak once at least to me.

I grabbed the chair (I think its Lay’s) next to him and crossed my arms on the desk and cheerily said, “Hey, Jongup.”

“Oh, h-hello, Bomin,” he said shyly. None shall say anything except that he is cute when he’s shy.

“I find it funny how that we have seen each other for over a week but haven’t spoken once as friends.”

“Yeah.” Even his nods seem shy. Gosh this guy.

“I’m pretty sure you don’t really know me. So, I’ll just say ten things about myself.” He nods again, showing participation when the teacher walked by us.

“My birthday is on the 10th of September.  I don’t know why but I can speak telepathically with my brother.” Jongup was really shocked when he heard that. I don’t blame him. You’d be counted as weird if you’re not surprised in the least.

“I can speak English, Korean, Chinese and a little bit of Japanese. That’s three,” I said as I counted it off with my fingers. “I have a weird fascination of bringing misery to cats and maybe people. Uhhh… I have a weakness for cute things. My favourite number is seven which is also my lucky number. That would count as, wow my number, seven."

Jongup chuckled at my weak joke. He actually chuckled. From what I’ve seen, that is a major achievement for me.

“Before coming to Korea, I used to make dance covers on YouTube. I am a pro gamer too. And I just made a nickname for you. It’s called Jongoop. From now on you shall be called Jongoop,” I boldly declared. “That’s ten for you.”

“Really? Jongoop? Did you just add poop to my name?” He looked like he was about to pass out when I said yes.

“Do you not like it?”

“Nah, I can live with it.”

“Your turn to say ten things,” I reminded Jongoop.

“Oh! Uh… I suppose you know all my general details, right?” He continued when I nodded, “I am a crazed teddy collector. I like to play RPG horror games. But I’m no pro gamer. Does that count as three?” Jongoop asked me.

I shrugged my limpy shoulders. “I guess so. Do you want to verse each other sometime? Just us two. We can play Mario Karts or something like that. I can make you into a pro gamer.”

“You’re on,” he challenged me as we sort of fist pumped.

“Now, carry on.”

“Ah. Yep.  I also love anime. In some parts of the world I may be counted as an ‘otaku’.”

That had my eyebrows flying.

“Otaku?” I questioned.

“Yeah, otaku. What’s wrong with it?”

“Never mind. Keep going.”

“I have actually read fanfiction before. Don’t worry it was nothing .”

“Did somebody say ?”

“Shut up, Yongguk! You’re not funny and nobody likes you!” I shouted back at him, who was sitting five chairs away from me

Yongguk grabbed his chest with a mocking pained expression. “My heart, oh, how it hurts!”

“Save your act for somebody who cares. And it’s not freaking drama class!” I didn’t bother hearing what he replied back as I turned to face Jongoop. “Sorry for the language there.”

“Nah, I hear a lot worse come out from Yongguk’s mouth back at the dorm.”

“Oh, yeah. I forgot that my brother is staying with you guys. How is he? Is he being a pain? Or not?”

I don’t regularly poke into my brother’s head when he’s with other people. When he respects my privacy, I respect his. By the way, the last time I poked into his mind, I can tell you that it was not all sunshine, unicorns and rainbows.

“He’s actually like… How do I say this so I wouldn’t sound like a pedo? Uh… He’s like our mum and dad even though he is the youngest out of us.”

I wiped a fake tear away. “Oh, my beloved brother has finally got a family although he is still single. I just can’t bear to see him leave me. Look at me. I’ve got nobody. Jongoop, I need somebody to hug me.” I reached my arms out, seeking contact with his body.

Now I should definitely consider that acting career.

“Jongup, you loser! You made Bomin cry!” Kiseop shouted at Jongup when he heard me ‘fake’ crying. My back was facing Kiseop so he doesn’t know that I am acting. Luckily, the room was loud enough so that not everybody heard him but some people saw that I wasn’t balling my eyes out so they chuckled silently then continued whatever they were doing.

“I-I did nothing. I swear.” Jongup tried to push me away to show that I’m not crying ‘exactly’. I’m crying because I was silently laughing too much behind his back while trying to ignore the stares of the other people.

Because I enjoyed Jongoop's suffering a little too much, I sobbed for extra measure.

“I did nothing. I swear,” Kiseop imitated too professionally in a mocking tone. I can just imagine his expression.

“I miss my brother!” I cried out as I clung tighter to Jongoop.

“Seriously, Bomin!? You weren’t crying before and now you decide to cry? Just let go of me.” He shook my shoulders.

“Haha! Jongoop the Loser!” I wiped my legitimate tears away as I let go of him and face Kiseop. “And Kiseop the Caring Boyfriend.” I fluttered my eye lashes at him.

“Hey! I’m no loser! I didn’t even make you cry! You just forcibly hugged me,” Jongoop defended himself.

“Whoa! ’Caring Boyfriend’ is a little too much. We’re not even dating.” Kiseop scooted further away from me.

“I heard dating!”

“Just shut your freaking hole, Yongguk!” I yelled once again at him.

“Okay. For you princess.” He blew a kiss to me and even winked.

That motherer.

I shivered. “Ew. Never come near me, you disgusting bastard.”

“My heart once again explodes into pain.” Yongguk and his dramatic acting really get on my nerves.

This time ‘round I decided to ignore him.

“You’re reaction, though. It was priceless, Jongoop,” I told him.

“J-Just stop it.” He nudged me in the ribs, his face going red from his embarrassment earlier

I tapped my chin, thinking. “I don’t think I can promise that.”

“So, Bomin? You weren’t crying?” Kiseop asked me, placing his elbows on his desk as he looked at me confused.

“Not exactly. I was crying because of my laughing behind Jongoop’s back,” I replied back.

“Jongoop? Seriously?” Kiseop looked at me with that are-you-kidding-me face.

“Yes. My homemade nickname. Trademarked, registered and copyrighted. None shall use it apart from me.”

Jongoop® Jongoop™ Jongoop©

“How about the owner of the name?” Jongoop asked me.

“Yeah, you can use. Bur it’s weird to refer yourself in third person.”

“You have a point.”

In the end Jongoop didn’t need to say ten things because the teacher told us to go off to a very early lunch and don’t come back today. Apparently, the ‘real’ lesson starts tomorrow.

Jessica skipped up to me and linked our arms. “Come on, Bomin, let’s go back to the dorm.”

I shook my head at her. “Sorry, I need to go see the Principal.”

“I can walk you there, though,” she offered.

“Okay.”

Once we reached the office door I glanced at Jessica then at the door. She knew from my look that she can’t come with me inside the office. So she gave me a hug and whispered ‘goodbye’ and I told her to tell the guys that I’m at the Principal’s office before heading off.

This better be fun, I thought before knocking on the hard wood door.
